Ice Dancing Results: Spoiler inside.........

I have been watching this competition and have been thoroughly enjoying this. I am really pleased that the USA did so well. I didn't know anything about it until skydivedad schooled me on it. I used to think that it wasn't a sport because it is all in the judges opinion of good but now with the new system I am enjoying it. I am really glad that Tanith Belbin and partner Ben Agosto did so well for the USA. It is no surprise that the Russians took gold because they truely rock at this sport. Sunday night there were alot of falls and they said it was because too many teams were pushing the envelope trying to get more technical points. It really makes for some exciting competition.

I think that the ice dancing has been the best skating (figure)event so far. Sunday night was amazing with all the falls. It was getting to the point that if you could remain upright you got extra points. Didn't you love "the stare" from the Italian chick at the conclusion of their routine (they were one of the pairs that fell)? If looks could kill!! I bet he got an earful later!!

Oh yeah she was definately mad at him. The Canadian couple that fell last night ended up withdrawing today.

Shoulda stuck with your first instinct, sdm ;) It is okay to love a competition, even if it isn't a sport.

Hey, if curling is a "sport", than ice dancing or figure skating is a sport!

Was the Canadian's the pair where the woman took that hard fall? Was she the one whose hands slipped off his arm and dropped hard on the ice? I was impressed she finished. Even the hubby felt her pain.

lil'red The Canadian Ice Dancing Pair were almost finished with their original program skate when the fall occurred, they left the ice immediately, however they had complete 99% of their program and were given a score putting them in 6th place. She landed very hard on her right hip and was taken to a hospital. xray were negative for a broken bones but she was unable to continue for tonites freeskate program. You might be thinking of the Chinese Pair in Figure Skating (not Ice Dancing) who took the Silver. She hurt her knee on a throw jump (no throws allowed in Ice Dance) was allowed a time-out then they completed their long program well enough to take the Silver Medal even with the deduction for the fall. Hope that helps....

Re: the Italian couple: Wow. I think we just witnessed ice dancing's version of make-up sex.

Are you all watching the competition right now? Divas are alive and well in ice dancing!! The Italian pair with "the Glare" were ignoring each other, arrived at the rink separately and warmed up separately. What a program tonight!! It's too bad about the fall yesterday. Makes you wonder if they could have medaled. Skydivedad, I was thinking of the Canadians. I don't think I was describing her fall correctly in my comment. She was a trouper. I was sorry that they had to drop out. Too bad it's not a "sport," they sure take falls as if it were. I hope you get the sarcasm. It's a sport!!

I really don't mind ice dancing but it seems to have dominated te coverage. Acrobatic ski jumping was given 5 minutes tonight while we had predominately ice dancing coverage for most of prime time.

You will never win over some people, it's like beating a dead horse but we all agree to disagree and enjoy the event.

I enjoy all of the skating events. I just expect more variety in the coverage. The coverage should include ice dancing, it just shouldn't be dominated by one event.

mcmoose, it used to be that figure skating in all it's forms was a huge ratings booster. It had a lull until the Harding/Kerrigan debacle and that brought the people back. I'm not sure how the ratings are anymore. I just really enjoy the skating, but I do enjoy the other sports as well. I'm actually forcing the hubby to watch (I'm the sports nut in my family).

Yes Fantastic Program by the Italians .... They might have been able to medal if not for the fall yesterday... especially with the home country advantage... Diva for sure... they just showed her partner balling his eyes out backstage after their skate. :( Poor Guy...

posted by skydivedad at 09:51 PM on February 20, 2006

Okay. Does anyone see my point? Right now NBC is spending more time on skaters warming up than they did on ski jumping or ski racing.

mcmoose, I'll play the devil's advocate. Maybe it's because the U.S. for the first time since Innsbrook will get a medal for ice dancing. I'm not saying that is the real reason, because tomorrow the ladies program begins. Although, if you notice, they aren't showing every skater. It's always the top 3, the U.S., the Russians, the Italians (it's their home) and maybe a couple of others. The problem is there is at least 2 teams from each country. But I do understand your frustration.

The acrobatic ski thing was just prelims, so they're not going to focus on it. And they did show two other different downhill skiing events.

And they did show two other different downhill skiing events. One of which was primarily kissing Bode Miller's butt before he choked...again. Not to change the subject, but I am SO glad he's proving to be a joke with all the media coverage he gave himself and all the money spent hyping him. I work third shift, so I was asleep during most of the competition. Dancing is hard enough (take it from someone who can't even walk straight without stumbling without assorted alcoholic beverages), so doing it on ice should be a sport. Then again, I'm a racing fan (and yes, racing IS a sport! :p)

Sport or not....those chicks are hot.

posted by GoBirds at 05:07 AM on February 21, 2006

Will someone explain why this is not a sport? Is it because they are not hitting, kicking or throwing a ball? Is it because it's "pretty" and they wear costumes? The definition of sport is any activity that gives enjoyment or recreation; pastime; diversion. Now, not everyone might like skating, but then again not everyone likes basketball either. But according to this definition, skating is a sport.

posted by lil'red at 06:54 AM on February 21, 2006

lil'red, if I've learned one thing from this site, it's that everyone's definition of sport is wildly different. Ice dancing walks that line closer than most.

Sport or not....those chicks are hot. Speaking of hot chicks on skates, I was awfully suprised to see how many good looking gals there are on the USA's womens hocky team! Unfortunately, didn't get to compare them to the East German's team.

i just read today that the gold medal pair train about 15 minutes from my home. and silvia fontana of italy trains just over in hackensack. i had no clue that north jersey was a hot bed for figure skating.

This is not a sport. Ice Dancing is what you do on the way to the car when you forget to salt the driveway. This is without a doubt the poorest excuse for an olympic sport (excluding curling) that I have ever seen.
