Why put it like this?

Heh heh. Actually, it's the latest twist in cross-marketing. Hollywood's merely seeding awareness for Terminator 3: Rosy, the She Bot.

God forbid we should ever combine sex appeal and sports.

Brazil v Turkey.

Ah well. Bra(s/z)il and Germany it is then. Just like I've been telling all my offline friends. :)

Brazil v Turkey.

Here we go Turkey, here we go... Come on, Turkey, g-dammit! By the way, is the two-clap chant fairly common, or is the original Axis regrouping, as in: "Nip-pon! (clap-clap) Nip-pon! (clap-clap) ..." ..and observed during the Germany-Korea match: "Deutsch-land! (clap-clap) Deutsch-land! (clap-clap) ..." All of which reminds me of that old private joke between Japanese and German businessmen: "Next time let's do without Italy."

Brazil v Turkey.

ok, updating my hobbled prediction: 1. Turkey 2. Germany 3. Korea 4. Brazil (still not betting)

Germany v Korea is semifinal 1.

hey, anything goes ..and has, right?: 1. Turkey 2. Korea 3. Germany 4. Brazil (with the standard but-I-won't-be-betting-on-it disclaimer)

Business as usual.

Eh. I guess every new upstart has to run the gauntlet of Doubters. Even if they win magnificently, some people will still claim it was a fluke. Hell, some people are still dissin' the Lakers. Yeah, whatev.

Spain robbed by linesman

Speaking of that kind of boning, what about the Univision Lara Croft-ish-slash-techno babe who introduces the games? Hummana hummana. Univision's presentacion rocks.

Are the next Korean Presidential elections and the FIFA refs favoritism of Korea linked?

And yeah, (referring back a few posts) ..Collina.. that ref is cool to watch. In a flattering way, he would translate well into a videogame or movie character. He's just so lovably expressive. Back to Hiddink.. I think his cautious-expectations approach has been right on.

Spain robbed by linesman

Guus--heh, that does feel awkward to type--Hiddink.. looks like a class act. I heard him speaking fluent Spanish to a Univision reporter, so that makes him, far as I know, trilingual (on top of Dutch & English), and is most certainly boning up on some passable Korean while on the current job. Now he's the first coach to take two different national teams to the semis.

At this point I say nuts to the conspiricists. My admiration grows for France, et al, with each new wave of spoilsport whining.

Turkey dominates

I know what you mean, Kattullus. The 4 finals possibilities: Turkey - Germany Turkey - Korea Brazil - Germany Brazil - Korea ..seem an order of magnitude less interesting with Senegal out. Eh, so much for the underrepresented-demographics conspiracy.

Spain robbed by linesman

Looked like the guy purposefully stumbled before making a very weak shot. Heh, the thought crossed my mind too, but the logistics of buying the guy off would seem to entail all sorts of contingency planning and secrecy... nah. I've seen players try that stutter-step fakeout before.

Spain robbed by linesman

I don't remember which particular off-sides call that was, but weren't they all--the 3 or so--whistled & flagged well before the (attempted) goal? But yeah, gotta hand it to Spain for their energetic hustling and attacking. Tough break with the penalty shot.

Perugia Backpedals Over Ahn.

Sounds more like damage control, after reading this LA Times article yesterday (login: "cpunks", password: "cpunks"). Here are the salient parts: "I am not extending his contract, he does not merit it," Gaucci said. "When he arrived he was like a little lost goat who didn't even have the money to buy a sandwich. He became rich without doing anything exceptional and then, at the World Cup, he denigrated Italian football. "I would have to pay three billion lire [$1.53 million] to extend his contract. But I won't. Ahn will never play for Perugia again. "What do you think I would do? That I would keep a player who ruined Italian football? He should have shown his talents when he was with us. He'll just have to go back to Korea and earn 100,000 lire [about $48] a month." Them grapes are so sour they're making Gaucci's bunghole pucker.

USA v Germany by the numbers.

Ok, I'll dupe myself into believing the U.S. will win, though the Germans worry me by their extreme modesty in anticipation of this match. 3:2, USA, what the heck. (Besides, The Conspiracy Theory favors the U.S. for its unmined demographic.) :> ..that'll be the last of it, sorry!

Will England v Brazil be repeat of 1970 first round tie?

Hmm.. hard to guess the outcome, but the Italian-conspiracy-theory has me asking which team would generate the better ratings & maximum future returns for FIFA. Go England!

Italian soccer club Perugia fires South Korea's Ahn Jung-hwan for knocking out Italy.

This behavior reminds me of an ex-friend who couldn't stand not being the center of attention. I found it amusingly ironic to hear some of their complaints steeped with terms such as "hit men" and "sitting around a table".

Japan v Turkey

I was rooting for Japan, but Turkey definitely was the better team in this showing. Their ball control was excellent. Maybe the rain hampered Japan.. they sure looked lackluster compared to their earlier games.
