Funky Stats Fantasy Baseball?:
I was noticing that there are some pretty obscure stats that could be used to set up a 5x5 (or whatever XxX desired) that would have nothing like home runs but rather outfield assists, sacrifices, balks and other offbeat stats to play.

Anyone interested?

Heck yes. But is it too late to start a league?

Here are some stats I'd like to see used: * Bunt RBIs, cause they're the most spectacular play in baseball, especially if the runner or batter is a pitcher * For catchers, successful outs after having been barrelled down by the runner * And of course, hit by pitch.

Sounds kinky. Count me in. For catchers, successful outs after having been barrelled down by the runner And don't forget percentage of runners thrown out and foul ball putouts!

But is it too late to start a league? yahoo leagues have half-season options. How about: - intentional walks - wild pitches for pitchers/passed balls for catchers - defensive indifference (it would be a stolen base, but for defensive indifference) - errors

I'm down. I like the strange and unusual, but this because I myself am strang and unusual.

Other suggestions: - outfielder double-plays (fly ball out and then gunning out a runner) - catcher double-plays (strike'em out, throw'em out kinds) - batting average for balls in play = (hits - HR)/(AB) (for hitters OR pitchers) - hit by pitch

Someone should be on "Who (Or What) Has Greg Maddux Beaten To A Pulp Today?" duty.

Batters: Hit by pitch (Biggio anyone?), GIDP (shame Marquis Grissom retired), Errors, Sacrifice Flys and At Bats (but Putouts might be cooler) Pitchers: Outs, Wild Pitches (no more Ankiel makes this a tough one), Balks, Save Chances and Hit Batters (though Holds or Total Bases Allowed might be fun too). The league's go up to 12 teams so let's get 'er going once we've arrived at a consensus of stats to use.

I wouldn't mind playing. It would be interesting to see who would be the best players with these more obscure stats.

These are my favourites: Games Started (GS) Triples (3B) Sacrifice Hits (SH) Caught Stealing (CS) Hit By Pitch (HBP) Ground Into Double Play (GIDP) Putouts (PO) Outs (OUT) Runs (R) Hit Batters (HBP) Wild Pitches (WP) Balks (BLK) Stolen Bases Allowed (SB) Batters Grounded Into Double Plays (GIDP) Holds (HLD) Total Bases Allowed (TB)

I think Yahoo! will not let you count a stat the "wrong" way. For example, you could win the Caught Stealing category by having only guys who never attempt to steal a base on your team.

I'm in. What about quality starts for a pitcher, also? How about a smashed-into-unpadded-post-and-crack-your-face-open-but-made-the-out? Or maybe a snapped-your-wrist-but-still-made-the-throw?

Catcher's interference?

posted by ajaffe at 10:28 PM on May 25, 2006

Okay, so far its a 6x6 with the stats being: Batters: Games Started, Triples, Sacrifice Flys, Hit by Pitch, Ground into Double Play and Putouts. Pitchers: Total Batters Faced, Home Runs, Hit Batters, Balks, Holds and Total Bases Allowed. Sound good? I'll finalize the league and post the link and password, first 11 other teams to get in are in.

Damn, I did want errors in there. 7x7 with Stolen Bases Allowed too?
