Pick a state, any state, and see what they have contributed to the sports world. As for Washington, we gave you Jon Stockton, Earl Anthony, and Phil Mahre. Via the Sports Frog...

What? What? KEYSTONE STATE. In fact, I'll leave out Wilt Chamberlain and just go with the greater Pittsburgh area for Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Josh Gibson, Arnold Palmer, Honus Wagner, Dan Marino, Ditka, etc. Must be sumpin' in the Iron City Beer.

My friend and fellow Sportsfilterian Chad is from West Virginia, and when other Los Angelenos mock his small town upbringing, he is quick to point out that we Lakers fans owe every championship banner we own to the State of West VA, which produced Jerry West, winner of our first championship & GM during the team building of all our following championships.

For a few chuckles look at Maine. I think their biggest acheivement is that a boxing match took place there once.

Michigan: 8 Days over which Mickey Lolitch beat the St. Louis Cardinals three times, including Game 7 vs. Bob Gibson, during the Tigers' 1968 World Series run. The team rallied from a three-games-to-one deficit to win its first championship in 23 years. 18 NCAA Division I hockey titles won by Michigan-based schools since 1948, including the University of Michigan's nine. (I think the other 9 were won by Yooper teams.) Eat that beeyatches! ;)

Okay, NoMich, if you like numbers . . . 29 NCAA Division I wrestling titles won by Iowa-based schools, all but two since 1965. (Including 9 straight by U of Iowa.) 159 consecutive wins by Iowa State wrestler Cael Sanderson.

Well, since we're doing some friendly bragging, I'll just stick with the city I'm from - Muhammad Ali (that's kinda hard to top), Wes Unseld, Pee Wee Reese, Paul Hornung, Phil Simms, Darrell Griffith and the Louisville Slugger bat and Kentucky Derby. It's funny - Muhammad Ali almost ran over my Dad one day. My Dad grew up in the West End of Louisville, where Ali lived. Dad was going through a crosswalk and Ali screeched up to the intersection, rolled down his window and yelled "Hey kid get out of the street!" Dad still kinda holds a grudge on that... :)
