Who's up for a fantasy league fantasy league?

If I had access to the channel, I would definitely watch it every so often. A few questions:

  1. What period length are they using? If it's just 5 minute periods, you could get a lot of games on the program, but the stats might be a bit off. If it's 20 minute periods, then you could end up with some REALLY freaky stats if the game is out of whack (14-11 scores, or something like that).
  2. Is it CPU vs CPU? - If there are humans playing the game, then it's definitely going to throw something off. What if the guy controlling the Hurricanes wins the first 40 games in a row? That's going to be a bit unrealistic.
  3. Any chance they'll put together a highlight package to view on the web? Best hits, best goals, best saves? I'd download that for sure.
  4. If the Toronto Maple Leafs win, can we still have the Stanley Cup? Please?!

Neat. Grum, you ask some very good questions. I'll add #2b: If they are human players, how many players will be playing for each club? I just emailed them. I'll let you know if I hear back.

4. If the Toronto Maple Leafs win, can we still have the Stanley Cup? Please?! Geez, speaking of "a bit unrealistic." So, have you Leaves fans had your Stanley Cup parade yet? heh heh *sigh* I miss hockey already. I am thisclose to ducking out of work on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to watch the 'Canes (the ones that are in town) practice at a local rink.

This is hilarious. I'll check it out.

I think I remember the Toronto Sun doing one of these "simulations" and having the Leaves win. Surely there was no stat-weighting involved. Only in computer-land, fortunately. I like this idea though. It gives me a reason to keep up my daily NHL news fix, at least.

What will be the fate of Todd Bertuzzi? He's still suspended, IRL...will his suspension be lifted in this league?

In my personal EA Sports land, the Sens just beat Buffalo 4-1. I can provide more regular updates if you guys want me to. Meanwhile, to add to grum's questions: 5. What specific piece of software are they using?

Hm, I just saw the tiny credit on the screenshot: ESPN NHL 2k5. Is this indeed what they're using?

They should use NHL '94 instead.

But then Jeremy Roenick would be invincible. Not that the Leafs fans would notice any difference.

Ah, this is the owner's ultimate league! No unions, no players, pure profit! Ah, sweet profit!

I just got a reply to my email of questions... Apparently, not everything has been decided, but it's definitely CPU vs CPU. And "There will be LOTS of web content."

posted by 86 at 03:24 PM on September 23, 2004

oooh LOTS! (i know people miss hockey, but really, in a non-lockout season it wouldn't have really started by this time. the World Cup was just an tempting morsel and... pay no attention to me. I missed the last two seasons while living overseas, so my 'missing of hockey' sensors are totally screwed up).

If anything will bring the labour unrest to an end quickly, it will be decent ratings for this show.

This is a pretty stupid idea. The CPU vs. CPU simulation is deterministic, unlike real life which is not (hence the excitement of sports).

posted by molafson at 04:31 PM on September 23, 2004

Not to mention that it's probably a pretty poor simulation.

It's a bit of fun. Quit whining. Yeesh! I'm glad there's a lockout. NO FUCKING HOCKEY! WOOHOO! (And I say this as a Canadian.) I hope the NHL never comes back. Seriously. Perhaps if there's no hockey the sports channels will realise there are actually sports outside of hockey and football between October and May.

Or on it. Whichever.

Into the couch with him! And we shall sit on the couch with him inside and watch recordings of the 1972 Summit Series in its entirety. And them maybe watch it again, but CPU vs CPU this time.

You're so sleeping in the couch tonight. This made me laugh WAY too much. I just can't shake this image of someone shoving a INTO the folds of a couch while yelling "You spoke ill of hockey! This is your punishment!"
