Yours for only $1 billion dollars!!: The Yankees can be yours for only $1 billion dollars (of course the price could jump to $4.5 if you throw in the optional but lucrative YES network).

I always love a good article about the business of sports (even about the evil empire).

Of course, the article says that the team is NOT up for sale, rather the YES network is what is on the table. At least that's what I got from it. I'm probably wrong, but isn't the monies generated by the TV rights the main force that drives the Yankees financially? Without that, doesn't that limit what the team can spend on free agents, draft choices, A-Rods handlers etc.?

I believe you have it right, THX. The same can be said, on a slightly smaller scale, for the Boston Red Sox and their 80% ownership of NESN. Of course, having someone like John Henry for an owner doesn't hurt either. I think this guy must have the currency printing presses in his basement.

My take on the article was that Yankee brass are denying the story but at least one boardmember from Goldman Sachs (part owners) said that they are actively shopping the team.

Goldman Sachs are part owners of the network, not the team.
