The fact that the first two games are only on Versus breaks my heart....and compels me to go to a sports bar that gets Versus.

Excellent linkage NoMich. I'm lucky enough that not only do I have Comcast so I can watch it on Versus but we're close enough to Canada that I can watch the game on CBC if I want to. Sometimes it is nice to shift announcing perspectives from time to time.

Great game for the first two periods. Anyone else see the incredible time-lapse Stanley Cup commercial by the NHL?

Yeah, great promo.

Was an interesting game how during those 4 power plays, the pens had some really good scoring chances but couldn't collect on anything. After that, the Detroit D really clamped down allowing few scoring chances. Didn't hurt that the pens O as a whole seemed to disapeer. Still, most of those goals were on bad team plays by the pens (bad clearing into the detroit zone giving Samuelson that raparound Fleury should have got anyways, the SH goal).

I went to the Pistons game. That was a bad choice...

How questionable was the goal that they called back?

posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 09:26 AM on May 25, 2008

Holmstrom is going to get some tough calls by virtue of the fact that he tests the limits all the time. In this case, his stick was between the goalie's legs at the time the shot went past, which looked like interference. Fleury might have been out of the crease at the time, but it was a bang-bang play and I can see why the refs waved off the goal.

WOW! Who is the guy in the white jacket with the huge flowers? It is cool to see someone who is secure in their masculinity. I just hope this is a hard fought series and neither team sweeps. Too bad they couldn't show that commercial in slo mo so you could recognize all who hoisted the cup. Loved the link about octopus tradition. Bunch of great links there, NoMich

Yea, the Holmstrom call was close. I'm a Red Wings homer and was pissed at the time, but I understand why the goal was disallowed. Plus, for a guy like him, it's not always about scoring the goal but getting the goalie thinking too much. For instance, Fleury's bad stick handling causing the turnover and Samuelson's second goal.

The paper wrote that while it could justifiably be considered interference, Holmstrom's actions didn't actually impair Fleury. I didn't see the goal so I can't pass judgement on it. There was an outcry over a goal that was called back in game four against Dallas, a goal that should have counted. It is a widespread belief in Detroit now that Holmstrom is a marked man by the league.

WOW! Who is the guy in the white jacket with the huge flowers? It is cool to see someone who is secure in their masculinity. Don Cherry. People either love him or hate him. Don was recently voted the 7th greatest Canadian (on a CBC poll), behind people like Tommy Douglas, Terry Fox, Sir Frederick Banting, David Suzuki, and Lester Bowles (Mike) Pearson. He finished just ahead of Sir John A. Macdonald, Alexander Graham Bell, and Wayne Gretzky. Some of the things Don is known for include his passionate patriotism, his appreciation of physical hockey, as a bit of a redneck, and for his strong support of the Canadian Armed Forces and firefighters and police officers.

Plus, for a guy like him, it's not always about scoring the goal but getting the goalie thinking too much. Mission accomplished. If Fleury doesn't get Holmstrom out of his head this will be a short series.
