RIP Earl: and Tito.

Earl Morrall was the best backup QB I ever saw. I still can't believe what he did for the Colts and Dolphins when I was coming of age. He never looked young, never looked fast, never looked hip. Just quintessentially got the job done.

Other than in SB III, a loss that is nowhere near as defining as all the wins he produced as a stand-in for two franchise QB's -- after years of hanging tough and staying in the pros, fluctuating between being a starter and a backup with other teams.

Other backups have had great runs over the years, but to me, Morrall was/is the gold standard. I have spent a lot of time ruminating about what that guy accomplished.
