Adrian McPherson: The Next Rothelisberger?

Happened to see this link through Bravenet, and I'll make two points in response to rcade. First, I am not newage38 and never have been. Second, I have posted content on my blog almost every day since the blog's inception in May of 2004.

Former Linebacker Obsessed with Defense

$120 billion. I'm sure someone is singing "Rikki don't lose that number." What's next -- former teammate Bubba Paris is going to go up in the Space Shuttle?

The Derek Jeter Center

Here's another one for you. Initially, the "new" arena in Philadelphia year ago was the CoreStates Center, named after a big bank in the region. Well, CoreStates was up for grabs, and its suitors including Bank of Boston. Imagine what Philadelphians would have thought if their home teams were playing in the Bank of Boston Center -- in Philadelphia! As it turned out, First Union took over CoreStates, and the arena (for a while) became known as the First Union Center. Which, according to some Philadelphians' way of thinking, was very amusing, as the Flyers and Sixers were playing in the F.U. Center. Now, of course, it's the Wachovia Center, but the choices here -- both real and imagined -- were the source of great amusement and (with respect to Bank of Boston) some fear.

Steroid Club for Men

I have posted about half a dozen posts on this in the past several weeks. The whole situation is perplexing. Baseball comes up with a policy, a renegade names names, and then the baseball establishment denies that anyone was using the stuff. Based upon these developments, I wrote a poem to commemorate the situation. Go to www.sportsprof.blogspot.com to check it out.

It's MY ball, dammit!

Here's my solution. The whole thing is rather silly in the scheme of things. Then again, the world of professional sports has given us a lot of silly stuff to post about.

Business Week Votes Bettman among the worst managers of 2004

Bettman is either a genius with whom hockey fans have to be patient or a total disaster, and only time will tell. I'm not an expert on this, but it seems that if he plays his cards in a way where he can declare an impasse and impose his labor terms on the hockey players (who really have nowhere to go, as evidenced by the ESPN the Magazine article on the 2 Tampa Bay Lightning players who played for a time near what had to be some former gulag in Russia) and get a salary cap, then he might well have saved hockey. But, if as Wayne Gretzky fears, hockey will be down for two years, then pro hockey as we know it could be over.

Arthur Agee's father killed.

It is a sad story. Bo Agee seemed like a likable man, and the family deserves a lot of credit for sharing its life with the rest of the country. We are wealthier for the experience of their openness, as painful as it must have been at times.

Pedro looks headed to the Mets.

As for the Mets, it's the old saying about fools and their money or buyer beware. Pedro needs 5 days rest, and he could be the biggest bust in Queens since Mo Vaughn. Without a bullpen, both Pedro and Tommy Glavine will have a hard time getting wins. As for the BoSox, they now have a big void to fill. Their top 3 starters average about 40 years of age, and Arroyo won't scare anyone. Henry, Lucchino and Epstein are very aggressive, and I would guess they'll land Tim Hudson from Oakland before the season starts. To do so they'll have to give up a lot, including the MoneyBall "Greek God of Walks", Kevin Youkilis. Seriously, expect them to firm up their starting pitching staff in a serious way.

"Everybody would get a turn."

It's a more fun story to blog about than steroids. You don't see any righteous indignation on this board about Anna Benson the way you would about Barry Bonds, the clear and the cream. Just goes to show you that truth is stranger than fiction. I mean, even the supermarket tabloids couldn't make this one up.

"I think we've left the game in a better place."

I posted on this today, so check out my blog for what I had to say on this in detail. In a nutshell, these women had a tremendous influence on the world of sport and on young girls' self-esteem, and they should be thanked very much for that.
