Yu Darvish May Need Tommy John Surgery: The Texas Rangers had the most games lost to injuries last season and appear to have beat the all-time record. Just a few days into spring training ball they may have lost ace Yu Darvish for the season and possibly more. He's considering Tommy John surgery after an MRI found a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.

Ugh. Between this and Profar, this is starting to feel way too deja vu-y to last season and spring training has barely started. Sucks for a lot of people, but you have to wonder how this'll impact Jeff Banister's tenure as manager (through no fault of his own). I guess they'll be sellers this year. Again.

Sprained? Just sprained? Rub some dirt on it and get back on the mound.

I don't understand how a sprain is already cause for the Tommy John discussion.

If his season is over, the Rangers are done unless there's a miracle waiting for them at Double or Triple A.

"Sprain" means "torn ligament". The severity is what determines how bad it is. In Darvish's case, he has a Level 2 sprain. Given how it's now a recurring injury, they're considering Tommy John surgery.
