Ex-heavyweight Berbick Dead.: Some news reports say he was slashed to death with either hatchet or a machete.

MSNBC is reporting he was found with "chop wounds" in his head.

Holy shit. I'd heard about the rape charges, but I didn't realize how far south his life had gone. Holy shit.

I don't know who was mad at him or for what, but you got to be some kind of pissed to take a hatchet to someones head. Terrible way to go.

Damn, you've gotta really piss someone off to get attacked with a freaking machete. Bummer.

Sad deal all the way around. Though I was confused by the statement in the article "- Former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick was found dead in a church courtyard Saturday with chop wounds to his head in a suspected homicide" Suspected homicide??? I think multiple chop wounds to head pretty much confirms that.

dviking, it's the Caribbean, they don't want to jump to conclusions. Or they watch too much CSI

I love the report of the spokesman who said that "he was a really tremendous guy, except for a few bumps in his life".Isn't that like saying that Jack the Ripper "was a really friendly chap, except for all those prostitutes that he carved up and all"?

Isn't that like saying that Jack the Ripper Greg Maddux "was a really friendly chap, except for all those prostitutes that he carved up and all"? Fixed.

There is no Greg Maddux stuff. It's just a stupid spo-fi running joke.

There is no Greg Maddux stuff. It's just a stupid spo-fi running joke. Oh, Maddux is SO going to exact his terrible revenge upon you for calling it "stupid".

Thanks. I feel stupid, but better.

No problem, louisville, it's just a sophomoric running gag that has been beaten into the ground by some 'oh so clever' spo-fi'ers.

it's just a sophomoric running gag How old is sophmoric because I've been here a while and I have no idea what's going on when it comes to Greg Maddux.

How old is sophmoric because I've been here a while and I have no idea what's going on when it comes to Greg Maddux. I was in the same boat as you two a while ago, just not getting it at all. I asked about this whole Maddux thing in I think August, and as I best recall, but I'm not 100% sure, it was Weedy who filled me in on the info that it's an ongoing joke. It's my opinion that it has been beaten into the ground.

I heard on a morning radio show that Berbick reportedly lost his life over some land deal gone bad. Supposedly, he was in a bar, something was said, they took it outside and Berbick did not fare well. I remember watching the fight where he beat Ali. I hope the murderer is found.

Guess he made the mistake of bringing his fists to a knife fight. Or in this case a machete fight.

Horrible way to go. The Greg Maddux thing is awesome, though. It's an in-joke that keeps me snickering. It all started....

Machete's are the weapon of choice in the Caribbean, sort of like switchblades in the 50s or a 9 these days.

posted by sfts2 at 03:07 PM on October 30, 2006

Funny but I still have the switchblade I used to carry to school in the late 60's early 70's for protection. It's in a box in storage somewhere, but I'm sure it there somewhere.

That was quite a discussion weedy. I now fully believe in the powers of Greg Maddux.

That thread never, ever fails to make me laugh.

Is this really possible?

I'm with chico and Weedy on the Maddux Files. It's just a stupid spo-fi running joke. it's just a sophomoric running gag that has been beaten into the ground by some 'oh so clever' spo-fi'ers. Love you too, big guy. And I believe the correct term is "SpoFites."

Love you too, big guy. And I believe the correct term is "SpoFites." Right back at you, slugger. And, thanks, always glad to learn something, 'SpoFites' it is then.

Spofi-gander?

posted by commander cody at 09:57 PM on October 31, 2006

I'm not a big fan of Michigander. Of course Spofiganian might work.

posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 05:10 AM on November 01, 2006

I never much cared for it myself Ying Yang, but in my younger days I had a patch on my backpack in college with a Gander (male Goose to the un-informed) on it and the words "I'm a MichiGander". I always thought Michiganian worked better.

posted by commander cody at 09:59 AM on November 01, 2006

Yeah, being compared to a goose doesn't work for me.

Has anybody heard anything more on this story yet?

Better to be a goose then to get a goose I guess.

Has anybody heard anything more on this story yet? Today (Friday) the police arrested his nephew and another man for the murder. Still not much more in details other then that yet though.
