The Islanders have officially gone batshit.

15-year deal for DiPietro, $67.5 million. Second in length only to teammate Yashin, who's is a 10-year deal. And by batshit I mean yes, he's a good goalie, but 15 years is a loooong time in the crease (or to expect that kind of consistency).

The money comes pouring,

but can Holik make good on $45 million over five years and bring the Rangers to the playoffs (even if Bure and Lindros couldn't?) Is Detroit getting another premier goaltender? And, with salaries getting downright silly, will the summer of 2004 (the end of the current collective bargaining agreement) forebode a lockout season?

Straight to DVD for a reason

It's not in the same rink as "Slap Shot," but "Slap Shot 2" doesn't stink as bad as the 2001-02 Florida Panthers. There are two Bobby Orr punchlines, the Hanson Brothers, and an adequate cast of characters. This wasn't even to close to watching "Mad Love." You won't light yourself on fire and run around the neighborhood to alert friends NOT to rent the DVD. I, for one, will rent this movie, since I have seen the first more times than I have had a hot meal. My favorite sports commentator takes a look at the sequel.

The Biggest Sports Event of the Weekend.

Psyche! The NHL All Star Game is this Saturday (Young Stars game, Skills Competition as well), in the middle of a grueling 82 game season with the Olympics a few weeks later. Does anyone in the world but myself care? Hockey is a great sport, and though common perceptions linger, it is not a bunch of lugheads fighting every night (ok, some nights...) Why does no one, relatively speaking, watch the Coolest Game on Ice?
