"I did everything I possibly could to get back and finish my career the way I would have liked to, my injuries just wouldn't let me do it." Allan Houston announces his retirement today. Maybe this explains why the Knicks used their exception on the Junkyard Dog instead of AH.

I read in the ESPN article that the Kicks still have to pay him... something about it being insured. Can anyone explain that?

from what i caught on the radio today, insurance will pay about 80% of his salary with the knicks kicking in the rest. but that could be completely untrue as i was trying to navigate through north jersey rush hour traffic whilst listening.

uh, forget what i said about that 80%. according to this insurance will pay about $25MM of the $40MM left on his contract.

I think the Orlando Magic has more to be upset about with the way Grant Hill turned out than NY does about Houston.

mayerkyl: Grant Hill played 67 games last year and averaged 19.7 points per game. He's not what he used to be but he's still going and he's still pretty good. It's easy to forget how good Houston was in his prime. He's up there with Reggie Miller and Larry Bird as one of the best pure shooters to ever play the game. When he got hot, you could put a hand right in his face and he'd still rain treys on you.

I for one am not going to miss this pussy. He couldn't drive to the net if his life depended on it. I really don't think there is much of a comparisson between him and Bird or even the hated Reggie Miller. Why they gave such a ridiculous contract to a one dimensional player I'll never know.

Grant Hill played 67 games last year True, but how many games per season has Orlando got out of Hill as opposed to Houston in NY? It seems to me that overall, Houston was far more productive in NY than Hill has been in Orlando. And I wouldn't put Bird or Reggie in the same sentence with......... well if I said his name he'd be in the same sentence. You can't compare what someone does in flashes to what superstars did over an entire career.

Houston wasn't much one for going to the hole, but neither was Reggie. Scott's statement stands up. Houston is one of the best pure shooters to play the game. Why they gave such a ridiculous contract to a one dimensional player I'll never know. James Dolan had a serious case of the man-love for Houston. Sure he wasn't an ALL-NBA 1st teamer, but he was an All-Star, and a stand-up guy on a team that featured such luminaries as Chris Childs, Latrell Sprewell, and John Wallace. That has to amount to something right?

Hey - when Houston signed the deal most people in NY rejoiced at the thought of having him for the entirety of his career. He was a deadly player, no doubt. He became an albatross only after a few years, when it became apparent that his body would prevent him from playing any shred of defence and could no longer create his own shot. But at the time - it just seemed like a necessary move to keep one of the best pure shooters in the league around.

I don't remember any rejoicing. I remember a collective shock at the obscene amount of money they were paying him. It was far above what any other team would pay him and completely unnecessary amount to keep him in the fold.
