Keep Winning, England -- Your Fans Can't Cry in Their Beer: Is there a worse time than the World Cup for a beer shortage to hit the U.K.? The lack of enough food grade CO2 has required beer to be rationed. One wholesaler is limiting pubs and restaurants to 10 cases of beer. The trade journal Gas World calls it the "worst supply situation to hit the European carbon dioxide (CO2) business in decades." Cider and soft drinks are also affected.

In its typical invocation, chemistry is a cop-out: an after-the-fact explanation of why a team won, especially against the odds. It lets us avoid uncomfortable truths: that baseball, like the workforce, is not always a meritocracy; that mediocre teams can capitalize on luck to beat very good ones; that the sport can be cosmically unjust. In the postgame twilight, chemistry coalesces as a narrative—the “It’s not you, it’s me” of baseball heartbreak. It rings hollow, but is not provably false.

Barry Trotz just Zidane'd the Washington Capitals.:
Barry Trotz informed the organization today of his decision to resign as head coach of the Washington Capitals. We are obviously disappointed by Barry's decision, but would like to thank Barry for all his efforts the past four years and for helping bring the Stanley Cup to Washington. Barry is a man of high character and integrity and we are grateful for his leadership and for all that he has done for our franchise

Phil Mickelson Finds New Way to Keep Putt on the Green: Phil Mickelson intentionally hit a moving ball while putting at the U.S. Open Saturday, a move that should have resulted in his disqualification but didn't. He said on the broadcast he did it to stop the ball from rolling off the green. "I would gladly take the two shots over continuing that display," he said.
