SpoFi Yahoo Fantasy NBA post-draft trash talk. Bragging, regrets and laments - we've got it all.

Let's see: Shaq, C-Webb, Vince Carter, Nick Van Exel, Stackhouse, plus Darius Miles, Lamar Odom and others... yeah, I'm happy. I probably should have drafted another power forward, since Webber is out until mid-December, but other than that, Los Perdedores are looking good.

I started great, T-Mac, Cassell, Shareef abdul raheem, but then my screen froze and when i came back i had Raef and Keon Clark, and then for some unexplainable reason I started drafting Clippers and I just couldn't stop. btw dusted Stackhouse is hurt too he had surgery a few days ago, and Miles and Odom are royal pains in the ass, I swear they smoked blunts together last year and plotted to foil my fantasy team, and don't get me started on VC.

The fact that there are so many people playing really thinned things out. I didn't participate in the live draft, but I did pref the top 25. I'm not pissed with my team, but I'm not too hopeful. I've got some good guards (Kidd, Marbury, and Eric Snow) but I'm stuck with Divac and Greg Ostertag (the other white meat) at center. The other fantasy league I'm doing only has eight players, and it's head to head, so I'm getting the best of both worlds this year. Hopefully things will turn out okay in both, but we'll see.

Stackhouse, too? Ah man, I'm renaming my team "Hospital Ward."

posted by dusted at 01:27 AM on October 22, 2003

I should have done some homework - Caron Butler just had knee surgery, bringing the number of knee surgeries on my team to four. Los Perdedores is an apt name.

I am pretty happy with my picks, even though I got my first pick late in the draft. Took a chance on two rookies (LeBron and Dwayne Wade) and on Mourning.

posted by jasonspaceman at 06:59 AM on October 22, 2003

I have to rename my boys Team Hunch: Gilbert Arenas, Ricky Davis, Emanuel Ginobili, Drew Gooden, Elton Brand, Nene Hilario, Yao Ming, Antonio Davis, Richard Jefferson, some of these guys will really pick up their numbers this year, but will enough of them do it? samurai jackass, mbd1, and dusted have to be liking where they sit....

posted by smithers at 08:04 AM on October 22, 2003

Ricky Davis was a stud for me last year, but his numbers will go down this year as Silas rolls out the ball for King James. I finally came up with a good draft spot for the first time in about 10 or 15 yahoo drafts. I feel like I have a squad of punkass kids, but maybe it's just that the league is full of punkass kids.

posted by mbd1 at 08:21 AM on October 22, 2003

Dammit, I should really stop missing these drafts.

posted by corpse at 08:27 AM on October 22, 2003

Argh, that is the worst auto-draft I've ever had.

posted by corpse at 08:29 AM on October 22, 2003

mbd1: my hunch is that it will take a while for LeBron to learn how to score in the league, but that his primary skill -- passing -- should come quite quickly, esp. if they use him at PG a lot. My gut says that Ricky's numbers might stay up there.

We had a draft?

posted by wfrazerjr at 09:22 AM on October 22, 2003

I, uhhh ... other than Nowitski, I have no idea who any of these guys are. This should be interesting. Let's see: Shaq, C-Webb, Vince Carter, Nick Van Exel, Stackhouse, plus Darius Miles, Lamar Odom and others... yeah, I'm happy. And autodraft or not, how the hell does one person end up with all those guys?!?

posted by wfrazerjr at 09:24 AM on October 22, 2003

Nick Van Exel just had some minor surgery and is out for a few weeks too. Not sure why you're excited to have him anyway, seeing as he now plays for the Gunshot Wounds and not Dallas.

posted by billsaysthis at 11:13 AM on October 22, 2003

c-webb's out till Dec., nobody wanted to take an early pick on VC, and Darius, Odom et al. promised dusted free chronic

posted by smithers at 11:14 AM on October 22, 2003

Not sure why you're excited to have him anyway, seeing as he now plays for the Gunshot Wounds and not Dallas. He'll be starting though, which will bring him much better stats. Wins don't matter in fantasy b-ball.

Darius, Odom et al. promised dusted free chronic That sealed the deal.

posted by dusted at 11:44 AM on October 22, 2003

I missed the draft due to traffic (Thanks MTA!) so my team is a motley crew if there ever was one. I like my rebounding potential. Scoring could be tough. Shooting percentages should be okay. I'm the lucky guy with Kobe. Talk about gambles. Gasol is not on the block fellas, sorry.

posted by lilnemo at 11:47 AM on October 22, 2003

someone make me an offer for anyone on my team. i hate them all.

posted by corpse at 12:23 PM on October 22, 2003

Did anyone else think that was an extremely fast draft? I expected the first few rounds to go by quickly, and then slow down - if anything, they got faster. You'd think it would get more difficult to choose once the big names were gone. In the last round or two, I was just looking for vaguely familiar names.

posted by dusted at 01:06 PM on October 22, 2003

corpse you may have the best shooting team in our league! You might consider trading a shooter for a rebounder.

smithers have you looked at corpse's lineup yet?

posted by lilnemo at 02:01 PM on October 22, 2003

I had never done one of these live drafts before, and I was really pleased with how easy the interface was, and how quickly the whole thing went (no need to drag it out)....very enjoyable. The draft was far more intuitive than the rest of the fantasy site.

posted by smithers at 02:13 PM on October 22, 2003

yeah, I just feel that either the guards are too one-dimensional for fantasy games, or are in situations where there's not enough ball to go around......just my opinion though.

posted by smithers at 02:14 PM on October 22, 2003

I don't dispute its a one dimensional line-up, but shooting attributes to 4 out of 10 of the point categories.

posted by lilnemo at 02:17 PM on October 22, 2003

posted by taupe at 11:36 PM on October 22, 2003

You've got to be kidding me, taupe. Baron Davis, Szczerbiak, Chauncey Billups, Turkoglu, Horry, Tyson Chandler, Tim Duncan, Rasho Nesterovic, Anthony Peeler, Voshon Lenard (who?), Austin Croshere and Darko. If that's trash... And autodraft or not, how the hell does one person end up with all those guys?!? Don't worry, wfrazerjr, I'm absolutely positive I'll find a way to screw it up.

posted by dusted at 12:18 AM on October 23, 2003

If you say so. It's just that I've compared the ten listed starters on all fifteen teams based on last year's stats (per-game averages in the ten categories) and done the rotisserie thing on them, and my squad came in second from bottom. I'm in the bottom three in FG% and steals, 11th in rebounding, and no better than fifth in any category. I understand that last year's stats won't be this year's, but my guys have a hell of a lot of catching up to do. Plus, Baron Davis has a groin pull, and Szczerbiak has a bum left foot.

posted by taupe at 01:09 AM on October 23, 2003

taupe, who came in first?

posted by jbou at 10:08 AM on October 23, 2003

taupe, I'd be interested in seeing the entire list. We'd have our own preseason power rankings.

posted by dusted at 10:40 AM on October 23, 2003

That would be very cool. Especially if my team was in the top three. Doubt it, but you never know.

Granted, the above was from manual calculations on ten-player squads as seen yesterday, and is prone to all sorts of error. (When I looked at the squads, dusted's PF slot was yet to be filled; I filled in Chris Webber.) Smooth Sam Perkins didn't top any categories and came in last in assists, but consistently ranked high otherwise (2nd in FG% and total rebounds, and top four in half the categories). corpse (OREB, REB, BLK) and lilnemo (FT%, PTS) trailed the most categories.

posted by taupe at 01:45 PM on October 23, 2003

Score! Third from last! Hopefully Bonzi and Stephen Jackson will have improved seasons.

posted by Ufez Jones at 01:55 PM on October 23, 2003

That would be consistent with all my other finishes in fantasy leagues this year. suckfest.

posted by corpse at 02:05 PM on October 23, 2003

Mid-pack is a good place to start, and VC, Tayshaun Prince and Van Exel will hopefully improve their stats this season. Yeah, I'm currently without a power forward. Until Webber comes back, I'm hoping Yahoo will update the player positions for Odom. He's going to play PF in Miami. Or I could make a deal - anyone got a wealth of PFs?

posted by dusted at 02:13 PM on October 23, 2003

how do I vote on a trade? I don't see that option anywhere (and yes, I'm logged in).

posted by Ufez Jones at 09:00 AM on October 24, 2003

Ufez, I don't think you can really "vote" on it. You can email the commish to protest it. I'm pretty sure catfish is calling for an informal vote via this forum or the message section on the league page. And that trade looks perfectly reasonable to me.

posted by mbd1 at 09:45 AM on October 24, 2003

I have no objection to the trade. How bad was my draft? I've just swapped out three draftees for three non-starters (including frickin' Othella Harrington), and I'm actually relieved how much it improves my team.

posted by taupe at 10:14 AM on October 24, 2003

I don't have a problem with the trade, either. This story would make me a little hesitant about Ray Allen, but who am I to talk - half my team is injured.

posted by smithers at 12:33 PM on October 24, 2003

just and FYI, but the trade was proposed to me, and I had already agreed to it before that Allen story broke. I think it's a good trade though, I wanted some more flash on my team more than anything else. And with walker gone, Pierce should pad some stats (while watching his fg% fall).

Bill, notice taupe's disclaimer: ...compared the ten listed starters on all fifteen teams based on last year's stats...
Alot of my guys came off the bench last year but will start, or get major minutes this year. Read: Mike Dunleavy, Vin Baker, Danny Fortson, etc, etc. I still would have liked to have participated in the live draft though.

posted by lilnemo at 05:40 PM on October 24, 2003

lilnemo: uh, sure.

posted by billsaysthis at 05:53 PM on October 24, 2003

I almost proposed this trade to smithers, but got chicken shit at the last second: Chris Webber and Jerry Stackhouse for Elton Brand. Two injured superstars for one healthy one. What do you guys think of this deal? Would I be giving too much, taking too much, or is it fair to both? Of course I haven't asked smithers yet, so he might just tell me to go to hell...

posted by dusted at 06:33 PM on October 24, 2003

ain't that a bitch. trade for local flavor & now allen is out.

posted by catfish at 01:49 AM on October 25, 2003

I wouldn't despair, catfish. It's amazing how far the 'scope surgeries have come. A player returning in two weeks is not even rare, particularly when the surgery is a "clean up" job.

Ahh, smithers is just delivering the punch line I set up for him. *cymbal crash* I'm not familiar with rotisserie scoring, so I'm not sure how to trade. Is scoring more important at the end of the season (are there playoffs?), or does the scoring count equally all year?
