The Percentage figure is the percentage of points that that team's been given by us SpoFites. According to the SpoFi collective so far, Canada and the Czech Republic are the favourites, with Canada holding a slight edge. Also in medal contention are Finland (even with the goaltending question mark?), Russia (even with Pavel Bure as GM?), Sweden (even with another goaltending question mark?), and the USA (even with Chris Chelios?). Slovakia, Germany, and Switzerland are seen as the outside threats, and the bottom is rounded out by Latvia, Kazakhstan, and Italy.

I can't speak for everyone here, but I categorically deny seeing Slovakia, Germany and Switzerland as outside threats.

goddam: No medal for Canada? That's a ballsy pick and if you are right then you probably win this pool in a laugher. I'd be curious to see the nationality breakdown on these picks as well. How did Canadians rank Canada? How did Americans rank the USA? Vice versa. Or Europeans rank the N.American teams?

posted by grum@work at 06:52 PM on February 13, 2006

Well I am American and I put Canada with the gold and no medal for USA.

posted by skydivemom at 07:54 PM on February 13, 2006

skydivemom, I have to say, that's very Canadian of you (in that you don't think much of your own country's chances). And Weedy speaks for me as well as himself. (I'd give Slovakia a 1% chance at most of getting a medal, and Germany and Switzerland 0.001%, which merely factors in the possibility of a mass food poisoning epidemic affecting all the other teams next week.)

can't speak for everyone here, but I categorically deny seeing Slovakia, Germany and Switzerland as outside threats. I can understand Germany (especially without Sturm and Hecht) and Switzerland (despite alright goaltending), but the Slovaks are a very good team and are not to be taken lightly. Only weakness is their goaltending. This is precisely why I favoured teams in Group A in my picks -- Group B is anything goes.

goddam: No medal for Canada? I know goddam answered that he is, indeed, not picking Canada for a medal, but ultimately the rankings don't have to match up with the medal standings to maximize points, if I'm not mistaken. For instance, Canada could just sneak into the quarterfinals as the final qualifier in its group and then run the table in the knockout round to win the gold but end up with ultimately fewer points than a team that runs the table in the group phase but then loses in the gold medal game. Is that right? Or is my understanding of the scoring off?

posted by holden at 02:05 PM on February 14, 2006

You're right on almost all counts, holden. Since we're putting equal emphasis on pool play games, the gold medal game is just another game—so just an extra 12 points if your top pick wins it all. In fact, you're only wrong about goddam's gender. :) Although in the scenario you described, if Canada "sneaks in" to the medal round, goddam would still get a good chunk of points—assuming her top-picked teams were dominant in pool play instead of Canada like the rest of us picked. So yeah, you're not just picking medal results, but overall dominance.

posted by DrJohnEvans at 02:10 PM on February 14, 2006

Hilarious on the goddam gender thing. Shows you what I know (and also how well I check in on users' profiles) and also shows a little bit about our/my biases when encountering others talking about sports. Sorry goddam.

posted by holden at 02:14 PM on February 14, 2006

I just crunched some theoretical numbers. If there are no significant upsets in pool play, there will only be 19 points separating our top score from the bottom score as we head into the quarterfinals. This is gonna be pretty competitive.

posted by DrJohnEvans at 02:32 PM on February 14, 2006

Only 19 points between 30 picks, that does sound competitive. I just hope USA makes it there on time. I have them ranked pretty high.

Those two goals by Italy were actually pretty sweet. Good job on them for giving their homeland fans something to cheer for. As much as I wanted Canada to win that game, I was happier that Italy kept it close for 20 minutes, tied the game and had the fans rocking in the stands. I've got Italy picked last, but I'd be happy if they somehow got a win off one of the other teams this tournament. The only question I have is: how come Roberto Luongo didn't start against Italy? You'd think THAT would have made the fans a bit happy. (he is of Italian heritage, right?)

posted by grum@work at 08:59 AM on February 15, 2006

I have to say, Italy did not look half as bad as I expected. They may be able to pull off a surprise in pool play. grum: yes, Luongo is of Italian heritage. I read somewhere that he speaks Italian at home. Also, I noticed this morning that my three last picks are all from the same pool, which is illogical and dumb. That'll teach me to do this in 1 minute. Dear Dr, how about using an average instead of percentage in the summary row? Then we could follow the SpoFi collective's results.

posted by qbert72 at 09:07 AM on February 15, 2006

Roberto's brothers were at a game earlier this year in Montreal, and they were going on about the pasta dinner they had before the game. Definitely Italian.

Sens deforwardenseman Christoph Schubert has five SOG against the Czechs. Some things never change. From The Spin: Brodeur allowed two goals on 20 shots in the Team Canada victory, one on a deflection by Jason Cirone, the other on a low shot by John Parco off a turnover by Bryan McCabe. a turnover by Bryan McCabe I wouldn't have called it a turnover. It was a high dump-in over McCabe's head, he batted it down with his stick, and it bounced to an Italian attacker, which lead to a 2-on-1, with McCabe the last defender. Still a dumb move to go for a high puck with your stick, but it's not like he had control of the puck and gave it away.

Ha, actually, NoMich, I took the easy way out—the idea of transferring an Excel spreadsheet to an XHTML table more than once a week scared me, so I threw everything into a quick-and-dirty database, added some magical PHP, and poof! A leaderboard. Now all I have to do is update the DB directly for the rest of the tourney (takes less than a minute), and everything else is done automatically.

Yes, very nice table. Thanks again DrJ for taking this and running with it. I really like the flag headers. I know Excel & CAD but that's it. I used to know BASIC back when I had a TRS-180 ccII. I could have kept track of the points but had no clue how to post it. As cool as the Castanza award is, I don't want it. I am used to not being the best, but I can't handle being last.

posted by njsk8r20 at 01:48 PM on February 15, 2006

I ranked the Slovaks ahead of the Americans. Mainly because of Chara. And Gaborik. And Hossa. (And the other Hossa.) And Zednik. And Satan. And Bondra. And Meszaros. Most of those players are pretty streaky, though. But while a number of them have been having off years, if they even start to get going... yikes!

posted by DrJohnEvans at 01:48 PM on February 15, 2006

qbert You've got them in the right spot. Slovakia will need all of its offensive firepower to mask a physically deficient corps of defensemen and sub-standard goaltending. Chara is the only blueliner that will provoke fear in opposing forwards intent on crashing the Slovak net, which will be guarded by a trio of netminders will little big-game experience. Jan Lasak, formerly with the Nashville Predators, could not cut it in the NHL and returned to Europe before the lockout. Peter Budaj had a decent run with the Colorado Avalanche, but has spent much of the year in the minors. Karol Krizan, a 25-year-old, has spent his whole career in Europe, starring for three years in the Slovak first division before moving to Sweden this year.

posted by skydivedad at 02:02 PM on February 15, 2006

I have no illusions that Slovakia will medal—obviously they don't have either the defensive depth or goaltending. But they should be guaranteed two wins (over LAT and KAZ), and I think their game against the U.S. is a toss-up. So I picked the SpoFi underdog to come away with the three victories in Pool B. Three or more! They just tied up against Russia. Visnovsky.

It's a damn good game right now. Budaj's been good, but I don't think he'll be able to carry the Slovaks past the top tier teams. Especially in the Group of Death that is Group B. The Russians aren't using Nabokov now anyway, who is arguably the better goaltender of the two. (maybe I spoke too soon, they just tied it!)

Irbe is older than dirt. He might be able to suck it up for the tournament, and maybe even become a viable second option for a low-seed team, but his best years were a decade ago. You could almost say the same for Hasek, actually. And if he can't go, having Tomas Vokoun as your second goalie is not exactly a drop in quality. The Czechs will be fine.

They are constantly going after the puck and finding themselves out of position, but it's working here and there. chico: are you forgetting the job that Irbe did on your Leafs in 2002? SDD, it's a hamstring problem, and they're still determining his availability for the rest of this tournament, let alone the NHL season. [...] Hasek ... will undergo an MRI exam Thursday in the Olympic Village to determine whether his hamstring is torn. Hasek doesn’t know how long he will be sidelined in a tournament that has the Czechs playing four more times in the next week. (also the paraphrased CBC story which will not require registration)

It may just be a case of good goalies (Irbe, Aebischer) stealing games for the minnows, but someone has to score the goals, and 60 minutes is a long time.

posted by grum@work at 12:30 PM on February 16, 2006

This is why I like giving all games the same weight. The Czech loss means that even if they win all of their remaining games including the gold medal, anybody who gave them 12 points will still have to depend on their lower picks in order to win. It gives each game that much more significance. I'm sure there's a good story behind it, grum. Maybe after the Slovaks freed themselves from the bonds of tyranny, their leader wiped his mouth on the Russian flag in a symbol of proud defiance. He was eating a hot dog. It's mustard.

There is no official symbolism for the colors of the Slovakian flag. The colors were originally influenced by the flag of the Netherlands created in the 1500s. A number of Slavic nations have apparently taken on variations of this design. According to law, the height of the shield on the flag (the State Coat of Arms, by the way) should be equal to half the width of the flag. The Internets told me so.

The Swedes are collapsing really well around their goalie. The Americans keep making those dangerous plays in their defensive zone, as if they did not fear the Swedes enough.

What a story. That is an incredible upset. The biggest since Sweden's men's team lost to Belarus. Unbelievable. Kim Martin is your new Swedish stamp. From what I watched during lunch the Americans were dominant - just couldn't beat Martin. Crazy. It is too bad we won't get to see another Canada vs. US barnburner - but it's going to be a holiday in Sweden today.

isn't that the first US loss ever (in a tournament, friendly, whatever) to a team other than canada? The CBC commentators were saying that it would be the first time the American women did not make the finals in an international tournament, so it looks like it, yes. Interview with the Swedish goalie on CBC: she's just a kid! I think she's 19, but she looks five years younger. She thanks her teammates, is overjoyed, history for Swedish hockey, the usual stuff. Note to self: working at home while watching the Olympics is not productive.
