EPL Fantasy League Week 25: Well, looks like Chelsea have the Premiership all wrapped up already, but our league is still fairly competitive with anyone from the top ten still in with a shout of winning the league.

Right now, my money's on squealy. That's a fine squad of players you've got there. Maybe it's time for me to go for broke and get a decent squad of 11 players and complete muppets on the bench. Oh wait, that's already being tried at the villa. Sigh.

posted by BigCalm at 06:36 AM on February 03, 2005

my team is very similar to squealys team with the difference between us essentially Henry+Defoe (him) vs Hasselbaink+Dickov. my chances don't look so good now.

posted by gspm at 06:58 AM on February 03, 2005

Well my money's on anyone apart from me. Are you guys trying to jinx me or what? Bastards!

squealy, whatcha gonna do about Robben? Get Giggsy?

posted by garfield at 08:58 AM on February 03, 2005

apparently, i need to get game tape of the AR vs MU game.

How long is Robben out for?

posted by salmacis at 12:21 PM on February 03, 2005

C'mon garfy. Do you think I'm gonna give my gameplan away that easily? You ain't even got Robben in your squad anyway so you should just be smiling serenely or maybe sniggering a little behind your hand. How long he's out for is anyone's guess. As I understand it the Chelsea medical staff reckon it might not be as serious as first thought. He'll be having a scan when the swelling goes down, though that may not be before the next game. Decisions, decisions.

posted by squealy at 12:49 PM on February 03, 2005

i saw some torrents around for the aresenal-ManU game if you have an extra gig of hard drive space to spare. why is it all Robben vs Carling Cup when that is on Feb 27th? What about the next game? I think a comment about that is of more interest. managers. sheesh.

posted by gspm at 01:28 PM on February 03, 2005

gspm, point me in the right direction. I'll download it tonight while I drink away the sorrow of a cancelled NHL season.

posted by garfield at 01:48 PM on February 03, 2005

The game is also being replayed several times on FoxSportsWorld if that's easier.

posted by billsaysthis at 02:45 PM on February 03, 2005

If Robben is out for any significant about of time, Chelsea are fucked.

posted by StarFucker at 02:53 PM on February 03, 2005

Well they're 11 points clear with 2/3 of the season gone. Robben didn't appear until after they'd played 12 EPL and Champs League games and during his absence their record was: W9 D2 L1 If that's your definition of fucked then I'd hate to hear how you'd describe West Brom.

I'm done, I think. I've been away for the last couple of weeks, and wasn't following, so... top 3 is my goal...

posted by sauril at 05:20 PM on February 03, 2005

I just looked at the link you posted garfield. Nice one. wc2002, it looks like the title is yours seeing as the top three have now conceded defeat. Well done.

posted by squealy at 06:03 PM on February 03, 2005

Hmm. If I sell Robben now I only get 9.7 million for him. (You only get half the profit if his value rises). Then if I want to buy him back again, it costs 10.4! What the hell do I do? Gamble on him being fit quickly? Replace him with Scholes? God I love this game...

posted by salmacis at 06:56 PM on February 03, 2005

I have some dilemmas myself: I've already used my free trade for this week. I had to, so I don't regret it. But it was before the Chelsea match so now I'm really chewing my fingernails.

  • Drogba has a groin injury with no end in sight.
  • Robben is crocked probably for the next game. I'll be happy if he's a sub.
  • Kanoute is out due to his red card.
  • Mendes didn't play the last match.
I have four possible no-shows and only two viable subs. I'll be lucky if I stay in fourth this week. I do love this game!

posted by worldcup2002 at 10:45 PM on February 03, 2005

just to make you love the game more - a look at Robben's ankle was reported to be inconclusive. hmmm.

posted by gspm at 10:44 AM on February 04, 2005

Great news, I replaced Robben with Scholes and Ferguson has dropped him.

posted by squealy at 09:17 AM on February 05, 2005

I dropped Robben for Ronaldo. Cost me four points, but at least he's playing. In other news, I shoulda dropped Kanoute for Mido. The new boy has scored two in his first match, including what looks like the winner. And there's still 30 minutes left! GRAAAAARGH!

I can't believe it. I'm still in fourth. By my fingernails. We'll see what happens after tomorrow.

Scratch that Mr B. I just realised you joined after the start of the season. Good result for your tractor boys today. I imagine you'll enjoy swapping places with us next season.

wc - i think the ball is yellow, top center of the frame. but where is that guy's hand going?

posted by gspm at 09:00 AM on February 06, 2005

I was being rhetorical. And I don't really want to know where that guy's hand was either. btw, it's going to be a tough week. Looks like Man City might hold Chelsea to a draw. Good on them.

Nice to see MrPottyMouth finally topped a week though he's still barely in sight of 19th place. Not a good scoring week in general for everyone, Henry still not on his game and Lampard minimal in a 0-0. Next weekend seems to be the last EPL matches for a while, break for Champions League, Carling Cup final and such.

This is a strange week... Some teams in the FA Cup... And whats going on next week?

posted by StarFucker at 09:40 PM on February 12, 2005

SF, I told you we needed a new keeper and if I hadn't seen the England-Holland Under-21 match in mid-week I'd suggest we'll be seeing Carson getting a run out soon. But I did see that match and the two bad goals he gave up, so we're probably stuck with JD until summer. Injuries, inconsistent play and poor transfer spending have undermined a season where we might have pushed aside Arsenal for the third spot.

posted by billsaysthis at 12:58 AM on February 13, 2005

how bout some sarcastic clapping for me - transferring out a player that got 6 points this week (or some such) and replacing him with a player that doesn't have a match this week. way to examine things! so with two players on my squad this week that don't have games it will at least mean that my first bench player will get added in, good thing since he got two goals.

FA Cup replays this week - Spurs, Fulham, Charlton, Newcastle. No games for those guys this gameweek. Also, no EPL matches next weekend due to FA Cup (?)th Round matches. And this gameweek isn't over until the Soton v West Brom match on Feb 22 (two Tuesdays from now). So hold off on any cheering or commiserating until then. Ha!

posted by worldcup2002 at 11:43 PM on February 13, 2005

well, i've got three palace players playing against Arsenal at Highbury. So, i'm pulling for an Henry stinker too. otherwise Sauril may regain the lead. i can't imagine the palace players doing much for me in this matchup but arsenal hasn't been so hot so we'll see.

Hattrick Henry, please. Please.

is the carnage at highbury over yet?

posted by gspm at 04:07 PM on February 14, 2005

Aye, 5-1 - Henry, but nothing from Ljungberg, mainly because he didn't play or make the bench. Bugger.

posted by Mr Bismarck at 04:15 PM on February 14, 2005

Palace were holding off Arsenal well for the first 25-30 minutes but began retreating into a defensive shell. At that point it was the Gunners hammering on them and the CP defense just isn't that good, so three goals in quick succession and two over the second half. Henry got two goals but almost all of us have him. At least Johnson got a goal, since I have him. But hey, Lehmann's back in goal. Wenger needs to buy a new starter in the summer window.

posted by billsaysthis at 04:27 PM on February 14, 2005

When the pool leader doesn't have Henry consider yourselves to all be gaining on the leader... which can be sufficient to separate "good week" from "bad week" no matter weekly your points.

posted by gspm at 04:41 PM on February 14, 2005

no kidding. points before Henry: 33 points after Henry: 65 the leader now has Henry :P

posted by sauril at 05:13 PM on February 14, 2005
