SpoFi Bowl Game Pick'em: You picked it, now show it!

Bowl season is upon us! Good luck and hopefully you pick pretty good.

My mighty Chimps put a hurtin' on Middle Tennessee last night. I now have a whopping 30 points in the pick 'em.

posted by NoMich at 01:44 PM on December 27, 2006

That's 30 more points than I got. That's what I get for thinking that losing a coach matters!

Good thing this wasn't a confidence pool. Only three people have picked both bowl games so far right. As for losing Brian Kelly, well, teams seem to flourish even after he leaves. GVSU, his job before CMU, has won two out of three Division 2 National Championships since he left. I was hoping he'd get/take the MSU job and make that program something decent.

I meant, Good thing this wasn't a suicide pool. It's too early to be awake.

Oh-fer-two! I better start clearing space on the cyber-mantle for my next Costanza...

FSU, having a dreadful year in the ACC, just made the PAC 10 look absolutely ridiculous. UCLA let that win over USC get to their heads. They were strutting their stuff in the first quarter, and by the fourth they looked like a deer in headlights.

posted by wingnut4life at 08:45 AM on December 28, 2006

See, I thought it was going to be the other way around...FSU, coming off the loss to Florida, where they failed to prevent UF from going to the National Championship game, and UCLA, coming off the win over USC, and (possibly) preventing the Trojans from going to said game. I really expected FSU to be down and UCLA to be up for this game. Shows how much I know.

TBH I had that same idea going into that game. I guess neither of us know much.

I'd like to give props to Grum and tselson. Grum hasn't picked a game right and tselson had picked 'em all right to this point.

Is Fox marking Alabama as the winner of the Independence Bowl? I though OK State won the game.

posted by NoMich at 07:50 AM on December 29, 2006

Yeah, that'll shake up the standings once it gets fixed.

posted by apoch at 07:53 AM on December 29, 2006

Alabama covered the spread, -3.5. OSU actually won the game, but only by 3. You're picking against the spread in this pool, not the actual winner in every case.

posted by louisville_slugger at 08:11 AM on December 29, 2006

SCORING For each bowl game, points will be earned based on whether you select the winner of the game against the spread, and what confidence point value you’ve assigned to that game. Points for a bowl game are only earned if you select the winner of the game. When applying the spread, the winning pick is the team that has the most points after applying the spread. In some cases this will mean the winning pick is not the team that wins the game. The spread value is subtracted from the points scored by the Favorite team. That value is compared to the points scored by the underdog to determine the winner. In the event a bowl game is cancelled, no points will be awarded for that game. There are two forms of points in this Contest: Correct Pick Points. Points are earned by correctly selecting the winner of the game against the spread. Correct selections earn five (5) points per bowl game for the twenty (20) non-Bowl Championship Series Bowl games and fifteen (15) points per BCS bowl game. The BCS bowl games include the following bowls: Rose Tostitos Fiesta FedEx Orange Allstate Sugar BCS Championship Game Confidence Points. Before the bowl game begins you have the option of applying a confidence value between 1 and 25 to each bowl game. Individual confidence values may not be applied to more than one bowl game. For example, if you are most confident in the outcome of the Rose bowl you would want to apply 25 points to this bowl game. If you select the outcome of the Rose bowl correctly you will earn 25 points. Confidence points are only earned if you select the outcome of the bowl correctly.

Thanks for the props apoch, here's a toot for sdm, nicely done! I must note that I have the most remaining confidence points left. They were given to me and I wanted to keep them for as long as possible. It will be painful for me to watch them disappear. apoch, I think you have the proverbial birds in the hand and I(we) have some birds in the bush. Nicely done as well.

Grum, I have to hand it to you. When you set your mind on winning another Costanza, you pull out all of the stops. Eventually, I'll have to get one correct. To pick 25 games incorrectly, and assuming the spread given makes each game as close to a 50/50 proposition as you can get, it would happen once out of 33,554,432 times (assuming random guesses). If I pull that off, I want more than a simple Costanza plaque for my user page...I want the award to be renamed the "Grum"!

skydivemom, thank you for clarifying that. I was going to, but you beat me to the punch. You are awesome!

skydivemom, you've got the best pick percentage with 9 out of ten games correct and the second higest confidence points remaining. I played with some numbers to see if I could make any predictions about the outcome. (Correct Pick percentage * CPR)+Current Points. The top four are skydivemom (335.6), tselson (301), Soul on a Roll (291.8), and Folkways (251.7). skydivemom and tselson have the most CPR left and Soul on a Roll and Folkways currenlty have the most points. It's a battle against future potential and past performance. This doesn't take into account the five extra points you get for every right pick or the 15 extra you get for the five BCS bowls. You can view a spreadsheet here.

posted by apoch at 08:31 AM on December 30, 2006

i've got 6 right, not 4. shouldnt my % right be 60 instead of 40?.....if you're talking about the first 10 games

Wow, the Navy-BC ending was the greatest! I love last second game winners after a fumble recovery. Nave looks so crushed right now.

posted by louisville_slugger at 06:44 AM on January 03, 2007

OK...I see how it is. I move into first and the damn thread just dies. Well let me be the first to congradulate myself. Don't worry, I'm sure my reign will be over after 1 more game. Then again...could I possibly run the table and take it to the house? Nah. Probably not.

posted by louisville_slugger at 10:20 AM on January 05, 2007

Congrats. Well, if you run the table your max score is 301. Which is higher than (my probably flawed) predicted point equation spits out for anyone else. Of course one of the flaws is that the prediction equation doesn't factor in the 25 remaining bonus points.

posted by apoch at 11:11 AM on January 05, 2007

Bubba and skydivemom have all 3 opposite picks from mine. You and I share Fla as the only common pick. If I lose 1, I think i'm done.

posted by louisville_slugger at 11:36 AM on January 05, 2007

Perhaps. A lot depends on how everyone divided up their confidence points. Of course, ever since I ran the numbers, skydivemom has been on top of the predicted points standings. So we'll have to see how everything shakes out. There has a been a ton of movement in this thing.

OSU Wins - Skydivemom is our champion (by quite a margin) Florida Wins - louisville_slugger wins with 292 points, to my 291. I don't know whether to root for Florida and a second place victory or Skydivemom so I can say I predicted it.
