I'll admit it. I've waited for about a week or two to post this.

At least you didn't create the landmark account yourself—or even worse, get it wrong. At least, I think that's how it happened. My memory is fading in my old age.

And only 1000 of those are banned.

bah, obviously, switch user:after. Thanks.

Those old users are dyslexic. All the bugs were worked out a little after 700.

I'll take the over, and I'm guessing it happens four minutes into the second quarter.

I call for dfleming's banning in light of these revelations and as a celebration of member growth. Which I like to celebrate in my own special way.

16,000. Pfft. Everyone knows that this site peaked at 2000. And, yes, I'm being generous. And I still hold true that as it has been foretold: The righteous, the true, the Church of the First 2000 Members, shall cleave the Holy Filter in twain, and form a new Holy and Epistolic Church under the One Cadenhead, now as it ever shall be. And lo, their jackets will be way cool.

I'm proud to be #680, which also happens to be both my combined SAT score and the number of pieces of salmon sashimi I can eat in one sitting. Good Lord, I've written 49 columns?

Don't make me repost BullpenPro's -- er, I mean Crafty Sousepaw's -- rant about the worthiness of all four-figure SpoFites. Easily my favorite locker room post of all time. It's no coincidence that it came from a member of the legendary 3K cohort.

The legendary 3k cohort?

Welcome aboard, Chipster, and don't let this bunch of digitally deprived snobs get to you. They think they are special because they signed on early. Don't drink the kool-aid, Chip. Start posting, ranting, contributing, discussing, etc. We are looking forward to the first time you are told to "look at the guidelines, dummy". 16K won't even half fill Fenway Park. When are we going to hit a real number? Seriously, thanks to all the 3- and 4-digit midgets who have made SpoFi into the first place I go from the home page. "I love this game!"

posted by Howard_T at 01:44 PM on February 14, 2007

Howard, you fair-weather fan...SpoFi is my homepage!

(In best Nelson from the Simpson's voice) Hah, Hah. Venice said "BullpenPro!"

Howard, you fair-weather fan...SpoFi is my homepage! Alas, when I get on to the lan at work, our corporate internal home page is the first thing I see. I've talked to HR about changing it, but they said something about termination. Let 'em try; I'm old enough to have retired last year.

For bannable peeps who just want to post their own crap, the wondrous PopeCaden has delivered a new vehicle to which these ignorants can be foisted: karmawhore.com. Thanks be to PopeCaden!

I'd like to announce the birth of a new blog being housed by one of the aforementioned new vehicles: Behold The Ad Whisperers! Stop by and rip an ad you hate, pimp one you love or just make a snide comment.

Thanks fraze, it's nice to know I wasn't the only one wondering why "Blister in the Sun" would make someone hungry. Now why can't I get just one burger?

Thanks fraze, it's nice to know I wasn't the only one wondering why "Blister in the Sun" would make someone hungry. Now why can't I get just one burger? It's just that mushroom-cheese sauce goes so well with the classic songs of our youth.

I figured is was due to being high as a kite, but I could be wrong.

posted by Ufez Jones at 10:18 PM on February 15, 2007

Sweet blog, Frazer. I was wondering if I knew the newspaper person who started it. Google won't take my ads for karmawhore.com. They think it's some kind of sexual reference.

posted by rcade at 12:00 AM on February 16, 2007

I've never seen a closed thread on SpoFi, but good on the admins. That was a train wreck, and not a good example for our new 16Kers.

posted by dusted at 01:29 AM on February 16, 2007

It's just that mushroom-cheese sauce goes so well with the classic songs of our youth. Exactly, Weedy... I used to love Wendy's mushroom melt burger but combining that song, it's obvious meaning, and a creamy, gooey, cheesy sandwich just doesn't really seem all that appealing.

posted by SummersEve at 05:17 AM on February 16, 2007

Even worse was when Burger King used Barry White to whore out their quasi-food. Fucking sacrilege, it is, every bit as bad as those assholes at Jaguar using the Clash's "London Calling" (one of the best protest songs ever, IMHO) without a hint of irony.

And Reagan co-opting Born in the USA... seriously, McDonald's should have jumped on this first: Big Mac you know you're the one The special sauce possibilities are endless.

Okay, brainiacs and net nerds -- how do I drive people to the blog? I have no idea how that works. Can I register somewhere? Is there somewhere to post links to it that will help? Stand on the roof of the mall with my pants down and shout to the world? Wait, no to the last one -- I've already been cited for that.

posted by wfrazerjr at 09:40 AM on February 16, 2007

technocrati is a great place to start, fraze. commenting on like minded blogs is another good way to drive traffic. of course, this is the weak advice of an amateur, so hopefully others will offer some advice as well.

posted by garfield at 09:52 AM on February 16, 2007

Signed up for Technocrati, garf, thanks. Also trying to add Google Analytics, but putting in the html code makes no sense to me. I need a tutor! Willing to trade autographed stuff!

posted by wfrazerjr at 03:58 PM on February 16, 2007

What garfield said plus: regularly updated content. If you update often, people will have more incentive to visit more frequently, thereby driving traffic up. What you get out of it depends on how much effort you put into it.

posted by mkn at 04:18 PM on February 16, 2007

Would it be impolitic to mention I am taking the plunge here as well? I'll give Technorati a shot too. Feel free to heckle away.

posted by yerfatma at 09:36 AM on February 17, 2007

I'd just like to get people coming to it occasionally. That would be spiffy. Rogers, is there a way to jazz up the page, or do I need to be all HTML proficient for that? And should we all start linking to one another?

posted by wfrazerjr at 12:42 PM on February 17, 2007

I took the plunge myself last week. It's mostly for my own amusement but you all are welcome to stop by and comment, critique or snark. I already have links to the Spofi member blogs that I knew of.

posted by MrFrisby at 06:49 PM on February 17, 2007
