Second cyclist dead at Dakar, stage cancelled: With approx. two dozen deaths since 1979, this year seems to have doubled the rally's average.

both riders belonged to team KTM, which is suggesting remaining KTM riders withdraw

Of the two dozen killed I wonder what the breakdown is for motorcycle vs. car vs. truck drivers. I seem to remember some car drivers getting shot or something a few years ago.

The bike riders are the bravest on the Dakar - so little protection, and having to do the navigation as well as piloting - but the trucks are an awesome spectacle.

And don't forget Richard Sainct died three months ago too. This has been a bloody harsh Dakar this year, and ironically they changed the route considerably this year in the interests of safety.
