Recruit: A&M Gives You 'Plenty of Money': "They take care of you down there. I know from my brother they keep your pockets full, give you plenty of money, keep feeding you meals." -- newly signed Texas A&M recruit Terrence McCoy, younger brother of A&M freshman quarterback Jamie McCoy

...and the NCAA gets excited about ethnic mascot names. I guess the question is why should college athletic recuiting in Texas be any different than Texas politics???

I don't know from experience, but about a year ago I spoke to a former guard at Oklahoma State, and he told me that the recruiting process is like the movie He Got Game.

Why does eveybody have to mess everything up.. shut your mouth, let the guy enjoy himself in college.........jealous

we know this happens, but yet we do nothing. these guys are makeing a ton of money for their university. why not do away with athletic scholarships and allow these guys to collect money based on performance. then charge the athlete tuition money based on his performance.

Man whos kidding who with the big money in college football and the big money at college allumni groups we would be stupid to think this doesnt go on. this kid who is talking just wants people to think that he and his brother are it. i bet people will be looking to punish him on the field. sounds like another vick to me.

C'mon Ags, let's bring back Jackie Sherrell and his reputed bag man RC to clean up a program obviously gone awry!

If that's the case why didn't Billy Gillespie win today against UT?

The kid from A&M should keep his mouth shut, he's gonna ruin it for everyone when NCAA investigates. They are already making them attend class now.

The whole process needs to be cleaned up. We have to remember football is a game. These are STUDENT athletes. I know that this may seem naive, but we need to get back to basics and these guys need to leave school with something more than a nagging injury and empty pockets, which is where the majority of them end up.

I wish this were true thmsry, but after having a conversation with a friend of mine on the UH Cross Country team, I learned that these athletic departments don't give a rats ass if you get an education. Its a darn shame too, because this girl is an honors student (with A's in her honors classes) and when she complains that she needs to study, her coach gets on her about "not earning her scholarship." I agree though...more should be done to help these athletes get through their classes. Give them the chance to get an education and you'll give them a skill beneficial for life!

This happens everywhere, not just at Texas A&M. The only difference here is one of the recipients was dumb enough not to keep his mouth shut.

My hunch is that all the recruit meant by the remark was that he's excited about the meal money. Which would be funny and a little sad. College football's a big business in the BCS conferences, but the "amateur" athletes enjoy so little of the financial reward that the prospect of a $30 meal per diem makes some of them giddy.

YING YANG MAFIA HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD! Is this story a shock to anyone? If anyone even has the slightest notion that this doesnt go on, they must live in a cave!

The whole problem stems from the fact, yes, the FACT, that many, if not ALL, schools with any integrity, give out scholarships, and DO pay money, but then require the athletes to be students FIRST and athletes next. Classic example: University of Wisconsin hockey team. Every athlete on it is required to maintain a minimum of a 'C' GPA, and they are nearly all on the honor roll, and they are not taking basket weaving 201 or quilting 109, but engineering, business, and education majors, and still attaining honor roll status. Actually going to classes means crap if you don't even know what the subject is or what the words mean. The fact is, a great majority of these 'students' can't even give a post-game interview to a TV sportscast because they are so poorly schooled in english that their sentences all begin with 'You know what I'm sayin' or 'Know what up' or some other bullshit. If a 'student' actually studies, they actually get what the school offers. An education.

I agree Mrhockey, but I think this happens much more in what can be called the "big" sports (basketball and football). I think the main reason for this is because of the national spotlight and revanue. If a college gets the next Adrian Peterson or Reggie Bush they have the potential to make a ton of money through TV deals and winning games. The problem is, you "don't have anything to offer to the player" besides things like playing time, ect. things other schools can offer too. That is when the money and the sex comes into play.

posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 01:17 PM on February 05, 2006

Ying Yang Mafia is right on. This is a "big sport" issue. When I competed in college I won 3 NCAA team championships and all I got was my tuition and a sweat shirt for a team uniform. I had to pay for everything else. I took a class with one of the B-Ball players and was in class every day. I saw him twice. The first day of class and the Final exam day. He did better in the class than I did, but then again he never won a championship, NCAA, conference or otherwise.

I'm with rcade on this one. Everything sounds like a lot of money when you are a kid. I thought I was rich my first month every semester just getting my left over financial aid back. It need not be something sinister.
