The Oregon Ducks' new roadside-prisoner football uniforms have met their match: The school's marching band has also received Nike duds, and they look like the least ferocious troops of Gran Mof Tarkin.
This is what happens when men who know all about football have to approve clothing lines. Whoa... That is some oo-ga-lee shee-it. The bands unis are actually frightening. I'd dress in the dark.

Why does the band need helmets? That's just weird. I had thought that maybe Cincinnati had been doing the solid jerseys/pants thing longer than Tech, but I could be wrong. I actually kind of like the look in general, but it depends on the colors. I do hate the whole "ad-speak" of the U of O article though. The uniforms were created to match the UO's current "irreverent" image created by Nike. Ugh.

OK, it's the helmets. They look kinda cool, when it's the full football-player version but, the band version is just ... what's the word? Retarded.

I think the band outfits are awesome. I only wish that my university (U of Iowa) would do something like this. It would create a consistent color scheme for everything, done fashionably by good designers.

But of what use are the band helmets, meanie? In case an errant trombone clocks someone upside the noggin? Or if a draft catches one of the color guard flags?

The band helmets rock!!! they are for nothing more than decoration purposes (and the occasional deflection from road trip nightmares).

Nike has had a strong influence in the Oregon Athletic department has been nascent, especially since that little brou-ha-ha over prison labor was smoothed over. Phil Knight is a Oregon grad, and has given a bunch of money to Oregon, (is he receiving a tax deduction on it?) in exchange for marketing consulting for doing wild stuff like this. Since then the marketing arm of Nike has: - changed the uniforms twice in the past 6 years. This year they included a alternate road uniform. (how many football teams have that?) - gotten rid of the old cutesy Donald Duck knock-off mascot in favor of a gay, body-building duck mascot - now changed the band uniforms - they've also consulted on the new artificial turf that was installed in Auzten Stadium

those are actually their older uniforms. Which are also horrible. But not quite as bad as the flourescent yellow ones. What ever happened to their simpler, Green Bay-style look with yellow pants? I don't get the dark jersey with dark pants look that so many teams are adopting. Off the top of my head in the NFL, Denver, Atlanta, and Cincy started this this year, and of course the Blue Man Group and Bills were doing it last year. Why mess with a good thing? It looks ridiculous. The first team I ever saw doing it was Texas Tech, several years ago. Which made me laugh, the morons decked themselves out in black head to toe voluntarily in the 100 degree heat of texas, while their opponents were all white and much cooler.
