Sherlock Canseco: 90% sure that Manny Ramirez is on the secret PED list. His evidence? Manny...uh...had a difficult time getting a long-term contract this summer.

Note to kids: this is what happens when you take steroids. It done gone and broke Jose's brain.

On the one hand, Canseco's a douchebag and a publicity whore.

On the other hand, he hasn't been wrong yet.

What MK said. All of it.

As much as I love Manny, I can't say that he did or didn't use steriods. I agree with MK & JG.

I'm a little surprised anyone would still be surprised if ANY player actually used steroids.

Am I the only one who thinks Manny is unimpeachable on this subject? I can't imagine him regularly remembering to do anything.

It's not that I think Jose is necessarily wrong. I don't have access to the information necessary to make that call. I do appreciate the fact he's been right on major players up until this point.

I just find his method on this particular callout to be offensive. He's gone from watching it happen, to knowing someone who knew someone, to now just guessing. It's so media whorish, and if Manny turns out to be guilty, he'll get credit for calling it even if he didn't have a legitimate reason to do so.

Manny's contract troubles stem from his age and the term he was seeking. At least, that is why the Mets took a pass. Or so I've heard. And my ears somehow never hear anything other than the truth.

Also, it probably has something to do with the fact that he is nuts.

I'm with MK, jg, and BI. And dyams. Also yerfatma. And dfleming is probably right, too. Have to agree with garfield's point.

I am an agreement slut. To call me a whore would be to imply that I got paid for it.

Canseco's been right so many times before, that I would not dismiss it just because he says it. He may not be right this time, and he does not appear to have any facts only suspicion. But it is now beyond the situation where, when he says something, you can just snicker and say "consider the source." Crap may come from a cow, but it still makes good fertilizer.

I updated the link to the LA Times column that provides more details on Canseco's conjecture. Since he made it clear that he was just guessing, and had no direct evidence, I see no harm in him voicing that speculation.

If you're in baseball, people are asking you who did 'roids. Canseco doesn't have to worry about stepping on toes -- he can say whatever he likes. That makes his viewpoint worth hearing, even if he is often a desperate and sad glory hound.

Slattern.

You're absolutely right.

It's worth hearing, but just as easily disregarded when he has nothing. And that's what he has here, absolutely nothing except a guess.

He wasn't guessing before, he knew. And he had nothing to lose by sharing. And he shared it all. And he has nothing left. And he's been gone from the game long enough that he won't be having anything new.

He might be right, he might be wrong. But at this point his guessing is no more worthy than anyone else's.
