SportsFilter CD Swap:

posted by Folkways to navel gazing at 07:35 AM - 87 comments

Emails were sent this morning with all needed info to mail out CD’s, remember the deadline for shipment is Friday March 14. Here is the list of groups Dental Floss Tycoon’s Owlhouse Folkways Dr. John Evens BoKnows Terrapin Genuine Indian Guru’s Little-Brown-Bat ufezjones qbert72 Mr.Frisby Grouper Trooper’s Tron7 The Black Hand Cjets yerfatma Frank Zappa and the Mommas NoMich Tahoemoj goddam vito90 Here is a simple little Spofi CD Swap Trivia Challenge. As you may have already noticed each group name is part of a different song (some minus the ‘s to drop the plural and make singular). Some are pretty obvious while one or two may be a bit more difficult. Have Fun!

Whoo!! I'm part of the holy trinity of rock!

posted by NoMich at 08:44 AM on February 25

No sign of the email yet, but I'll get started on my music selections.

posted by scully at 10:28 AM on February 25

This is where the SportsFilter last.fm group comes in handy. I can spy on what folks on my list listen to so I can either match my songs to their taste, or I can avoid duplications. So if you haven't already joined, please do!

posted by scully at 10:57 AM on February 25

Thanks for the work Folkways. Email received.

posted by BoKnows at 11:21 AM on February 25

email received. thanks folkways

This is where the SportsFilter last.fm group comes in handy. Don't be giving away all my little secrets. I was going to empress everyone in our group with a CD catered to their individual listening habbits. ya right, I'm way to lazy for that.

posted by Folkways at 11:54 AM on February 25

got the e-mail, folkways. cd's will be in the mail by thurs. thanks for the effort!

posted by tahoemoj at 12:57 PM on February 25

Hm, Geniune Indiana Guru comes from Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show's "Cover of the Rolling Stone," and Frank Zappa and the Mommas (actually, I believe it's "the Mothers," but I could be wrong) comes from "Smoke on the Water," by Deep Purple. Zappa's "Montana" had the Dental Floss Tycoon in it (riding Mightly Little, no less!). I'm lost on Grouper Trouper, but for some reason, I'm thinking ABBA.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 01:36 PM on February 25

Is Grouper Trouper a Beefheart reference?

posted by chicobangs at 02:25 PM on February 25

Wrong fish, chico. Beefheart rocked the trout, not the grouper. heh

posted by NoMich at 02:35 PM on February 25

Where's the Cranky Old Gas Expellers group?

posted by billsaysthis at 02:45 PM on February 25

Okay. I was guessing. Trout weren't the only fish he wore.

posted by chicobangs at 03:35 PM on February 25

NoMich, goddam, and vito90 - I hope you refrain from including Nickleback on your CD's. Tahoe is twitching again.

posted by BoKnows at 03:37 PM on February 25

NoMich, goddam, and vito90 - I hope you refrain from including Nickleback on your CD's. tahoe doesn't have to worry. I have never owned anything by Nickleback in my life. I even have an applet on my computer that automatically detroys any Nickleback mp3s should any accidently make their way onto my hard drive somehow.

posted by goddam at 04:11 PM on February 25

Okay. I was guessing. Trout weren't the only fish he wore. I know, I was just trying to be funny. *sigh*

posted by NoMich at 04:44 PM on February 25

(actually, I believe it's "the Mothers," but I could be wrong) Actually I believe you're correct (depending on if you're listening to a studio cut or live cut) although I haven't looked up the lyrics. On my bootleg copy of a Deep Purple concert in Frankfurt Ian Gillan clearly belts out 'mommas" A grouper is a nasty yet edible fish found in the Gulf of Mexico among other places. I thought Grouper Trouper might be tough to get. Those receiving a CD from me will know the song and artist soon enough. and how did I know you would get these right away TBH?

posted by Folkways at 04:58 PM on February 25

Mine will go out tomorrow or the next day. (They've been ready for a while). To those in my Dental Floss group: Let me know when they arrive, I just want to make sure you get 'em. Again, Thanks Folkways.

posted by BoKnows at 06:30 PM on February 25

Mine are out on Monday, when I get back to Australia. Email received earlier. Oh goody, I get Dr J again. I'm still amused by Mime Abduction from last time.

posted by owlhouse at 08:24 PM on February 25

My final playlist isn't quite narrowed down yet, but you can be sure it won't have Nickleback. Aesop Rock will however be making an appearance.

posted by vito90 at 06:48 AM on February 26

I got a pretty bad '80s jones when I put my songs together.

posted by NoMich at 07:41 AM on February 26

I felt warm and sunny when I put my songs together. I still need more, though, so it won't be going out this week.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 10:19 AM on February 26

If you're looking for warm and fuzzy might I suggest "It's a Sunday" or "Beep Beep Love" or "Fuzzy" by The Incredible Moses Leroy (all can be found on the fantastic Electric Pocket Radio album)

posted by apoch at 10:23 AM on February 26

With all the obscure (to me) musical references made so far, I feel like I'm going to disappoint my group. It's upbeat, some mainstream stuff, some not. I guess you can salvage the jewel case if the CD sucks. (Crossing my fingers)

posted by BoKnows at 10:35 AM on February 26

Not warm and fuzzy, apoch -- warm and sunny. As in, Bahia. Yes, it's lil_brown_bat's "enough goddamn snow already" Brazilian mix.

posted by lil_brown_bat at 10:56 AM on February 26

BoKnows: Don't worry about your mix. Just express yourself, your tastes, and—if you can—include local music. Nothing you send will disappoint. Each of us is about to receive new music that didn't cost us a dime (eff the RIAA!), so why would anyone be disappointed? I look forward to receiving your mix.

posted by scully at 11:13 AM on February 26

I'm still in the selection process but should be able to make the deadline.

posted by scully at 02:32 PM on February 26

upbeat, some mainstream stuff Your upbeat, mainstream stuff is quite obscure to me I'd imagine so no need to fret mon, just go wit da flo. Y'all feel free to post set lists as we have done in the past, or keep your shit to yourself if ya want too. :)~

Y'all feel free to post set lists as we have done in the past, or keep your shit to yourself if ya want too. :)~ You can email your song lists to the original email address (spofiswap2007 AT gmail DOT com) and I will post them on the Swap web site like last year.

The Genuine Indian Guru’s will be the lucky recipients of the first CD's I make with the LightScribe DVD/CD burner that came with my new tower.

posted by MrFrisby at 07:19 PM on February 26

Dude, yer using a light saber? Fuckin sweet!

posted by NoMich at 07:35 PM on February 26

Mr. Fris, how does the LightScribe work? I just installesd one in my own, but have abso-freakin-lutely no idea how it works.

posted by tahoemoj at 08:29 PM on February 26

I got one too. Have yet to use it though. I think perhaps I shall have to learn how. (not to be outdone by my fellow Genuine Indian Guru)

posted by lil_brown_bat at 08:32 PM on February 26

Well I haven't used LightScribe yet (and apparently I'm not going to) so I don't know how it works. Yeah, I obviously need to look more at my hardware instead of my software. My software (CyberLink LabelPrint) works like your everyday CD label maker, it was relatively simple to figure out, but my burner uses Labelflash not LightScribe (software is compatible with both, hence my earlier confusion).

posted by MrFrisby at 09:26 PM on February 26

I will post them on the Swap web site like last year. Thanks goddam!

posted by Folkways at 06:52 AM on February 27

Oh boy. I kinda got on a roll and now my mix is a double CD. Is that against the rules? Should I pare it down to a single CD?

posted by NoMich at 01:03 PM on February 27

Not as far as I can see. It's your shipping costs. And everybody gets two coasters that way, so if there happens to be someone on the Internet who has a friend in real life AND they're in your group, they'll be happy.

posted by yerfatma at 01:23 PM on February 27

NoMich I ended up with a 3 CD set last year. I only sent 2 though because disc 3 was stuff not good enough to be on discs 1 or 2. Looks like this year may be a 2 disc set again, still editing songs.

posted by Folkways at 01:47 PM on February 27

mine is a two disc set as well, but it was planned from the beginning. finished the mix. working on graphics. not going to announce the track list until later.

posted by scully at 03:10 PM on February 27

Terrapin and folkways, thanks for the reassurances about my CD. I started to feel better, then I read about Light Scribe, and thought "shit", all I have is a sharpie marker. "Oh well", I thought, and blew it off. Now I'm reading about 2 disc sets, 3 disc sets, and graphics. This time my brain said, "Man, I'm a loser". Then I remembered that I burned the discs, put them in the jewel case, inserted the play list and mailed them without even using the gosh darn sharpie marker. So, your discs are not labeled at all. I have 50 GBs of music on my computer and I can't seem to make a CD. Now I feel like the noob that I am. I'm gonna need a one SpoFiSwap free pass. Unless you all like the music. Then everything's cool.

posted by BoKnows at 04:16 PM on February 27

You truly crack me up Bo. Mine are labeled using sharpies, no graphics mumbo jumbo here. Maybe once you get my CD's you wont feel so bad. I did at least label them though.

posted by Folkways at 05:53 PM on February 27

Grouper Troopers, specifically: Tron7 The Black Hand yerfatma Your CDs are in the mail. PLAY LOUD! And, by the way, it's one CD, not two, not three. I follow the rules, people! Actually, I'm only squawking because you two CD people are making me feel inadequate.

posted by cjets at 07:31 PM on February 27

My CDs will go out tomorrow. The only reason my mix is on two CDs is 'cause I got on a roll. I'm sure the folks on my list are going to wonder why I did two CDs though. The fact is, I'm not sure why either, but it's too late to go back now.

posted by NoMich at 08:18 PM on February 27

I've just posted my song list to the old address. Ear Wax Down Under, an inadequate single CD collection, will shortly be on it's way to the Flossers.

posted by owlhouse at 04:13 AM on February 28

Ok, Mothers of invention, your cds are on the way. I hope you have as much fun listening to them as I had making them.

posted by tahoemoj at 02:25 PM on February 28

Making my mixes tomorrow, it just occurred to me I don't have an email with anyone's address. Where do I go for that info?

posted by yerfatma at 04:48 PM on February 28

Yerfatma, I just forwarded you Folkways e-mail with all the addresses for our group. Hope you get it.

posted by cjets at 04:59 PM on February 28

Sorry bout that yerfatma, I haven't checked my list yet but if you didn't get the email I must have f*ed up and that shows a real lack of quality control on my part. Fire me if you must but come hell or high water you will get the addresses cause I WANT MY FATTY CD. I'll send you the email even though cjets already has and this time don't let your dog eat it.

posted by Folkways at 05:09 PM on February 28

I WANT MY FATTY CD. Does this mean we can have intergroup swapping? heh heh heh

posted by cjets at 07:03 PM on February 28

I don't think I got addresses either. Maybe that email got eaten by the penis filter or something, but usually I check...anyway, I don't have it. Resend maybe?

posted by lil_brown_bat at 07:47 AM on February 29

Hmm, I just usually let whatever's coming out right into the toilet. A filter, huh?

posted by yerfatma at 08:59 AM on February 29

A filter, huh? Made by Brita.

posted by BoKnows at 09:02 AM on February 29

The new Brita Penis Filter. Now, whatever comes out of your penis tastes as fresh as it did when it was introduced to your body. Simply affix the filter to the glans with the included roofing nails...

posted by The_Black_Hand at 09:51 AM on February 29

Roofing nails? That sounds like a poor design. You have to be able to change the filter. May I suggest clevis pins instead.

posted by MrFrisby at 10:09 AM on February 29

Why it looks like they had the application in mind all along:

posted by yerfatma at 11:42 AM on February 29

whatever comes out of your penis tastes as fresh as it did when it was introduced to your body Or in some cases, much, much, fresher.

posted by tahoemoj at 11:48 AM on February 29

There's even a "huka" style adapter. Ya know, if you were at a party or something. I guess it could be considered recycling, so this is good for the earth and all of us.

This has gotten a little strange so I'm going to go ahead and close it before it gets stranger. posted by justgary Not that this thread hasn't made a hilarious turn, I'm just trying to beat Gary to the punch.

Great stuff y'all, I knew there had to be some reason I keep cumming back here. Re-sending the email LBB, if others have not checked the mail at the address used for the swap ya better do so. Apparently the mass send didn't catch everyone.

posted by Folkways at 02:42 PM on February 29

posted by MrFrisby at 10:17 PM on February 29

Yeah, i'm waiting four at least four digits, but I preferr five.

posted by hawkguy at 07:50 AM on March 01

Thanks to tahoemoj, I got CD number one today. So far it's been very illuminating. The first Eels song I went, "So that's who they are! I've always kinda liked this song." Then the Cake song kicked in and I was all like, "Hey! This is the theme song for that couple that does the special 'on the road' report for NPR's Splendid Table." So far, it's been a very good house cleaning mix. I have a feeling that it may be getting a lot of life in my back deck's boombox this coming summer.

posted by NoMich at 11:57 AM on March 01

Glad you approve NoMich.

posted by tahoemoj at 02:11 PM on March 01

I will be mailing mine out Monday. Actually, they have been ready and in their BubbleBeds for shipment for 2 weeks. I only had .48 cents in the bank though and the lady at the post office said my CD would have to swim to Australia at that price.

posted by Folkways at 04:12 PM on March 01

That's funny, Folkways. My mix is done, but I am not pleased with the covers. I am using a different case than in the past so I am working with something new. Patience, please :)

posted by scully at 09:13 AM on March 03

I got my first Dental Floss CD this morning and wow does BoKnow how to mix music. Excellent combination of stuff I know like Alan Parsons, the Toadies, and Lenny Kravitz to stuff I have not heard like Wolfmother, Silverchair, and Clutch. And I did not know that Tom Morello, Flea, Henry Rollins had released an album, great stuff. I have been listening to it all morning and set it in my top 25 rotation in my multi disc CD player. Thanks BoKnows, and I look forward to all the other Dental Floss I will get.

posted by Folkways at 12:52 PM on March 04

Awww, shucks. (blush) Glad to know it arrived Folkways. Enjoy!

posted by BoKnows at 02:52 PM on March 04

My copy of BoKnow's mix arrived a few days ago. Thanks, BoKnows. I am nearly ready. I have labeled the envelopes, created the cases and now just need to make dupes to put in the cases. Should be ready to go out by Monday. Sorry for the delay... especially owlhouse.

posted by scully at 10:28 AM on March 07

Thanks for the CD Folkways, got it today. Gonna pop it in tomorrow while I continue to pack up my humble abode. (So I can move into an even humbler abode.)

posted by BoKnows at 03:40 PM on March 07

Sorry for the delay... especially owlhouse No problemo, terrapin. Mine have been shipped out last week, and insh'allah, should arrive in North America within the fortnight. Anyway I'm busy trying to find an open field where I can play BoKnows's mix without upsetting the neighbours... Thanks, Dude, but IT'S FREAKIN' LOUD!

posted by owlhouse at 04:13 PM on March 07

My heart is still pumping form the BoKnow's mix :)

but IT'S FREAKIN' LOUD! My heart is still pumping form the BoKnow's mix :) Desired result achieved! (Actually I thought I took it easy on the heavy. Not one Death Metal song at all.)

posted by BoKnows at 11:27 AM on March 11

I should get mine out right at the deadline as well. Why isn't anyone posting the're playlists yet?

posted by tron7 at 11:59 AM on March 11

Why isn't anyone posting the're playlists yet? I got a couple emailed to me but I haven't had a chance to post them on the web site yet. I'm dealing with some apartment issues (hence my cd's may be a little late as well). But, keep emailing them to spofiswap2007 AT gmail DOT com. I hope to post them soon.

posted by goddam at 12:38 PM on March 11

Officially, I won't be posting my track lists until everyone has received their copy of the mix. Unofficially, I have already given this so-called secret information away here, in this thread.

posted by scully at 07:19 PM on March 11

BTW, is the Swap something that could easily be moved to the wiki rather than a blog? It seems like it would be a good use for it.

posted by scully at 07:30 PM on March 11

BTW, is the Swap something that could easily be moved to the wiki rather than a blog? You mean for track listings? I don't see why not. We still have the links to the first two swaps so we can even post those as well.

posted by goddam at 10:17 PM on March 11

Well, I was envisaging creating an article for each swap, but even a place to publish the track lists would be nice. People could self-publish.
