I'm not really surprised. The word seemed to be that he's 73 and was there temporarily.

This was more about keeping Murray in the organization than it was about kicking Muckler out.

Muckler is old, and more importantly, old school. He had several years to try to make them win. If they didn't do this, he stays and Murray goes, and in the opinion of almost everyone, Murray is better. Besides, look what Muckler did. Lalime? Gerber? Hasek? (OK, it wasn't his fault the Swiss killed Hasek's hip.) He let Havlat and Chara go. He kept Redden over Chara. That looked like a collosally bad move these playoffs. He swapped Heatley for Hossa - that's arguably a wash. Heatley's probably better, but put Hossa on a line with Spezzzza and Alfredssssson and maybe not... I can see why Billionaire Owner wanted a change.
