Broken Faces : During 2006, photographer Denis Rouvre travelled throughout France to document Top 14 French rugby matches. Granted open access to the locker rooms, he captured portraits of 220 players immediately after they left the pitch. "Bruise, grimy, bandaged, these smiling or grimacing faces reveal the impacts, the high stakes, the solidarity." (Note: Lots of Flash. Click Work ? Broken Faces.)

If I could favourite things on SpoFi, I'd favourite the hell out of that. Thanks, afx.

Great post. There's way too little serious art devoted to sports (Maria Sharapova in S.I. aside).

So much untapped potential there, all of them on display in this collection. Epic battles, racial tensions, everyday people with apparently god-like abilities, mythology, idolatry...all capture the imaginations of sports fans. Why shouldn't art have more to say about this? By the way, anyone found the reportedly amazing Zidane film in a theatre near you?

Pretty cool. Almost gladiator-esque in nature. Reminds me of why I would rather watch Rugby than play it - the old body probably couldn't take the abuse!
