our sportslinkcentral spammer (discussed here and here) is up to no good again. i received this unsolicited crap in my inbox last night:

Hello,
I recently came across a post on SportsFilter.com that had mentioned my site, Sports Links Central.com (www.sportslinkscentral.com).
  The message read as such:
Check out this great source for sports industry websites Sports Links Central provides ... blah blah blah.
You and several others accused this post of being SPAM and judging by the way it reads, I couldn’t agree with you more.
I own, created, and continue to manage this site and do not advocate SPAMMING in the form of email or message boards.
I just wanted to assure you that this message was not SPAM and hope you can find the format and links of Sports Links Central.com useful in your Web surfing.
Please contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.
Sincerely,
Jim
Jim Daly, Managing Director Sports Links Central.com
this isn't an apology or an explaination, which should have occurred in the above mentioned threads. it is harvesting my email address to further plug the shiite he's selling. anybody else get hit? can we ban this joker?

i understand we are not supposed to discuss etiquette here, but reports of similar emails received by others could not be gathered w/o a locker room thread. and besides, i'm really pissed off. i can't believe they'd have such nerve after being caught red-handed. (though maybe they are unaware of the previous locker room thread and only read the FPP.)

I didn't get any... I don't think...i have a hotmail account that i set up for sites that i sign up for like Sportsfilter, so if i did get one, i'm sure i deleted it without looking.

I got one too. I explained why we we have to police against spam, and wished him luck with his website. I was about to point out that by bringing this up again, we're just giving the guy more publicity, but I really don't think it matters. The website itself isn't nearly as useful as a simple google search. Dano, if you're still pissed, sign his email address up for the Ricky Martin Fan Club newsletter or a beanie baby collector newsletter or something. It's irritating, untraceable, and fun. BTW, your user profile is awesome.

dano: You did the right thing putting this thread up. Unfortunately, people like spamdork are why I keep my profile so vague. And why I never post an email address. btw, ask him if he's related to John Daly. They both seem like such losers. heh. And tell him, since we know who he is, he can stop spamming you or we'll send out the Enforcer. Or the clean-up guy. OK, OK. We'll send StarFucker.

I got this too, although I wouldn't have seen it without this post. StarFucker - hotmail automatically filtered it into the junk mail folder. Spam sucks.

Oh, good point, pfuller. dano, just set your filter to delete anything from "@sportslinkcentral.com" and you'll never have to deal with him again. Don't even bother replying because it'll just prove your email's "live."

really fucking annoying, pardon my language. he doesn't condone spamming, and yet turns around and does it to spofi members. i like samsonov's idea. find a kirk cameron yahoo group and sign this guy up.

Slow down there, jerseygirl. I'm pretty sure what you suggested qualifies as "cruel and unusual punishment". No sense going overboard. Besides, make it a sports-related punishment: sign him up to the Valeri Bure yahoo group (his brother-in-law). I don't know if I've received any emails from this guy as it probably got smacked down by my spam-filter.

I don't use the address listed in my profile. Frankly, I'd be surprised if it is still active. Either way, this pisses me off so I got us rolling on the newsletters. I think we’re off to a good start. Celine Dion has a nice newsletter. What a nice lady. American Idol's mailing has to be fairly irritating. Ever wonder what Carrot Top has to say on a weekly basis? How about the Cincinnati Bengals? I also tried NAMBLA, but got really freaked out. Now it's your turn. Go find more. Meanwhile, I’m off to take a shower… ewww the Cincinnati Bengals.

thanks for the support and suggestions my fellow spofites. we're not seriously signing him up are we? i felt bad enough dragging his ass in here. of course, if i were to make a suggestion ...

I would just like an opportunity to explain myself. I was unaware of the previous locker room thread and I only sent emails to the individuals that had posted on the FPP (I think there were 6 people) Those emails were not SPAM as I singled out the individuals who had said the post was SPAM. The post was an INNOCENT mistake by someone here, and I had just recently became aware of it. Again, I am not trying to shill anything and the email I sent out was an apology and explanation. Neither the post or the emails were intended as SPAM and you don't have to worry about any additional SPAM. Again, I was unaware of the previous Lockerroom discussion and I seriously apologize for any difficulty this may have caused anyone.

If anyone has signed him up for any of these things, you may be exposing all of us and SpoFi to legal action. I counsel you to reconsider any such prank actions. The best action is to ignore the fool. I just want to keep this place fun and light-hearted. Shiny. Happy. People.

Oops, just missed your comment there, dales15. OK. No offense taken. Everyone move along now. Nothing to see here.

wouldnt it be a shame if the law had nothing better to do than open an investigation on people getting subscribed to mailing lists? i presume they'd get to it right after the scandalous "ding dong ditch" and "flaming dog poo in a paper bag" cases. Not to mention the "someone wrote WASH ME! on my dirty car" vandalism investigation.

posted by jerseygirl at 01:02 PM on March 27, 2003

Don't worry, I didn't sign him up for anything. But, the links are all prepared for action, just in case.

Well I guess we were a little harsh, what with the accusations and the name-calling and the threats of Carrot Top and all, but you can bet this won't happen again. Now lets all just shake hands and and forget about it and go get drunk somewhere. Starfucker buys the first round.

*Group hug* And mine's a Kronenburg please, StarFucker.

posted by squealy at 02:28 PM on March 27, 2003

I'm just glad I don't have to go back to the Celine Dion site. And StarFucker, that's awfully generous of you. I like cheap beer, so just about anything'll do.

posted by 86 at 02:33 PM on March 27, 2003

Uh...well, i'll be at Tommy Nevins in Evanston, Illinois tomorrow at about 10PM Central... I'll buy the first 2 rounds for anyone that comes...

welcome dales. sorry about the misunderstanding. i look forward "un-self" links in the future.

err, umm, "your" un-...

Wait a minute... After all the talk, we aren't actually going to do anything to this guy? Damn. *puts away torch and pitchfork*

squealy: I appreciate your warmth and generosity. But please stop hugging me. Just stop it. grum: Put down the flamethrower and the brass knuckles, too. And the pipe. And, the nun-chuks, too. And, yes, the stick with the nails in it has to go also. Yes. Deep breaths. Good.

and I wasted my time inventing this really cool--oh crap the cops are busting down the door, catch you freaks later!!!

posted by billsaysthis at 11:08 AM on March 28, 2003

whatever you were inventing, bill, sent it my way. I'm gonna go visit the Bengals and Celine.

posted by wfrazerjr at 05:48 PM on March 30, 2003

You know, if Celine played for the bengals, you'd kill two fish with one bullet there. And it's not as far fetched as it might seem...I mean, they are the Bengals after all.
