I only know him from the stupid talking heads show on ESPN that comes on before PTI. I didn't like him. So, now I find out he's not just obnoxious, he's also a scumbag. Well, he'll do just fine on TV, then.

you know, knowsalittle, i think your comparison - besides being absolutely, from-another-planet absurd - fails on a pretty fundamental level. That being, in _flubber_, they are essentially using a technological innovation to improve the performance of equipment. This isn't cheating, this is just sport: golf, tennis, football, hockey, marathoning and on and on - the entire landscape of the competition is constantly changed by improvements to gear. This is something fundamentally different from using controlled substances to change body musculature, hand-eye coordination, etc.

Don't even get knowsalittle started about Angels in the Outfield. The amount of cheating in that is fucking detestable, and supposedly sanctioned by GOD HIMSELF. It's disgusting, that's what it is.

Well, wfrazerjr, I've been waiting awhile. I figured it was about time. I read this in the paper Smithsonian and have been waiting a month to post it.

Yeah, I think a lot of the reason is simply that the dollar was so strong compared to the C$ that it made economic sense. Especially as an attempt to turn the sport from essentially US Regional to US national. If the currency trend continues, we might see a shift of hockey teams back where they belong.

MonkeyHawk: You're not joking that you don't have a clue about Nashville, especially if you think that there is nothing to do there or that there's simply nothing there for him to do. Amy Grant concert? Lame.

Yeah, how you can call it *boring* is beyond me. I mean, though, you did say you didn't care about either of the teams, so that might be why. Yes. Freethrows. That was the UMem bugbear all season and ,even though it ran off to the shadows during the dance, it came back to strike when I expected it to. (I'm sorry to say) I think, honestly, the gamechanger was Dorsey's fouling out with 2 mins left, and his absence was especially felt in overtime. A fantastic game, but it didn't keep me from being sad all day. Kansas will be there and get it again. Memphis? I might not live to see it.

YYM: As everyone has been saying, our [Memphis] fatal flaw is at the line. I think only 2 other schools in all of DI had a worse percentage. But, if we keep shooting like we did last night, not a team in the world can beat us. I mean, 80% is clearly too much to expect, of course, but even 70 or 65 would make the Tigers awfully hard to beat.

I remember Showboats BBQ, in team colors, natch. Ah, what could have been, indeed! There isn't a hopeless football grail this city won't chase. It is interesting to think of the NFL being in such a weakened position that a rival league could poach first round talent. My memory of those times is not that good.

So hooray for mandatory conscription then? Hell to that. Post four and still no talk of sports.

My favorite part of this is Gonzalez reply to the reporter. "Hey, I'm coachable." Classic all around.

I thought that sportsman of the year rewarded sportsmanship. He's an acceptable choice if that is the case, I think.

hellapuckboy: I offer you an invitation to become educated on the topic of anti-trust exemptions in professional sport. Perhaps what you learn will inspire you in the future to do your own research on topics of interest and come to informed conclusions, rather than foaming at the mouth over something you clearly have little understanding of and making yourself look foolish.

This is most excellent! Speaking as a Vol Alumnus, and one who used to teach classess as a graduate assistant, I can personally attest to the class with which her players conduct themselves. My female athletes (even BBall players) were among my best perfoming and most professional students, respectful and classy.

I think Florida probbly has a lot more people who hail from out of state living there than Ohio, which is my guess as to why the percentages are different

Here's the funny (sad) thing about how things work in the US. Tillman gets killed, and the offical story turns out to be essentially fabricated, and some people suggest that maybe we should look into it. It gets looked into, but - because the wheels of justice are slow - it takes a long time. So, once the truth is finally out, those who totally exploited this guys death can say "why are we still talking about this? It was years ago."

Huizenga is in the top? I always thought he was the sort to dismantal his teams the instant there was a dollar to be made at it. Hardly stellar ownership.

I don't really think it's devaluing anything since is only going on in a really small place instead of being declared by the government. Also, non-governmental bodies don't have to fly their flags according to code. (Few do, going by the letters)

Oops. Sorry:
Very sad, but I think it was time to go. I agree with the (appropriately) orange text. I'll be interested to see where we go from here.
