Yep - I agree. If God is in charge and has a plan, then he seems to have settled for very little.
Most of my problem with evangelicalism is that it purports to be universal, but is so obvioulsy American in it's makeup. The primacy of the individual, the spectacle and focus on wealth and attaining wealth/personal reward, the notions about Israel, etc. It just sounds to me like a bunch of people claiming a world view, but having such a narrow focus to begin with. It's more about culture than any kind of trancendental truth.
And I know that America gets an unfair shake, there are crazy religious everywhere, but at least those morons in Afghanistan and Pakistan have an excuse - they can't bloody read and many live in poverty.

Good thread and eventually a civil discussion. Another victory for SpoFi!
I find it interesting to watch the cultural war in the West fought in these little battles online. I have a couple hardcore Presbyterians in my circle and they have never let me feel less loved despite my heathen status as a non-believer.

Mason is good. (I took Miller.) I am not particularly happy with my team. Lots of question marks in Tavares, Morrow and a few others. I don't like my defense at all and I don't have enough penalty minutes.
About the only thing I like is my goalies. And Crosby (of course).

Simmons likes to suggest that he "knows" the NBA. But, much like baseball and football, he only "knows" about 1/4 of the teams and just glosses over the fact that he has little to no idea about the remaing 75%. 39 wins? Well, I guess that 8 win swing would be the games against the all-powerful Celtics (check with me in January, when KG will be playing with Kedrick Perkins as his 2nd option thanks to P-squared and Ray Ray hiting the trainers table - that team's about as deep as a pie plate).

Them guys just don't watch any of their games outside of last years awful playoff series. My team has two teams - 11 players that can play 20 minutes or more, 2 wicked point guards and 2 scoring big men with a host of role players. No team in the East can shoot better, no team in the East is deeper. I just want to get it in writing - because they're all dead wrong. my beef wasn't with the "early exit" line. what was the purpose of the FPP? if it was about the early exit, fine. so, where are the links for the 3 teams that also exited early? I like it here, I enjoy the people, the humour and the civility - but let's not turn it all into to pablum. This was an innocuous post with a worthy subject and, by most accounts, a lousy link. Crafty's umbrage was misplaced. There is an interesting story here, and a discussion to be had. This was a seminal game of the last decade if the fallout is to be found true - No Torre? No Posada? No Sandman?. Of course, it could be a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing - but we should be able to talk about it. And Crafty you're one of my favorite contributors, too. But this struck me as an overreaction, no doubt fueled by the timing of what I'm sure was a frustrating end to a frustrating series. And yes, Yankee haters are loving it, but you'll find mostly passive Yankee hate here. I'd be impressed if there was any other sports blog out there that would handle this as classy as we do.

Wow, Weedy predicts the Devils will miss the playoffs. Interesting. Only because I HAVE to put the Leafs somewhere. What kind of a fan would I be otherwise? And I don't like the Devils. At some point they're going to crap out because they don't hang on to their skill players. I think Gomez is a huge loss to that team. I also put in the Lightning which I'm not so sure is anything remotely smart. They may not make the playoffs. In fact - I'm changing that: Remove Lightning - insert Thrashers and put Florida in where Atlanta currently is. Lightning have no fucking goaltending worth talking about.

As far as I can tell not giving up a goal is still the best barometer when measuring a team defensively. Also note Raycroft wouldn't have faced so many longer shots if the D was doing its job. Well, it can also be an indicator of a great goalie, too. Raycroft was undoubtedly, for me, the weak link last year. His penchant for late, soft goals and early soft goals is the reason why Toskala is in the blue and white in the first place. Keeping shots outside of 30 feet IS the the D doing it's job. I think you'll see a marked improvement on that front with this team. We just can't score goals.
posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 08:07 AM on September 26
Except we're not measuring GAA. Any goalie that's going to get 50+ starts will be good in our league. So anyone wants to give up Mason, let me know. I'll take him. I think Toskala will be much better in Toronto - firsly because (and I don't know how this happened) the Toronto D has gone from overrated to vastly underrated. Their top four are damn good. Raytrough was the problem (gave up more goals from 30 feet out than anyone else). For the record, I think Blake is just a nice bunch of numbers from last year, but not a legitimate 40 goal scorer. However, Sundin is still a top 10-15 centre in this league - late season goal droughts notwithstanding. I think Blake is good for 30 goals and 50 points, just not early round draft him good, or actually generally good -but he's a fine 2nd winger for our teams.
posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 04:08 PM on September 25
Mostly because Briere's line was facing the best D pairing on a nightly basis - and now that's going to be Afiniganov's (i'm not bothering to look it up) line with Vanek. Also - from what I understand, Vanek has in the past been a bit of a coaster. Now he's has his $50 million and while I don't think it's written in stone, this would be the recipe for a few more mail-it-in games. But I most assuredly could be wrong about it. Maybe he scores 50.
posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 01:50 PM on September 25
There is ample reason to believe that Briere will actually have more ice time than he did last season, and Philly has improved significantly: Timonnen, Hartnell, Lupul and Jason Smith. The reason why I wouldn't bet the farm on him is based soley on the fact that Buffalo had great skating defencemen who could move the puck in a fashion that Philly probably won't be able to. But Gagne is a better player than either winger who played with Briere last year. I think he's a sound 80+ points. Huselius - don't sleep on that guy. His development is one of maturity as far as I can tell. It was never a question of talent. Plus Calgary looks great as a rebound team with plenty of proven skill. Guys I think aren't going to do as well this year: Michael Nylander Jason Blake Brendan Shanahan Mark Recchi Tomas Vanek Sheldon Souray
