"Is Barry Sanders an Asshole or Just a Typical Kansan? : Now I know there are oodles and oodles of Barry Sanders fans, even some who remain in the Detroit area, who would like to smack me upside the head and dunk me in a big smelly vat of yak piss for impugning the saintly reputation of their hero." Barry Sanders is a man who made enough money to survive for the rest of his life and took an early retirement. as much as I would still like to see him in the NFL today, he's not and I see no reason to dislike him.

How about him not repaying the rest of that contract advance? By all means retire when you like Barry, but that strikes me as dishonourable.

"Elmo Spudd" strikes me as the typical bitch-ass who calls in on sports talk radio shows -- in Kansas, Michigan or anywhere else. The mindset is that an athlete, particularly a black athlete, owes it to the public to "perform". The sad part is that some of this stuff on the website is true. Sanders could be phony. He bones a lot. It's possible that the Wichita columnist could be a toady. Sanders probably needs to give back the money. All of it is irrelevant. This guy wouldn't write any of this if Barry Sanders was still playing for the Lions, which kills his credibility. Sanders is retired. He really doesn't owe anyone anything. He may not be a saint, but deal with it and move on.

That is a WORLD-CLASS rant. And that's the only credit I'll give the guy. During its Sunday NFL coverage, CBS aired excerpts of an interview Barry did with Marcus Allen. When asked if he'd ever return to football, Barry said, "No." Gee, that's a shame. As if anyone really gives a shit at this point, anyway. I can think of at least one person who apparently gives a whole lotta shit about Barry. All you have to do is read about retired NFL guys with chronic knee, foot, back, neck, elbow, shoulder, etc. etc. etc. problems and you know Barry is very comfortable with his decision. To take a guy to task for not sticking around long enough to break records seems pretty lame to me.
