Ugh. I'm not a huge hockey fan, so I didn't hear the rumors about him going to Boston until yesterday, but I was really excited to watch him play for the Bruins. I guess it's good that he's going to a good hockey town like Pittsburgh, but it's a shame he had to leave at all.

Still think whoever scheduled Friday's game in Denver ought to be fired, that was a terrible decision. Dick's is a great venue, not complaining about them getting a game, but not in March.
I assumed it was to get the team used to playing at altitude for Azteca.

That was intense. I agree with you about the non-call, but it's shocking Mexico didn't get the benefit of the doubt on that one at home. I was not too worried about the lack of offense. It seemed clear that they were going with a very conservative game plan, largely eschewing counter-attacks to prevent getting caught out by a quick counter-counter-attack, especially with the concerns about the fullbacks going into the match. The US did have some sustained periods of good possession on the Mexican side of the field, especially in the second half.

I can't find the tweet now, but my favorite was one that was bemoaning the state of their busted brackets by noting that "FGCU is actually how most students at Florida Gulf Coast spell Fuck You" or something to that effect.

Huh. I kind of got into Modern Pentathlon at the London Games (#JJGo) so I'm glad to see it's still around, but for me there is not a more Olympic-y sport than wrestling. Maybe the IOC didn't like any of the other sports applying for bids ("baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu") so they figured they dump a sure thing into that pool? I guess I need to stop assuming the decisions of international sports governing bodies are going to make any kind of sense.

It's almost inconceivably tone deaf of them to have even considered making a mock-up of that hat. I thought it might have been a hoax when I first saw it on Uni Watch.

Dick Vitale and the play-by-play guy (Mike Patrick?) were genuinely concerned, first about their own safety as the fans gathered at courtside, and then were horrified when they saw the guy in the wheelchair being pushed onto the court. Good to know someone was looking after him.

Yeah, I feel like the fans have probably achieved their goal at this point by making it a completely unpleasant place to play.

What a fucking weasel move. He knows they would only send him out against a non-contender, so he says he only wants to pitch against a contender. That way it seems like they just couldn't get the schedule to work out, not that he sucks. If he knew they'd only start him against a contender, he'd say "I don't want to ruin anyone's season, so I only want to pitch when it won't affect the pennant race." Weaselly bastard.

That's a good point. If it is all over the highlight shows, I don't really need my own feed. Too bad you can't get the All-22 for one team only.
I'm not sure I would buy it myself since it's only available post game
I would pay well north of $70 for live All-22, especially if I could switch back and forth to the default TV camera angle at will.

You know how sometimes you are a fan of one team, and there is a player on another team who always seems to play well against your team, but you can't help but like him a little bit, and you hope that somehow he might end up on your team, but you know the odds of that are extremely low, given the intricacies of player transactions in major sports. Well, the Patriots are my team, and Junior was that player for me. I know he didn't exactly return to the performances of his prime when he signed with the Pats, but I always got a little extra pleasure when he would make a nice play.
I'm kind of with phaedon here. Wrap up this whole football thing now, or maybe try to play it without pads and with more frequent ejections for dangerous play, or something. This is too much.

It is a shameful practice. The Chargers were doing the same thing to the Patriots. At one point Tom Brady went and stood right over one of the Chargers as their medical staff were "treating" him.
I think we need a combination of Debo270's suggestion along with rcade's. I thought the exact same "If you cannot make it off the field in time for the next snap, you are out until the next possession change" rule, and I would expand rcade's idea to allow officials to call an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty on a player they know to be flopping. Obviously, you would only want to call that in extreme circumstances, but it would be good to give them that option.

So here is my hand-made attempt at reorganizing the NCAA into 4 super-conferences with no independents and 5 lesser conferences. I guess you don't really need a fifth super, but it's a shame to relegate teams like Boise St, TCU, Missouri and Louisville to the also-rans.
posted by Rock Steady at 12:38 PM on September 19
I was poking around a bit last night for something like an NBA Trade Machine for NCAA realignment but I couldn't find anything. It would be nice to have a little interactive listing of all the teams and the conferences that you could drag around and create your own version of the FBS. Ideally it would even rate your moves as something like "Likely", "Unlikely" and "Impossible" based on current rumors and agreements.
I say this because I feel like it should be more like five 16-team superconferences. If you limit it to just 64 teams, there are some worthy programs that get left out. I guess that makes any presumed playoff scenario unwieldy, but it seems more reasonable to me (I realize that reason has no place in college athletics).

Yeah, it was fun to have him on the Celtics. Sorry to see him go.
You should check out Shaq's reality show, Shaq Vs., in which he competes with superstars in various (mostly athletic) disciplines to see if, with a little training and a decent handicap, he can compete with them. Apparently he stole the idea from Steve Nash, but it's still great TV. Best to watch it DVR'ed, as there is about 15 minutes of actual content in each 30 minute show.

That's a travesty. Honestly, though, he'll catch on somewhere, and whatever sport it is will be the better for it. I do think there was a natural affinity between Gus's incredible energy levels and the high-stakes, one-and-done nature of the NCAAs, but it's not like other sports don't have their own drama. He'd be great at calling an overtime hockey playoff game, for example.

the chances of this being a serious answer to an open-ended question are very slim
Do you think he is lying? That this is a joke answer? They are not making stuff up throughout the interview. They are telling funny stories (They are a very funny family, I must admit. Peyton\'s SNL appearance was head and shoulders above Brady\'s), but not, it seems, creating stuff out of whole cloth (aside from the obvious punchline about their Mom in the CFL). Frankly, the fact that this comes to mind when Peyton is sitting around shooting the shit seems somehow worse than if it were part of a serious interview.

Stay classy, Peyton. Setting another great example for the kids. I'm also a Pats fan, but it's so fascinating to me to watch the differences between Manning and Brady. Both are insanely competitive and successful, but Peyton does it by being a whiny control freak and Brady does it by being an almost robotic, ice-in-his-veins professional. I know which one I'd prefer to watch, even if I wasn't already biased.

Interesting. It's been said for years that the only reason the US does not compete internationally in soccer is that our best athletes are driven to other sports for financial reasons. If Ochocinco can make it in MLS after not playing the game for years it might lend credibility to that theory. Also, "Ochocinco" would make a great mononym, like Pele and Kaka.
