Unbeaten Big Brown comes through to win Kentucky Derby. Big Brown backed up his trainer's boasts with an explosive finishing kick and won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, a commanding victory turned somber by the fatal breakdown of the filly Eight Belles on horse racing's biggest day.

Fukudome doesn't find racist T-shirts in Wrigleyville funny A Fukudome T-shirt with a racist image is the hottest-selling item at a souvenir stand that sells unlicensed Cubs-related merchandise across Addison Street from the ballpark.......... The Cubs front office was flooded with angry emails from fans in response to a Sun-Times story about a controversial T-shirt being sold outside of Wrigley Field. The ballclub does the right thing (update inside) after the uproar, for those of you who feel we've licked the problem of Racism in America, Guess Again!

Would the same outrage occur if it was an image of a shirtless, hairy, bib-overalled, southern, white guy spitting tobacco juice saying, "Shazam!"?

Afl-Aba
Your visceral reaction and utter disdain for the implication of the question points to one of two things; complete self-loathing of your own race or hatred of another's. In either event, how did you learn to hate so much?

As trite, cliche, and non-responsive as expected.

not all racism is equal,...
Handicapping racism. Novel concept from an equally novel mind.
Sean Avery does his best to reduce the NHL to the level of the WWE (single link to a Youtube video). The NHL responds.

Avery should have gotten two minutes for semaphore. It may have looked ridiculous, but it wasn't a penalty. To be high-sticked, you have to be hit. I'm glad the NHL had the good sense to act on it immediately and maintain the integrity of the game.
Olympic torch put out by protests. Security officials canceled the final run of the Olympic relay through Paris after chaotic protests Monday, sending a snuffed-out torch to its destination on a bus in a humiliating concession to protesters decrying China's human rights record.

It's a slippery slope when one world protestors can intimidate and dictate how the functions of the Olympics are carried out and make it their stage instead of the athletes.
Jose Canseco Has 'Stuff' on A-Rod Throughout this whole somewhat tainted steroids era, Alex Rodriguez's name has never really been slung through the mud. He obviously has a lot of home runs for his age, but he's never hit an exorbitant amount of them in one season. The general perception is A-Rod is just really, really good at what he does.

Jose Conseco is the "Golum" of baseball-Can't play anymore so he tries to steal the "glow" from those who can.
QMJHL mulls sanctions against Roy after brawl The son of legendary NHL goalie Patrick Roy could face discipline from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for his role in an ugly brawl during a first-round playoff game between the Quebec Remparts and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Roy coaches his son Jonathan on the Remparts and denies he encouraged the slugfest near the end of the second period in Saturday night's 10-1 thrashing from the Sagueneens.

The puck doesn't fall far from the stick. You don't need a DNA test to know this is Patrick Roy's kid.
Hockey players east of Edmonton set world record for longest game 2 teams of 20 played for 241 continuous hours, raising $300,000 for pediatric cancer research. The weather was bone chilling at the start of the 10 day marathon, with wind chills making it feel like -35 degrees Celcius.

I'll bet they still had a player who complained he didn't get enough ice time.
Bob Knight Resigns from Texas Tech in midseason after 902 career wins.

The best of times and the worst of times. That was Bob Knight. He could be a ranting, aggressive, pain in the kester. He also had great integrity and instilled discipline in his players. Gus"It's a lovers quarrel"Ganakas at Michigan State was the other end of the coaching spectrum and I'll take Knight over that any day. Bob Knight may have been ramrod tough, but he gave a lot more to the game and his players than he took away.
Colorado wouldn't mind having Peter the Great back. According to ESPN, Forsberg will not play for Modo next season and is training for a Feb. 26 return to the NHL.

Age and injury have taken their toll upon Forsberg the Great and reduced him to Forsberg the Good(ok, maybe very good). That being said, his tenacity on the ice and his leadership in the locker room would elevate everyone's game and make Philadelphia a better team.

One of the best Super Bowls. Too many "stories within a story" to go into but everything played out in grand fashion. Kudos to both teams for fantastic seasons and hats off to Eli for not letting the naysayers get to him. Now all he needs is a supermodel girlfriend.
The Globalization of Sport. David Stern has made efforts to grow the NBA into a global league. The British Empire exported soccer so well that it is often called The World's Game. Simon Kuper contrasts the ways the British and American empires have exported their sports.

Soccer is the "everyman" sport. It's inexpensive, can be played anywhere that has dirt, and you don't have to be a giant or the world's fastest human to excel at it. Even better, after the game you go drink beer. What's not to love?

While I love the tradition of events like the Derby, I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth the cost.
