WGN Anchor Goes on Epic Rant About Rules for Covering Olympics: Fed up with the restrictions on video and logo usage imposed by NBC Universal on other TV networks and stations, WGN sports anchor Pat Tomasulo had an entertaining Howard Beale meltdown. "I'm not even going to report on the Olympics, I'm going to report on that other event that's going on -- the international athletic competition run by one of the most corrupt organizations in the world," he says.

It's a really interesting situation in Canada.

CBC (national broadcaster) has the rights.

They've sold some of them to TSN (one national sports station) and they broadcast events on 4 different channels.

They've also sold some of the rights to SportsNet (another national sports network, and blood rivals with TSN), and they broadcast events on one of their channels.

However...

In the SportsCenter highlight shows every night, TSN can show actual highlights of the events (video) when talking about them. The soccer goals, rubgy tries, swimming finishes, gymnastic leaps, etc...whatever they want.

In the SportsCentral highlight shows every night, SportsNet can only show still images of the events when talking about them. Here is a still image of the Canadian soccer player celebrating! Here is a still image of the American swimmer standing in the starting blocks! Here is a still image of competitors standing around before the beginning of the beach volleyball tournament!

It's very weird.

I'm sitting in Canada now, reading the sports news on the Boston Globe website, and I tried to view a video clip that had been linked in one article. Up comes a video clip from NBC, and before anything will play the screen goes to black with white lettering that says, "This content is not available in your country". Now I suppose I could go looking through Canadian sources, but the likelihood of finding video clips of Ali Raisman in gymnastics or Nate Ebner in rugby 7s is not great. Come on, guys, I'm from Boston. Give me a break!
