Titans Fire Ken Whisenhunt, Make Mike Mularkey Interim Coach: The Tennessee Titans have fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt. He was 3-20 leading the team, which has begun this season 1-6. The team's defense has improved to 5th this season after being 27th last year, but the offense has been abysmal, scoring one touchdown and 13 points the past nine quarters. "There's not much I can say," he told reporters after Sunday's loss. Former Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey becomes the interim head coach.

Some reports have Saban wanting this job, for reasons not entirely clear. Other than the fact that it's another reclamation and rebuilding project.

Give it to Kiffin. The amount of 24 hour armed escort he'd need if he took it would be a boost to the regional economy.

I might have linked to this story about an anti-Lane Kiffin political attack ad in Tennessee from last year, but I just found out that it won an award for attack ads.

Meanwhile, the AFC South is so bad, the Titans are still in contention at 1-6. Here's hoping someone wins the division at 6-10!

You're aiming too high!
If you assume that the AFC South teams lose EVERY non-division game here on out, and the remaining intra-divisional games break right...

Week 11: Titans beat Jaguars
Week 13: Titans beat Jaguars (again)
Week 14: Jaguars beat Colts
Week 15: Texans beat Colts
Week 16: Titans beat Texans
Week 17: Colts beat Titans
Week 17: Jaguars beat Texans

Total wins (current + remaining intra-divisional)

Colts (3+1) = 4
Texans (3+1) = 4
Jaguars (2+2) = 4
Titans (1+3) = 4

You'd then have to use tie-breakers to determine which 4-12 team would get home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

If Tomsula, injuries and retirements weren't screwing the Niners so badly I'd be laughing at Grum's analysis.

I'd guess that Whiz will end being another Norv - totally inept at being a head coach, but highly regarded as an offensive coordinator. He'll get another job at the end of the season, if not sooner.
