Hundreds to compete for Rock, Paper, Scissors Title.: It's that time of year again for the 4th annual championships. With more then $8000.00 on the line it's time to warm up your fists and strategy.

Good ol' rock, nothing beats rock.

I got this strategy I use. When my opponent lays down rock, I throw down some paper. BOOYAA! What up now? You want some of that? HUH? Yeah, I know. That's some brilliant shit right there.

In the best of three you gotta go Rock, Scissors, Rock.

posted by seansterps at 03:10 PM on November 11, 2006

I usually go for rock on my first throw and win more often then not. I also agree with the rock, sicssors, rock combination for a three.

Good ol' rock, nothing beats rock. ...... Poor Bart.

So if I know you're going rock, scissors, rock do I now go paper, rock, paper or knowing that you know I that, do I continue with rock, scissors, rock?

And that's when it gets interesting. Is this thing televised?

What happens if it's a tie after the regulation period?

I'd watch this. Is this televised?

I went to their website, but it says it's down for now. Sounds like the kind of thing they used to cover on ESPN2 back when they first started out. I remember when they used to cover putt-putt golf too. I miss it.

It's been covered for a lot of channels and so on. No live coverage, but you might see some highlights on the morning shows or see some writeups in various Magazines and so forth. FSN was there last year and I guess their guy liked the event enough to rip it off and host his own NON-SANCTIONED championship (everyone knows that this is the TRUE championship) which, I believe, was shown on A&E or something. They're also filming a RPS documentary right now. Last year's champion went around to appear on multiple shows and was on a late night talk show or two, I think. Here are some of my photos from this year's event and past years. Note: I was an official championship referee in 2003, but since have been a competitor. Not a very good one, unfortunately. I lost in the first round yesterday :(

I play it all the time, Too bad I loose to my 11 year old sister. Embarrasing!

I noticed that there seems to be beer not only on the tables, but in the free hand of some of the athletes while they were competing. Gotta love that kind of sport! Even bowlers and dart players usually set the beer down. BTW, I always lead with paper.

I wonder if they study tape of their opponents. I bet you could kick some serious ass if you study tape of your opponents. The Paper Scissors Stone Club was founded in England in 1842 and provided an environment free from the long arm of the law... I didn't realize RPSers were so persecuted.

Someone settle an argument; is it a rock or a stone? My friend says rock, I say stone. If only there was an easy way to settle this debate once and for all...

You can play this game on gamecolony.com for money...serious!

mkn: I might be the bald guy in the back left of this photo. I finished 9th that year (well, I lost in the round of 16 anyways)......whooo, 9th in the world, baby!

A Brit won the tourney, ending the Canadian domination over the last few years. It's a sign that the sport is really gaining an international following.

This is silly enough to be fun. However it shows that it is a slow time of the year in sports.

posted by sickleguy at 01:31 PM on November 12, 2006

Slow time? NHL hitting its stride. Grey Cup. NBA getting going. NFL mid-season. The RPS Championships are merely the icing on the sports cake.

took iceboxraider's suggestion and checked out gamecolony. too funny. Hope they don't over commercialize the sport.

I must be living in a closet or something, but I really hadn't heard too much about RPS. Never even played before, therefore I don't know anything about it. But from what I understand is it sounds like Rock beats everything. Hell ,I never knew they had actual competitions on this thing. Looks and sounds like a pretty cool game. Just one question, How can paper ever come out on top?

posted by Ghastly1 at 12:24 PM on November 13, 2006

Paper beats rock. (I guess it wraps itself around the rock, figuratively.)

posted by hawkguy at 01:06 PM on November 13, 2006

Nope Ghastly Paper covers Rock Rock break scissors Sissors cut paper God I haven't played that since i was a kid....a long long time ago and I still remember it. BTW someone asked about stone. From the report I saw on television it started as the Stone Paper Scissors club and later was changed to Rock Paper Scissors.

Besides fighting to the death, rock paper scissors is the best way of settling disputes.

Greg Maddux plays Rock Paper Scissors...with the severed hands of butchered prostitutes. That he actually used a rock, paper and scissors to kill.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 04:25 PM on November 13, 2006

That he actually used a rock, paper and scissors to kill. You have to be really badass to be able to kill somebody with paper.

Death by a thousand paper cuts... ouch.
