Roy Halladay To Retire

What a strange end to a strange career. Sorry to see injuries derail a great player.

Short on details that I can find as to why he's retiring. His age and the surgery on that bone spur wouldn't necessarily derail his comeback. And he never *did* win that Championship...

That said, while some of the counting stats are a touch low, he's a sure thing HoFer in my book. Almost 100 more wins than losses, 2x Cy winner eith multiple top 5 finishes, two no-hitters in the same year, and widely regarded as the #1 ace in the entire league for several years.

I had hoped he'd sign an incentive-laden contract with the Jays, so I'm bittersweet it ends like this.

HOF? If they haven't cleared out the massive backlog of players by the time he arrives to the ballot, I don't think he's getting in any time soon.

His 10-year peak (2002-2011) is incredible (averaged (for 162 game season) 146 ERA+, 20 wins, 8 CG, 246IP, 4.57K/BB ratio), and that includes the two seasons he was injured (2004 & 2005).

Throw in the fact that he's generally regarded as one of the nice guys (he asked for a trade to a contender, and EVERYONE involved (fans, management, teammates) felt no ill-will towards him), and I'd have no problem letting him in.

He's basically what Jack Morris thinks he was, except with Cy Young Awards and a much better ERA.

The Lions/Eagles game yesterday marked the first time in 56 years where no points were scored on kicks. The Lions attempted one extra point, which was blocked. Schwartz had to call a timeout beforehand to give his players time to clear a spot for Akers to kick from.

What else could it be (other than injury)? Watching him pitch in his final game, throwing 80 mph and sweating profusely to just do that, and knowing how great he was... easily one of the more painful things i've seen on a ball field.

After that they kind of spun it as him hitting a wall after surgery and he just needed time. I never really bought that. And even if time could help, he'd probably never be close to the pitcher he was, and he seems too prideful to just stick around.

No repeat of Brazil fans' violence at World Cup: FIFA because, er, money and (police) guns?

"Three people were seriously injured when fans fought running battles at the Atletico Paranaense v Vasco da Gama match on Sunday and at least 30 people have been killed in incidents in and around Brazil's stadiums this year."

Shanahan is thinking about benching RG3 for the season. Why not just resign now?

The No Fun League is trying to make getting to it's marquee event as difficult and miserable as possible.

Gawd, those Super Bowl gameday prohibitions are stupid. Screw 'em. I would just go tailgate at the Vince Lombardi Rest Stop on the NJTP.

Wonder if they're going to hold Media Day outdoors at a swank location in Jersey City?

Why not have a little fun pissing off Dan Snyder on your way out?
