One idiot replaces another: Step aside folks, because Matt Millen has taken Charlie Casserly's place on the NFL Competition Committee. God help us all

It could of been worst. Say Bill Parcell

It could of been worst. Say Bill Parcell Easy there, buddy. Parcells has actually managed champions in his career. Millen has managed, with the help of exasperatingly inept ownership, the complete fucking of a history-rich football club. Parcells will likely add another playoff season to his resume this year, while Millen will add another chapter of misery to the long, sad book that is the life of Lions fans everywhere.

It could have been worst. I daresay it is.

Not to sound completely ill-informed; but, what does the NFL's competition committee ~do~? It is not the rules committee, exactly, but then it is. They make decisions that affect the day-to-day operations and game day decisions, but what does that really mean? Aside from telling Chad Johnson not to dance and Reggie Bush to choose a number other than 5 what do they do? Besides, Millen is one of 8 members, heck I wish the Lions had 7 other voices of reason to drown him out....

When the Pats were winning Superbowls, the CC spent a bit of time trying to stop that.

Fire Millen, indeed.

I will never understand how people can be this stupid and still amass great sums of cash. Millen has demonstrated an abysmal lack of understanding of the business side of the game. He can't even scrape together any good ideas for his own team, so why ask for his opinions on the overall league?

How dare you insult all of the idiots of the world by comparing them to Millien! Sure they're stupid and maybe even crazy, but even idiots deserve more respect then to be put in the same category as that man! Shame on you!

Easy there, buddy. Parcells has actually managed champions in his career. Millen has managed, with the help of exasperatingly inept ownership, the complete fucking of a history-rich football club. That's true TBH. The Lions have been the doormat of the NFL for so long that many people don't remember (or even realize) that in the 1950's they were a team that was feared throughout the league. Hard to believe considering the management (or lack of) they have now. Hope the glory years come back while I'm still above ground, but they don't appear to be headed that way.

I kind of find myself hoping that the Lions will do bad again and again until Millen is fired. Then again, the Fords don't deserve a championship either. Millen takes a lot of heat (which he very much deserves) but the Fords are just as bad. Hell, those idiots gave Millen a contract extension.

YYM, like I asked before, how can people that stupid get (or stay) that rich? I know that football is only a tiny part of the empires of most of the owners (like the Fords), and that even bad football teams generally make a profit, but when the man on the street can see some of their biggest screw ups coming a mile away, you have to wonder how most of them keep from going Enron.

God Bless America! Where results are not appropriately awarded. Actually, this could be a good thing. I've always heard of incompetence being rewarded, maybe this is the Lion's way of booting Millen "upstairs". Sigh, my fantasy is just that as long as Ford, (could be replaced with another 4 letter word starting with F), is the owner. Marc hin g D o w n eh, forget it. (kind of appropriate that the Lion's fight song talks about going down).

Charley is a fool. No wonder why his name is spelled THAT way, as in Charley Horse. He gace up Reggie and VY. However, Millen is a bigger fool, the biggest yet in pro sports. I thinkg there is one answer to the Millen problem (I have friends in DET): Outsource Millen to India. And Charley: well, we'll send him to Canada so he can smoke with Ricky Williams.

ctal, you asked 'how can people that stupid get (or stay) that rich'... I'm reminded of Kevin Smith (of Silent Bob fame) talking about John Peters, who went from being Barbara Streisand's hairdresser, to producing her boxing movie 'The Main Event', to being the Executive Producer of the movie Wild Wild West.. because, as Kevin Smith says, "In Hollywood, you just kind of fail upwards"... Perhaps the same principle applies to Millen?

Forward down the field, A charging team that will not yield. And when the Blue and Silver wave, Stand and cheer the brave. Rah! Rah! Rah! Go hard, win the game. With honor you will keep your fame. Down the field and gain, A Lion victory! Quote from detroitlions.com- Still one of the oldest team fight songs in the NFL, Gridiron Heroes is still played after every Lions score. Thus the reason most Lions fans didn't even know there was a fight song.

How so? Just curious. Mainly by emphasising the rules in the book that the Pats liked to bend, specifically the ones around pass defense. The year after one of the Indy playoff games where the Pats mugged the WRs and TEs all game, Bill Polian, as part of the CC, had the league emphasize that point. Just seems weird that interested parties have a seat on the committee.

posted by yerfatma at 04:58 PM on August 05, 2006

Helluva point there, yerfatma, though, I doubt that was the first or only time that someone's place on the committee was used to advantage...and Polian was, and is, grasping at whatever he can, to get over the hump.

Didn't the CC also tweak the "tuck rule" after that Raiders-Pats playoff game in the snow in Foxboro?

posted by The_Black_Hand at 11:57 AM on August 06, 2006

TBH, you just had to bring that up, lol, that call STILL steams me! (getting riled even as I type). One more reason why I hate the Patriots! go steelers!

posted by steelergirl at 01:47 PM on August 06, 2006

Gee, the Competition Committe looks to see if last year's champion got there by gaming the system?? Absurd. They should not be out there looking for rules that are loosley enforced, or poorly defined, that's just plain ludicrous!
