Ohio State Falls, Auburn Likely to Face Florida State: Ohio State's winning streak ended at 24 games as the Buckeyes lost 34-24 to Michigan State, a defeat that appears all but certain to put Auburn in the National Championship game Jan. 6. They would face undefeated Florida State, which rolled over Duke in the ACC Championship Game.

Well, good thing we had over 50 posts about the possibility of OSU being passed over in the BCS standings.

*AHEM*

Doesn't Ohio State need to get past Michigan State's defense next week before we talk about whether or not the Buckeyes deserve a shot at the national title game?

To be perfectly fair, it's not like the BCS has *never* taken a team that straight-up lost its conference title game.

OSU and Bama can hug it out for the Capital One Insufferable Coach Bowl.

I think that Michigan States offense had as much to do with their victory as the defense did. Impressive job by the Spartans.

Auburn and Florida State. If you'd told me before the season started that it would come down to those two teams, I'd have laughed and happily offered to relieve you of your money.

*DOUBLE AHEM*

I have been looking at Michigan State being the team that finally puts Ohio State out of our misery once and for all. The Spartans win next week, and we will have a Florida State vs. SEC champ title game. If we're forced to sit through another Buckeye national title game debacle, it will ruin a tremendous college football season.

The Rose Bowl ought to be fun to watch. If Coach D'Antonio's facial muscles can recover from all the smiling he did late in the game and can revert to their normal position.

I think they'll need more than a handheld calculator to compute the over/under for the title game.

I think they'll need more than a handheld calculator to compute the over/under for the title game. Unless Auburn decides to play defense. Auburn gave up 40-plus twice, 38 once and 20-29 points four times. Florida State may have been helped by the ACC schedule, but it allowed only 17 points or less in 12 games (34 against Boston College).

Are Michigan alums all good with State being the ones to deep six the Buckeyes?

Judging from the twitters, yes.

We woulda rather it'd been us, but the UM attitude regarding MSU success is still very much "Good for you!" followed by a patronizing pat on the head.

Penn State had a better Big 10 record than Michigan this year. *pats Michigan on head*

First time in my life I've actively cheered for Michigan State. It felt...weird.

Penn State really oughtn't be patting anyone on the head just yet. Give it a few more years and it won't be quite so creepy.

posted by Etrigan at 02:02 PM on December 08, 2013

I think you misconstrue who I root for. I'm totally fine if Penn State has their dick on Michigan's shoulder and is peeing in their apple cider. Typical Wolverines move to go 3-5 and shit on Ohio State for losing one game in two years. (Albeit Urban is a douche.)

Still a bad analogy when discussing Penn State.

There's no such thing as a bad analogy in this particular rivalry.

Seriously? Being happy our biggest rival lost is "shit[ting] on" them?

Also, I can assure you that there isn't a Michigan fan in the world who thinks there's any form of "rivalry" between us and Penn State. Sorry.

FSU vs Auburn for the "National Title" ... anyone think these are the 2 best teams?

FSU has an impressive set of wins vs opponents like Bethune - Cookman, and Auburn is from - yes, the SEC, where 5 teams are granted top 10 status every year yet nobody ever can figure out how good they are until they play in bowl games.

Give me Ohio State, Michigan State, and Louisville against either of the "top 2" teams.

posted by cixelsyd at 08:38 PM on December 08, 2013

Really?

The same Louisville with its impressive set of wins against...UCF? Connecticut? Ohio State who, after barely beating a pathetic Michigan team, loses to Michigan State?

And yes, the SEC, whose teams have won the past seven national championships, is 17-8 in BCS bowls since 1998, and has more bowl wins than any other conference since 1998.

More teams than any other conference since 1998, too.

posted by Etrigan at 11:10 PM on December 08, 2013

Not that I don't agree that the SEC is on top of the college football world right now, but "SEC champion" should not equal "BCS title game participant" without any further qualification, any more than "undefeated AQ team" should automatically put a team in the game.

Self-respecting Michigan fans shouldn't be so happy their in-state rival beat their out-of-state rival for them. But do Michigan fans with self-respect exist is the question? Sorry. Go for one point next year. Glad you guys survived Akron. *drops mic, walks off*

Florida State is clearly one of the two best teams. How can you possibly argue otherwise, given how they beat Clemson, Miami and Duke? Nobody has been able to stay on the field with the Seminoles all year. Their margin of victory is ranked No. 1 the FBS.

I'm just sad to see that the NIU Cindy Crawfords won't be in the title game. They had a legitimate claim to the game, but alas, them Bowlers of Bowling Green got in the way.
