CFL stunned by death of a giant : Ackles's death brought the Lions' complex and the CFL to a standstill Sunday as mourners dealt with shock. Though he stood barely 5 1/2 feet tall and never played professionally, Ackles was a giant of the game. He authored a storybook career with his hometown team and walked with U.S. football royalty during a sojourn to the NFL before returning to Vancouver and reviving a dormant Lions franchise earlier this decade.

I guess I'm gonna have to get Waterboy off of the "to read" list and crack the spine asap (I've had it on the shelf for a while already). As huge a fan as I am of the CFL, the depth of my appreciation for Bobby Ackles is limited ... I hate that I wait 'til a man's passing before being prompted to learn more. Frankly though, anyone who has put as much heart and effort into this league deserves all the praise comin' to him ... and it did come before he left us too. Thanks, Bob ... from CFL fans everwhere. .
