Martz dismissed by the Rams: After weeks of anticipation, the Rams finally announced the end of Martz's tenure in St. Louis.

As a loyal St. Louis Rams fan, I have two opinions on this. As far as losing him as head coach. I say good riddance. He was a terrible head coach. He made poor decisions and was a terrible leader. He was confrontational with the front office, he was rough with the media and his players and the fans did not like him. A new head coach is definitely in order. As far as losing his offensive prowess, the Rams are certainly going to miss that. He was an offensive genius and some other team is going to get the benefit of that. However, overall it was a good decision and I am very interested to see what happens with the coaching staff in the coming weeks.

The Rams have the weapons on offense, they should get a defensive minded coach who can run the defense because the Rams have the playmakers to get it done on offense no matter who is there coach (although there may be a drop in production, I don't know).

I too am a Rams fan. I think he was a great clipboard coach but a terrible manager on the field. I'm glad he's gone. I hope they pick one of the top defensive coordinators for the head coach job. Or, hey Lovie, wanna come back?!

posted by STLCardinalfan at 10:26 AM on January 02, 2006

FINALLY!! That puts an end to several wasted years. Hopefully the Rams put some thought into the decision of who to hire and bring in an actual head coach. Martz should have never been allowed to run a team. Hey, Dick Vermiel just retired for about the 10th time. Maybe he......ah, never mind.

I'm personally happy he's gone. I've been a rams fan since 1998. I'm only fifteen. It was a big mistake putting Martz as a head coach. They should have left him as only an offensive cooridinator. He could've kept his amazing offensive mind to the offense in stead of the whole team, where the defense can't tackle and the o-line can't hold up. I hope they redo the Defense and Offensive line. We need some fresh blood on the offensive line instead of looking for retired, battered up Old offensive linemen. The playmakers are there, but can't come through when they want because in order to score you must first have protection. They need to pick defensive players very strictly because we need some more talent on the defense. Well, I think this makes a good first step towards a great improvement of a team. This team might never be as great as it used to be for a very long time. Let's just sit back and hope for our amazing rams to come back to life.

MANY OF YOU MUST REALIZE THAT THE COACH IS AS GOOD AS THE TEAM,QB AS GOOD AS THE WR AND LINE PROTECTION. ORGANIZATION AS GOOD AS THE DEDICATION IT PUTS INTO WINNING. ALL NFL TEAMS ARE PROS! THE HEART YOU PUT INTO PLAYING IN COLLEGE LEAVES MANY PLAYERS WHEN THEY GET PAID. ANY PLAYER THAT DOES NOT LEAVE HIS HEART ON THE FIELD EVERY GAME SHOULD NOT TAKE HOME HIS CHECK! ELITE PLAYERS ARE THE REASONS WHY WE WATCH.DEACON JONES,DICK BUTKIS,RONNIE LOTT,RAY LEWIS, DEION SANDERS AND OTHERS MADE YOU SCARED TO PLAY! WHY? THE DEDICATION TO THE GAME WITH THE SKILL THEY BROUGHT.LOTT HAD A PIECE OF HIS FINGER REMOVED SO HE COULD PLAY SOONER!!! MARTZ HAS A SYSTEM THAT WORKS WITH ANY TEAM IF THEY USE THE SAME DEDICATION. THE COLTS HAVE DONE NOTHING DIFFERENT IN THE PAST SIX YEARS ON OFF. THEY PREPARE DIFFERENTLY ON DEFENSE. NOW THEY CAN SCORE 30 AND KEEP YOU FROM DOING THE SAME. ALL OPINIONS TO THE SIDE. I AM GLAD THE MAN IS ALIVE! HE NEEDS TO BE WORKING LIKE OTHERS. DO NOT BEG FOR M. LEWIS OR ANY OTHER HEAD COACH TO RETURN. AS A FAN YOU COMMAND THAT THE NEXT MAN THAT COMES IN GIVES YOU THE SAME DEDICATION YOU WANT TO SEE.

AASR, please stop shouting. We can hear you just fine without capslock on. Are you saying that the Rams weren't putting forth an effort, and that's why Martz was fired?

MANY OF YOU MUST REALIZE THAT THE COACH IS AS GOOD AS THE TEAM... Disagree. Martz was not as good as his team. Stupid play calling, poor time management, overuse of his red flag and under-utilization of Marshall Faulk, just to name some, were not the fault of the team. Without Martz they were probably 8-8 or 9-7 this year. Maybe better if Bulger hadn't gone down.

This Rams fan bids farewell to "The biggest SCHMO on turf"! Hoping to see Mike Tice in town for at least an interview. Yeah, he's got some baggage, but the organization seems, at times, to be owned by Samsonite, from "the Queen bee" on down. Don't wait too long on this one. You've had PLENTY of time to get a short list together. Hmmm...I wonder if Rich Brooks isn't sitting by the phone...

AASR-AF&AM Your use of allcaps in all your posts is extremely disrespectful to all the members who came before you. If your only excuse is I USE THE CAPS BECAUSE I DO NOT LIKE TYPING! then I suspect your ability to carry on adult conversation is lacking. chicobangs asked you nicely to not shout and your response is continued disrespect. Your excuse is pathetic and unacceptable. If you joined to make a positive contribution, great , if you want to continue to act like a child just go away.

Why does it bother people so much that, caps are used, bold gets used... Who cares if someone writes with capslock on or puts in bold words? Does this distract you that much that you are unable read what the person has written? chicobangs asked you nicely to not shout and your response is continued disrespect. Take your nose out of his ass and have some thoughts of your own. I have read many of chicobags posts and he seems fairly capible of defending himself.

(Unlike a lot of people who comment here, I will only speak for myself. But all-caps is shouting, and this isn't an airplane tarmac or a war zone. if you feel like your words alone aren't enough to make your point, and you feel you need to use all caps or personal epithets & attacks or rhetorical firebombs to get your point across, then maybe you should think again about what it is you're really trying to say before you barf it out incoherently all over the place. Now, can we stay on topic?) I agree that Martz kind of underfperformed, but this is going to be a good offseason for finding a new and proven coach, as long as the Rams act quickly. There are significant holes they'll need to fill (specifically on the Offensive and Defensive lines), and the sooner they set up their front office so they can set up the field personnel, the better off they'll be.

Rams fans want to trade a Superbowl winning coach, for the other kind? How about Marty S., it amazes me that Martz and Tice are out of a job, and Marty is still here. Did anyone notice that Tuna let Terry Glenn play after he was arrested Friday for drunkeness, hanging it out behind a fast food store in Dallas. YOu think you've got troubles. The Rams won last night, the team that Mike built.

posted by Two Buck Chuck at 02:34 PM on January 02, 2006

Martz and Tice will get coordinator jobs somewhere, and both will be head coaches again in the NFL. I get the feeling there was some extra friction between Martz and the Rams higher-ups. That happens sometimes. Used-to-bes don't count anymore, they just lay on the floor till you sweep them away. I don't think anyone is looking at either of those two as unemployable now. It was just time for a change, as it sometimes is.

True indeed! why they figured Warren could do the same in AZ was beyond me. Different styles.

posted by AASR-AF&AM at 02:48 PM on January 02, 2006

Rams fans want to trade a Superbowl winning coach, He won the Super Bowl as an offensive coordinator where I have no problem with his talents. However, as a head coach he has demonstrated, time after time, he's not up to the challenge.

posted by STLCardinalfan at 02:49 PM on January 02, 2006

Warren You mean Warner? I think he's a great fit in Arizona. Two time MVP QB hooking up with 2 pro-bowler receivers. Ain't too shabby. All that's missing is a running attack to take the pressure off having to throw the ball all day making it easy for any defensive unit to know what's coming.

posted by STLCardinalfan at 02:58 PM on January 02, 2006

Not to jump in off the subject, but the I understand the reason why people don't like the CAPSLOCK, not because it is shouting but because I think it is harder to read a long post that is in CAPS rather than in lower case. Sorry for the digress. Martz On...

posted by mcstan13 at 03:00 PM on January 02, 2006

If the head coaches did as Jimmy Johnson did i guarantee you many things would change. If you only played for one down he needed you to be exxxxxceptional on that down! Da' Bears were being skinned by the cowboys one year and a notable back up was in the game in relief of E. Smith. Chris Zorich hit him at the four yard line and he fumbled for a Bears TD.Still losing by 124 million J.Johnson cut him at the end of the game.Could have been up by five and that cost them the game when ES needed rest.Pats were like that when they won!No big eyes and little you's.Do your part.

Please do not thrash me for my transgressions. No thrashing here. By the way, mcstan13 is right. It's much harder to read caps, at least for me anyway.

posted by STLCardinalfan at 03:19 PM on January 02, 2006

There are a lot of coaches out there who cannot take that step "backwards" and do what they do best - like coordinating offenses. Martz did that extremely well. Another coach who cannot take that step "backwards" is Norv Turner. Martz will surface somewhere in the NFL - or maybe at a faltering program at the college level - and he will win a few more big games. Hopefully he will have learned a valuable lesson as to where he can most benefit a football organization. In the final tally, I gotta admit, Martz did give us some pretty exciting offensive displays. Thanks for the memories, Coach.
