Testing with preview and then no editing.

posted by scully at 10:09 AM on January 09

Ok...

At first I tried to post to this thread with "Post Comment" and no preview. That just ate the comment.

Then I tried to write a comment, Preview and then EDIT the post before hitting Post Comment. That too ate the post.

Then I tried writing a comment, previewing and then NOT editing before clicking Post Comment and that worked.

All of these methods should work.

posted by scully at 10:12 AM on January 09

I didn't type the escape slashes in the comments above.

posted by scully at 10:13 AM on January 09

I didn't type that one either, but I saw it in the Preview this time. I am goign to try editing the slash before hitting post this time.

posted by scully at 10:14 AM on January 09

That time I was able to edit it in preview AND click Post Comment without having to preview a second time.

I might be here all day ;)

NB: Everyone should consider copying their comments in this thread to their clipboard before clicking preview or post comment, or you run the risk of typing everything over and over and over :)

posted by scully at 10:16 AM on January 09

Fixed the escape slash problem.

posted by rcade at 10:17 AM on January 09

Working on the timestamp problem, which makes everything "12:31 PM on January 09."

posted by rcade at 10:18 AM on January 09

not only January 9, but January 9, 3388. Are we working the time-travel machine here?

I kid. Time travel's a fine thing. The updates look great, I just popped on for a second this morning and was pleasantly surprised. And the customize option works like a charm, so that's checked, far as I can tell.

posted by boredom_08 at 10:33 AM on January 09

While we're in the future, somebody jot down the next 1,376 Super Bowl winners.

posted by rcade at 10:35 AM on January 09

Er, 1,379 winners.

posted by rcade at 10:35 AM on January 09

correction: In the edit screen under "customize", text is properly spaced, ie. returns between paragraphs. However, when viewing my profile, those don't appear. Minor problem. The datestamps appear to be the only big thing.

posted by boredom_08 at 10:36 AM on January 09

Apparently I actually joined the site 6,152 years in the future. I should know pretty much everything.

posted by boredom_08 at 10:39 AM on January 09

I fixed the spacing on member profile bios.

posted by rcade at 10:42 AM on January 09

A number of errors/bugs on the profile:

terrapin has posted 45 links and 797 comments to SportsFilter and 34 links and 360 comments to the Locker Room.

The first two links (45 links and 797 comments) work, BUT include both site posts/comments as well as locker room. Conversely, neither of the second two lockerroom-specifc links (34 and 360) work.

posted by scully at 10:51 AM on January 09

When we post a comment can the refreshed page go to the anchor for the comment we made, or at least to just above the comment box? I hate having to scroll all the back down, especially in longer threads.

posted by scully at 10:58 AM on January 09

I tried to change my email address and added an ICQ number, but neither appears to have changed after updating.

posted by scully at 11:04 AM on January 09

Fixed.

posted by rcade at 11:12 AM on January 09

Er, not so much.

posted by rcade at 11:13 AM on January 09

Still working on that one ...

posted by rcade at 11:14 AM on January 09

If you are reading this and you can't post a comment at all, use the contact us page to let me know.

If you can't read the site at all, not even this message, keep it to yourself.

posted by rcade at 11:31 AM on January 09

YESSSS!!!

This just in. rcade has been voted the busted keyboard award for the best site fix of the year. The award comes with no monetary compensation, just the appreciation of a whole lot of SpoFites. Thanks for all your effort, rcade.

posted by Howard_T at 12:42 PM on January 09

Yeah. This is really good news. Thanks!

posted by geekyguy at 12:48 PM on January 09

Test. Oh, this is so sweet. Thank you pope guy. Now accept my Friendface invite. Yep, Preview works. Cool.

posted by NoMich at 01:42 PM on January 09

Glad you like it. I copped the live preview gimcrackery from Matt Haughey.

Another old/new feature that should be working properly now is subscriber columns. You can reading columns and submit a column.

posted by rcade at 01:52 PM on January 09

Will you be playing with the URI structure eventually? I ask because I noticed the "/news/" portion just now... that and I am still searching for this.

posted by scully at 02:18 PM on January 09

Repeating for testing purposes: Will you be playing with the URI structure eventually? I ask because I noticed the "/news/" portion just now... that and I am still searching for this.

posted by scully at 02:19 PM on January 09

The last two comments I made above I clicked on Post Comment (bypassing the preview) and both times I got this:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_recent_comments() in /www/html/sportsfilter.php on line 641

However, using the back button I saw that each comment had, in fact, made it through.

Just a heads-up.

posted by scully at 02:21 PM on January 09

Thanks for all the testing.

Will you be playing with the URI structure eventually?

Yup. All links should end up on the correct page even with old URIs. Are you searching for Yerfatma's interview?

posted by rcade at 02:25 PM on January 09

OIC, your own interview. Searching ...

posted by rcade at 02:26 PM on January 09

posted by scully at 02:41 PM on January 09

cool. fatal error has gone bye bye when using just Post Comment.

posted by scully at 02:41 PM on January 09

Hmm. The link is back. The comments still need to be moved over. Kinda loses something without them. ;-).

posted by rcade at 02:43 PM on January 09

BTW, for the 301 redirects or whatever you are doing:

http://www.sportsfilter.com/members/profile.cfm/460

Those no work anymore.

posted by scully at 02:51 PM on January 09

Fixed that members/profile.cfm redirect.

posted by rcade at 02:58 PM on January 09

I forgot to check on the Super Bowl winners, but I can tell you I was not surprised to find out that in the Year 2746, rcade's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson was arrested by the Intergalactic Inquisition for unspecified violations of Quandax Rule 708-b-iii (Unauthorized Use of Teleportation for Purposes of Calling into Disrepute, or Ridiculing, the Star Pope).

I'm going to try to bring that back. I'm still trying to figure out how Matt does that on MetaFilter without killing his database server.

Tried to update my profile (for the first time in years) with no luck. It looks like the changes have been accepted, but the profile stays the same. Tried logging in and out with the same results.

posted by dusted at 10:39 AM on January 11

Give it another try, dusted. I fixed the bug.

posted by rcade at 12:06 PM on January 11

rcade, I clicked on wfrazerjr's id under his Hoser's football pics and the member information came up as you, of all people.

Oh, and thanks for all the work you're doing with the site, much appreciated, as others have also said.

posted by tommytrump at 02:51 PM on January 11

rcade, it's still not working for me. I've tried logging in and out again and deleting the page content, but still none of the changes are showing up on the page. No big deal, but just another item for your list.

Thanks!

posted by dusted at 03:11 PM on January 11

I still can't make changes to my profile either, FYI.

posted by scully at 06:06 PM on January 11

I'm having trouble recreating the problem with customizing profiles. Let me know which field you're trying to change, and look for an error message at the top that might indicate why the form isn't being accepted.

posted by rcade at 08:33 PM on January 11

I have tried to change my email address and the ICQ number. There is never an error message. Just that no changes ever stick.

posted by scully at 11:04 PM on January 11

Oh man, I'm just pleased to see the old design back. Thanks.

posted by yerfatma at 08:26 AM on January 12

Hmm, that last comment was actually filled with insults and scatalogical comments. Seems to be a preview bug or something.

posted by yerfatma at 08:26 AM on January 12

So.... how about a link to the wiki?

posted by scully at 03:28 PM on January 12

My attempt to close the italics tag in this thread didn't work: http://www.sportsfilter.com/news/12726/quiet-strength

posted by scully at 07:47 AM on January 13

I doubt the problem is OS or browser-related, but since NoMich mentioned it, I had the same results in Mac OS X 105 Safari and Firefox (most recent versions of both).

posted by scully at 07:52 AM on January 13

err, 10.5 (Leopard)

posted by scully at 07:53 AM on January 13

rcade, I clicked on wfrazerjr's id under his Hoser's football pics and the member information came up as you, of all people.

Thanks for the catch. We were working on the column submission process. Fixed.

posted by rcade at 01:52 PM on January 13

Where do people think the wiki link belongs? In the header?

posted by rcade at 01:53 PM on January 13

I vote header. Where we can see the damn thing.

*doffs cap*

posted by lilnemo at 05:48 PM on January 13

I vote we drop "comments" from the navigation, and put wiki near search.

posted by scully at 08:12 PM on January 13

Wiki- not really sure, but definitely not buried. New users could really use it (not that old timers wouldn't find it useful).

posted by justgary at 08:57 PM on January 13

I guess it could also live on the about page, but the navigation will encourage its use.

posted by scully at 09:27 PM on January 13

There seems to be an issue with the handling of line breaks, at least in older threads.

posted by yerfatma at 10:56 AM on January 14

I think I've fixed the bug that prevented some users from updating their user page. The code was rejecting some home pages and displaying a "homepage is not a valid URL" error. Give it a try now. I tested it with terrapin's account and got it to work.

I have added the ability to edit your comments for 10 minutes after they are posted. You should see an "edit" link at the end of the comments when they can be edited.

posted by rcade at 11:12 AM on January 14

I was able to make changes to my profile. Thanks, rcade.

posted by scully at 11:23 AM on January 14

I do not see an edit link at the end of comment, however.

And I had to clear all of my cookies in order to post even after verifying my email address change.

posted by scully at 11:24 AM on January 14

Still no edit link. using Firefox 3.0.5 on Mac OS X 10.5

posted by scully at 11:24 AM on January 14

Feature requests:

1) When prompted to login on a page, returning the user to the page they were on when they were prompted rather than directing them to homepage.

2) An internal email system something like Metafilter's "MeMail"

posted by scully at 11:33 AM on January 14

Still no edit link. This time I am using Safari 3.2.1

posted by scully at 11:34 AM on January 14

Edit links should appear now on newly posted comments. (Crossing fingers.)

And I had to clear all of my cookies in order to post even after verifying my email address change.

Thanks for noticing that. I needed to log you out and back in to reflect your user status change. (Users who change their email address lose posting privileges until they confirm the new address.)

posted by rcade at 12:39 PM on January 14

So one can edit comments, but not posts? I forgot to look when I added a new FPP just now.

I am adding this text by using the "edit" feature which seems to work!

posted by scully at 01:35 PM on January 14

Posts are next.

posted by rcade at 02:01 PM on January 14

I wrote up the relaunch on my blog today to describe the technical underpinnings of the new code. I can't say enough good things about Smarty. I was heading towards shit creek sans paddle before I found it.

posted by rcade at 03:00 PM on January 14

I just read that article, before I saw you linked it here. Being one of the Gripers in Chief, I want to say how much I appreciate the effort...

Also, I have kept my mouth shut for a day or so now, but it seems that my actual interview is still MIA. The link to it is there, but not the interview.

In all seriousness, no hurry.

Now, get back to work!

posted by scully at 03:47 PM on January 14

Seriously though, all the work is much appreciated. Thanks to Rcade and your volunteer QA army.

Another minor note on the auto-login. When I jump directly to a post page (ie from the feed on my iGoogle), I am not logged in, but if I go to the homepage first, I am logged in. This also works going from the post page to the home page, I'm not logged in on the post, but as soon as I go to the home page, I am.

And if it matters: Mac OS X ver. 10.5.6, running Firefox 3.0.5.

posted by boredom_08 at 01:20 PM on January 15

Unless I'm mistaken, four weeks was the close-off in the original SportsFilter design.

posted by rcade at 11:54 PM on January 16

On the comments page, click the little word balloon icon next to the words "posted by" to go to that comment in the thread.

Check.

As far as the 4 weeks, can that be lengthened in the locker room? For fantasy sport thread updates or Jersey Swap/CD Swap updates? Or would a new post be the preference?

posted by BoKnows at 12:18 AM on January 17

I think a new post would be the preference, but I'm open to changing that if people feel otherwise.

No more ridiculing trolly double posts? Lamentable but understandable. I wanted to find out more about Tampa's old folks home.

posted by yerfatma at 02:41 PM on January 18

Everything looks and feels great, rcade. Thanks!

Oh, one tiny thing: the "new user" link in the individual post template is still pointing to the old .cfm page.

posted by DrJohnEvans at 12:12 PM on January 19

No more ridiculing trolly double posts?

I think we're going to give deleted posts and comments their own pages, so you'll still be able to see what you're missing.

posted by rcade at 01:12 PM on January 19

FYI, the google ads at the bottom of the pages are displaying in portrait rather than landscape.

posted by scully at 07:21 PM on January 19

The CD Swap thread has already been closed as well. I'd like to update that thread when the groups are formed. Is the locker room set to close threads early?

posted by BoKnows at 08:04 PM on January 19

BoKnows, just start a new one. Probably get everyone's attention easier anyway when it pops up in their RSS feed!

However, that being said, I think locker room posts should have a longer open lifespan than the main site.

posted by scully at 08:20 PM on January 19

I agree.

posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 11:14 AM on January 20

I think we're going to give deleted posts and comments their own pages, so you'll still be able to see what you're missing.

Is there anyway to have them all show up in some random order so nobody is sure which are comments and which are threads and everything is a jumbled mess and entirely out of context?

posted by apoch at 12:09 PM on January 20

rcade, I was just about to ask if there was a way to auto-strip the hard breaks that are always part of beaverboard's comments (I assume he composes them in Word and then pastes), but when I returned to the most recent occurrence I saw they were gone.. and you had commented immediately after. So did you do that by hand or is it coded now?

posted by scully at 09:27 AM on January 21

I stripped 'em out, because I'm not sure yet how to deal with hard breaks in comments. Did SportsFilter used to allow things like this ...

One line here
One line right below it
Yet another line?

posted by rcade at 09:50 AM on January 21

I don't recall what used to be allowed. I just found it annoying :)

posted by scully at 10:02 AM on January 21

Speaking of things popping up in people's RSS feeds, is there a feed for the Locker Room that I just haven't been able to find? I'm RSS-deficient.

posted by boredom_08 at 03:00 PM on January 21

BTW, feature or bug?

posted by scully at 03:40 PM on January 21

boredom_08: It looks like rcade currently has all the threads (main and locker room) in one feed. There is a link to that feed in the footer, but it is here too.

My guess is that until rcade is done with the overhaul, there will be only one feed.

posted by scully at 03:45 PM on January 21

There are currently three feeds: the main feed Terrapin linked, a locker room feed and a columns feed. I'm still looking for the right place to link them.

BTW, feature or bug?

Bug. Cool, though.

posted by rcade at 05:01 PM on January 21

I am still seeing locker room feeds in the main feed, right? I checked and it looked to me that the two were combined.

posted by scully at 06:04 PM on January 21

I'm not seeing locker room posts in the main feed. Which ones are you seeing?

Also, you can now edit your own posts up to 10 minutes after they have been posted. An "edit" link appears at the end of the post. There's one exception: You can't edit columns yet.

posted by rcade at 07:03 PM on January 21

My bad. I thought the Hoser's picks were Locker Room posts.

posted by scully at 08:13 PM on January 21

That locker room thread is the one I was looking for, thanks much, rcade. An idea about the feeds: perhaps the "rss feed" link could go to a page with links to each feed: main page, locker room, and column. That can be my two cents.

posted by boredom_08 at 03:09 AM on January 22

I made a change so that all posts are open to comments for four weeks instead of two.

posted by rcade at 01:12 PM on January 24

Terrapin reported another bug: "While building this new thread, I noticed I HAD to include the www. at the beginning of the URL to sportsfilter to get the system to recognize it as a valid URL."

This happened with "http://sportsfilter.com" but not "http://sportsfilter.com/". Any other examples of URLs being rejected?
