Gilbert Arenas suspended indefinitely.: Stern, not impressed by Arenas' gun play, busts out the banhammer.

Apparently Gil was packing the Austin Powers gun, a gold-plated Desert Eagle 50 caliber, made famous in this video.

I gotta say I'm 100% stunned that Arenas did this... this is the same guy that wrote fantastic blog posts on subjects as varied as intellectual property and the "Hibachis!"

Bringing the guns into the Verizon Center, though incredibly stupid, is forgivable if Gil is properly apologetic. Brandishing said firearm whether joking or not shows some seriously poor judgment, but again is forgivable if Gil is properly apologetic and willing to serve a brief suspension - perhaps do a PSA or something. Acting as if this is not a big deal and suggesting the media should be apologizing to you - now that is some serious dumbassness, and the guy should be suspended for at least the balance of this season, if not next.

I'm thinking Ron Artest + Adam Pacman Jones = Gilbert Arenas

Sad thing is he really doesn't seem like such a bad guy. It's kind of a Tiger Woods situation - as in: who'd a thunk it?

I like his reasoning for why he brought the guns into D.C. "I wanted to keep them away from my kids". Like every single place that sells firearms or ammo doesn't also sell gun cabinets. fool.

I don't think brandishing a firearm you've taken to your workplace illegally is forgivable just because you're apologetic later. But the gun joke he pulled with teammates during pregame warm-ups shows that this is all a big joke to him. I hope Stern wipes the smile off his face.

Given the awareness of all the regulations regarding handguns, simply being aplogetic doesn't cut it. The average middle school kid knows that you don't just go around flashing guns, even if you are joking.

Arenas was stupid in the whole situation. His suspension is deserving. He should be thrown out of the NBA, to prove the stupidity of these people that think they are above the law!!!

This story has been changed a number of times. At first, the story was they were literally brandishing guns at each other. Now I hear that the guns were Gilbert's and they were unloaded and Jarvis was mad because it was a joke relating to a previous card game. Bill Simmons' podcast has a breakdown.

Well, were they unloaded or not? That makes a big difference.

Man, the New York Post really screwed Arenas. It was that institution of responsible journalism that first reported this as two man pointing loaded guns at each other - and it turns out that it's a flat out lie. Yet, I bet half the people on this thread still think that's the story. Nice going, New York Post. Asshat.

Of course, that only matters in the sense of how much danger was really present. If Gilbert is unlicensed in a federal jurisdiction like DC, well - that's a whole other ballgame.

More details here.

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about this. Though, I certainly don't think a year long suspension is in order.
