Not meaning to step on any one's toes here, just thought that while I have the time I would offer to finish what Sammy started last November. I'll gladly collect the names and address of all interested spofits have them tossed into a random numbers generator and compile a list of groups between 4 or 5 members and send the lists out. I for one (and I believe there are others) have already burned 5 discs to be sent. If this is cool with everyone else lets set a date for all names to be in and a due date for having the discs sent. If memory serves me correctly, Goddam you may know Sammy and if so do you have or can you get the user name and password for the original 07 email list? Or would it be better to start from scratch? Loved the music I received last year, everything from Hip Hop (which I had not listened to prior to getting the disc) to the great cover tunes. Looking forward to hearing from all interested parties. Y'all come back now, ya hear!

I kind of blew it last fall, had some important things going on. If you're firing this thing back up, folkie, and I can still get in, I'd love to be a part. If not, I can wait till next time.

Yeah, I have the login info for the email list. I'll dig that up and email it to you. Thanks for resurrecting this.

Tahoemoj, http://spofiswap2007.blogspot.com/ is where you can sign up. If there are any others that didn't sign up last November and would like to now go right ahead. Heck the more the mary-er, the wind cries mary and I aint touching that one. Thanks in advance Goddam for digging out that password. Should make getting this going much faster.

After thinking about it I believe the best way to do this is to scrap the November sign up all together (since I would need to verify that those who signed up then are still interested) and start anew. So if you are interested in participating in Spofi CD Swap 2008 here we go. Please send: Your name (including spofi nic) Mailing address and email addy to CDswap2008@gmail.com I will set the groups and email everyone on Monday February 25th (is this too soon?). Anyone wishing to join after that will need to find a group that will let them join in. Just for shits-n-kicks I have a little surprise planed for this years swap. Details later. cjets, send info to new email please

e-mail sent, as well. I have a little surprise, too. If any of you smart-ass Canadiens sends me Nickelback, I'll road trip north armed to the teeth. Seriously, I know the acid rain was bad, we're sorry about that. Call them off, please!!

posted by Folkways at 09:24 PM on February 17, 2008

I'm in again; also, as I hear there's a Nickelback shortage in the Third World, I'd happily sacrifice all the Nickelback you might be thinking about sending me to the less fortunate out there who really, really need crappy melodies, high school instrumental ability, and a voice only a mother could love. If Nickelback's plane fell out of the sky and landed on The Goo Goo Dolls' tour bus, then the whole flaming mess rolled down a hill and crushed Daughtry, I'd be okay with that.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 11:41 AM on February 18, 2008

also, as I hear there's a Nickelback shortage in the Third World OK, picture this. Youngsters in third world countries walking around with Nickelback CD's while wearing "perfect 19-0 Patriots" t-shirts. No wonder people hate the US.

I hope all of you participating enjoy the results and I appreciate the past CDs sent my way. I won't be joining in any more, though, and it's not just a crazed fear of 74 minutes of Nickelback or Hannah Montana, as bad as that might be. No, my problem (and it is my problem, not yours) is that my musical taste got pretty much set in stone in high school and so most of the selections on the swap CDs are just angry noise for me. Heck, I have a tough time using up iTunes gift certificates because, well, there are only so many Springsteen, Zeppelin, Beatles, U2, Allmans and the like to buy and I'm not interested in the 97th repackaging of tunes with one whole bonus track. Woo-f'ing-hoo. There are tunes I can't find there (only three or four from Blind Faith, for instance) but that's not what seems to show up on SpoFi swaps either. So you young'uns enjoy yourselves and meanwhile, keep the frack off my front lawn!

posted by billsaysthis at 07:49 PM on February 18, 2008

I'm in again. I take your point, Bill, but I managed to get some good stuff last time, and a number of the tunes made me do some more research and subsequent buying - in my case The Hold Steady and Band of Horses, who I'd heard of, but down here hadn't been exposed to. And Dad certainly went up in the estimation of his 16 y.o. daughter. My CDs tend to be a real mix of older/obscure, unusual covers and newer material, which I trust you North Americans haven't heard before. I also make them up not knowing the demographic of the intended audience but hoping that two or three tracks might hit the mark. Judging by what I got in return, I suspect that in two cases last time, my CDs are being used as drink coasters (you know who you are) but with the other two, my choices might still get some time on the iPod.

Folkways, I'll be in Ft Wallton the first week of April for High School baseball games. Still up for a game and drinks? How far is that from Florabama?

posted by louisville_slugger at 05:07 AM on February 19, 2008

If you're in my hometown of Fort Walton Beach, you're not far from the Florabama, my friend. If I hadn't gotten a new tenant last month, I'd have let you crash at my house in FWB. Maybe she wouldn't mind if you pitched a tent in the backyard.

I completely understand Bill, and I too have my musical taste based in late 60's early 70's rock. What has passed as rock since then is a farce. Having said that I also have a love of music that compels me to want to hear what others are listening to just in case I might be missing something. Last year I got a couple of CD's that were totally awesome and one of them was full of stuff I had not heard. Just for that I think these swaps are an excellent idea. Its worth it to me to filter threw the trash just to find that one diamond I may have missed. Thanks to all who have signed up again. I'm looking forward to getting my new cd's. PS Bill if you happen in here again feel free to email me anything you are looking for. As a collector I may have some things you are looking for. Such as German only releases of Deep Purple, Allman Brothers and (yea I know) The Scorpions, as well as obscure releases of Jethro Tull and The Who.

Folkways, you might enjoy Pandora. You enter an artist that you like, and it will play only music by artists it considers like the original. For example, I keep mine on Billy Joel most of the time at work. It will play Elton John, Springsteen, Beatles, etc, and will run as long as you like. Awesome.

What has passed as rock since then is a farce. Grampa Simpson: "I used to be 'with it', but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't 'it', and what's 'it' seems weird and scary." That's the sound of getting old, guys. At the risk of self-linking, let me also suggest MusicIP Mixer as a fun music discovery tool. Though it works from music you already have, it makes some interesting leaps.

There is a comic by the name of Nick Swardson who did a routine related to this. His joke was based on the concept of people listening to the music of their generation. It's a pretty funny mental picture when considering that the current young 'ens could very well be listening to Dr. Dre and 50 cent at the age of 80. What will the grandkids think? "You're Grandma was a ho!" he said. I'm sure my inability to recreate a joke is evident, but if you come across his routine, check it out.

Thanks Hawkguy and yerfatma, both sites seem really um groovy. Listening to Pandora now and will play with MusicIP Mixer in a bit. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy music of all kinds and across the ages. I just don't think what has been called Rock since the early 80's fits the original definition(with the exception of a few bands). I could be wrong that's cool, just my own perception.

Started with Jethro Tull, and left it there because the other artists they played were great. louisville_slugger, Are you playing or spectating? TBH may be able to suggest something the in Fort Walton or there is a great Irish pub and restaurant called McGuire's here in Pensacola who knows if we go there we might be able to talk justgary into joining us. Fact is I don't hit the Florbama very often anymore. Generally just go to the Mullet Toss weekend. Of course if you want to hit a truly southern redneck hole in the wall bar then the Florabama is the spot. Email is in my profile lets move this conversation there :)

I liked the Paul Kelly and Hunters and Collectors tunes the best.

Update: So far we have 15 swappers. Not too bad. I have heard from all the November signees but MrFrisby and Terrapin. My question is as a group consensus should we consider them as still in the swap or not? I hate to leave anyone out just because they my be elsewhere this week. Also a couple of members have expressed concern about the shipment deadline needing at least 2 weeks. I had already thought that 3 weeks would be cool seeing as it took that long last time for some to ship their wears. If anyone does not ship to their group you will have the wrath of CHMN DINGLE and the ghost of Barbaro come down upon your head!

On that note, time to contact HP help. I went to burn discs last night off of iTunes, and my iTunes told me that disc burning software isn't available (yes, I have it.) Anyone have this happen to them before? Any advice from any of you who are obviously more techie-inclined than me?

Thus the fun of the mullet toss. Nothin' better than taking a dead mullet and tossing it from 'Bama to Florida. Home page is FloraBama.com

obscure releases of...The Who. Folkways, I smell a separate swap if you're game. I've got plenty of bootlegs, er, live recordings of The Who if you're interested. Also, my musical taste began in the sixties, as did most of yours but if you can't move past that, you're missing some truly seminal work (Punk and Alternative - and those are genres, Grandma and Grandpa, not bands).

Oh don't get me wrong, I love most Punk and Alternative stuff I've come over the years. Having both a 20yr old and a 17 yr old I have been constantly introduced to new stuff. Ever go on a trip with the kids and try to make the listen to your music? I have learned from my 17yr old that AC/DC is THE SHIT and has requested copies of all my CD's As for another swap I'm down with that after this one is finished. Keep in mind the CD's I have are copies of vinyl 33 1/3 LP's so you get to hear all the little pops that go with the original vinyl.

I'll be posting the groups in a new thread Monday morning seeing as I kinda set that as the deadline to sign up. Still have not heard from MrFrisby or terrapin from the November list if anyone knows whats up let me know. That said, the deadline for shipment is Friday March 14. All who have not shipped out their CD's by midnight on the 14th shall have their nails manicured by Barbaro's now unemployed farrier!

Great show from what I remember (My memory's a little faulty due to some bad quaaludes I bought from some kid on the subway). Ah, to be young and stupid in NYC

OK, stakes are raised. I saw AC/DC in 1975 at the Hornsby Police Boys Club (in Sydney, Australia). They were the support act at an all ages gig. Local boy Bon Scott used to be the cleaner at Warrawee Public School.

No fair owlhouse, you're an Australian. Did you ever see Radio Birdman? Or were they unknown even there? The only cool story that I have like that is when I saw Nirvana in '89 when they opened for the Flaming Lips. This was at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. I saw lots of other great unknown acts in Detroit, East Lansing and Mt. Pleasant, but I believe that only Nirvana made it to arena rock levels of popularity.

posted by NoMich at 08:41 AM on February 22, 2008

I saw AC/DC on the For Those About to Rock tour, I believe at the Municipal Auditorium in Mobile, AL, some time around 1982. They brought their own Howitzers with 'em, I was stoned for a week from the ambient pot smoke, and I couldn't hear for three days afterwards. All in all, a successful concert.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 09:19 AM on February 22, 2008

I believe it was 1988, but it could have been 89, but I saw Pearl Jam in a free concert on the Hill here in Lawrence, Kansas. It was the same year I saw Monsters of Rock at Arrowhead. Monsters of Rock had Crue, Guns and Roses, and many other greats. I'll probably catch hell for saying this, but Monsters of Rock was the second best concert I ever attended. Second only to Billy Joel/Elton John at Kemper. That, my friends, was amazing.

posted by hawkguy at 09:56 AM on February 22, 2008

I saw AC/DC in 1975 I will see your AC/DC in 1975 and raise you Aerosmith opening up for Thin Lizzy in 1975 at the Boutwell Auditorium in Birmingham. As for the bands I saw for free in college R.E.M. and The Black Crows are the only ones to have any commercial success. Best show I've attended so far has to be Jethro Tull on the campus of UNO.

posted by owlhouse at 09:13 PM on February 24, 2008
