Old school (and just plain old) grump that I am, ESPN has just pissed me off. They were doing NASCAR pre-race interviews at track side when Taps starts playing. It could plainly be heard, and in the background one could see pit crews coming to attention. The ESPN interviewer just keeps on chattering, and as part of her comments says something about the pre-race ceremonies getting underway. To me this is the equivalent of walking by a grave site, yakking away, then commenting something to the effect that there's a funeral going on, but we don't care. Taps has long been something for which to keep silent and remember those who have given all. I really don't like people/networks who have no sensitivity.

United top City with a Nani strike at the death in the first Mancs derby of the season. Also known as the 2011 Community Shield. Decent game and nice contributions from all three United summer signings plus Wellbeck and Cleverly back from loans.

Nothing like a local derby to enliven the Charity Shield. (Sunder Katwala's got some interesting thoughts on why the season-opener has lost its lustre: over-familiar fixtures, less of a summer drought, and pre-season tours and prestige friendlies shown live to fans instead of reported back from a distance. He suggests taking it on tour, like the Italian Super Cup, which was held in Beijing.)

Well, the City defence really gave it some Arsenal right at the end there.

Yanks-Sox in a good game tonight. A good, long game. Somewhere Joe West is shaking his fist at a blank wall and muttering "I told you so..." over and over to no one in particular.
