Belgian cyclist dies in Giro D'Italia crash

Watching stage 4 yesterday, with the cyclists all riding in tribute and not racing, and Wouter's Leopard-Trek team crossing the line side-by-side was incredibly moving. It is interesting that cycling has these sorts of traditions/tributes within the scope of the competition. RIP Wouter.

Belgian cyclist dies in Giro D'Italia crash

Watching the descents always terrifies me. Now I have to decide if I even want to watch today's stage on my DVR when I get home tonight. Probably not.

Cyclist Accused of Using Motorized Bike

It looks to me like the video of his breakaways, at least in the long straightaways, is sped up to make his quick acceleration look faster than it was. Those camera motorbikes don't go that fast, the flags flapping in the wind and crowd look strange too. Also, pro cyclists accelerate up hills without getting out of their saddles all the time. If only it were as easy as they make it look!

Lay-woman here, who watches a lot of professional cycling (and probably saw the Flanders and Paris-Roubaix stages in question this year, although I can't swear I saw those exact moments) and rides ~100-150 miles/week.

SportsFilter: The Tuesday Huddle

As a Bills fan, I can tell you it had less to do with Bellicheck mind control and more to do with the Bills always finding a way to lose. To quote a friend in my Facebook feed, "It's what we do."

Weird Times in Shaq Land

I have to admit, I follow Shaq on twitter, and he's probably my favorite twitter-er. (Not that I follow any other celebrities.) It's clear that he's genuinely enthusiastic about the service, plus he cracks me up just about daily. The writing is atrocious but it's a pretty intimate glimpse into his life at times. Other times I can't even decipher what he's saying.

Mostly I just like it when he makes up works like "tweeple" and "shaqsomnia".

You can take the dog out of the track

As an owner of a retired racer, I love this story!! My dog once did something similar at a large suburban dog park. She started running along the fence line and it triggered something and the next thing I knew, she had taken off and was out of sight. The funny part was that the fence curved into a small pond. I didn't see her but I do know she came trotting back to me, soaking wet. To this day I think she followed the fence right into that pond.

Nick of Time: Folk's 53-Yard Field Goal Caps Dramatic Comeback

As a born-and-raised Buffalonian, all I can do is cry. I guess I'm glad I had a super early morning flight on Tuesday and went to bed at the end of the 1st quarter. My heart could not have taken watching that live. Anyone still rooting for Dallas by the end of that game (excepting REAL Dallas fans - not bandwagon-jumpers) has a chunk of cold, black coal for a heart.

"Do you think clubs need to do more in terms of building a more diverse management mix, in terms of race and gender?"

Minorities may have little interest in certain sports because they don't see people like them playing those sports. It's human nature to seek out people like you... so if you're a kid interested in sports, you're likely to choose a sport that has more people like you to play with and look up to. I know that diversity is a difficult topic to discuss - I'm on my company's diversity task force. Diversity doesn't just happen. If you don't make a concerted effort to make diversity a priority in your organization, any organization, it will slowly but surely become homogeneous. It's not necessarily that people are racist or that baseball intended to be a white sport - it's just human nature to want to work with and associate with and be around people like you. The company I work for (a trade association) has seen a significant decline in the diversity of our membership, and the more minorities that leave, the harder it is to bring minorities in. Again, it's not intentional, but it does take intentional effort to counteract. There are lots of reasons diversity is a good thing - not just for the sake of political correctness.
