So much for celebrations, Sir Alex.: Premiership leaders Manchester United were dumped out of the Carling Cup today by Championship bottom team Southend. The 1-0 defeat brought an abrupt end to this weekend's celebrations of Man U manager Alex Ferguson's 20 years in charge. Somebody needs to link to a video of the goal. And somebody needs to buy Southend's striker.

While I appreciate what Fergie has accomplished as a manger (as an Arsenal fan I might add), I still enjoy this result. Of course, this is one less competition they have to worry about, which allows them to focus on the others--watch out chelski (and doh arsenal).

Here's the link to the Freddy Eastwood goal.

I hope no one buys Eastwood - he's the only chance we've got of staying up this season. The man is phenomenal, though. Southend bought him two years ago from a non-league side, when we were in Divsion 2. Since then we've won promotion two seasons running, and he's scored 60 goals for us now in about 100 games. So in two years he's gone up five leagues or so, from amateur football to the championship, and then scoring against Manchester United. Its a pretty remarkable rise. Also, as a Southend fan this is an even huger shock than anything else I have ever seen. Before this season Southend had lost in the first round of the league cup for 8 straight seasons, and this is only the seond time we've ever knocked out a top flight team in either cup, in 100 years. Hopefully we can get Chelsea or Liverpool in the next round - but we'll probably ending up losing to Wycombe instead

Awesome. What a goal to lose too as well. Very much like a Beckham goal:) Man Utd are to football what Ferrari is to Formula One. Only Man Utd don't cheat.

And spun off of that goal link - something I hadn't seen before - the Southend crossbar challenge, (and others).

Even though they seem to be shooting from further back, Scotland are awful at that. Apart from Ally McCoist, who gave up playing sometime in the 1950s.

Only Man Utd don't cheat Players crowding around and intimidating the ref, suspicious 'extra' minutes of added time at Old Trafford, Roy Keane trying to break someone's leg? (stirs pot)

Indeed, XNEIZER, you might have enhanced your enthusiastic (and poetic) response with some well-crafted writing (and rhyming). To wit... Yes!!!* Man U is screwed Southend is quite good Especially Eastwood I'd call him God, I would * [three !'s are a sufficient hyperbolic application of punctuation in this arena]

I was quite pleased to see Manchester United lose! I'd say that Southend may have been overlooked by Man U, as they're a pretty good team, especially Eastwood, who's a prodigious talent.
