NBA star Manute Bol dies : Bol died at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, where he was being treated for severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition, Tom Prichard, executive director of the group Sudan Sunrise, said in an e-mail.

“Sudan and the world have lost a hero and an example for all of us,” Prichard said. “Manute, we'll miss you. Our prayers and best wishes go out to all his family, and all who mourn his loss.”

Damn. I hate to hear he's gone, but I hate even more to hear that he was suffering pretty badly before he went. Manute was awesome on the court and off. His willingness to make a spectacle of himself after his basketball career was over in order to raise money for Sudan was nothing short of noble.

Rest in peace, big guy.

One of the great humanitarians. The world is a poorer place today.

I like what Barkley said about him...

"You know, a lot of people feel sorry for him, because he's so tall and awkward," Charles Barkley, a former 76ers teammate, once said. "But I'll tell you this -- if everyone in the world was a Manute Bol, it's a world I'd want to live in."

Very sad to hear this. RIP, and thank you for all the good work you did to try to bring peace to a war-torn nation.
