"Are you guys ready for the Williams sisters?" : Serena and Venus Williams both advanced out of the third round of the US Open today and into a round of sixteen Sister Slam matchup, the earliest the two have met in a tournament since the 1998 Australian Open. Serena made it to the next round by dishing some payback to Francesca Sciavone in the afternoon, 6-3, 6-4, while Venus dropped Daniela Hantuchova in the evening match, 6-3, 6-3.

serena i am sorry to say this is a little overweight...maybe we should get her on Celebrity Fit Club....i believe that venus will put serena away in two sets 7-6, 6-3. Venus has been striking the ball too well, and most importantly is actually fit, serena should rest and think about whether she wants to play tennis or not. she says that she is dedicated but yet she still hasn't slimmed down back into playing weight.

serena i am sorry to say this is a little overweight What have you been smoking? I agree that Serena isn't in great shape, but it ain't an overweight thing; it seems to me more like she just hasn't been able to play and train as hard. You can't get/stay strong if you can't stress your body. Venus is just ahead of her on the recovery curve. And I think Venus did change one thing in her game (that I noticed, anyway); it's a small thing, arguably so basic it's not worth mentioning, but I think it's making the difference for her. I'm starting to think that the whole "Serena needs to think about whether she wants to play tennis" thing has about been done to death. I mean, for heaven's sake, where was Lindsay Davenport during the US Open Series? Laying back in the weeds, healing up and saving herself for the big one, that's where. That's what everyone with any sense did, so why should Serena have handled her summer any differently? (with that said, I'll agree, Venus in two sets)

Venus over Serena by 14 karat pounds. Tell Serena to look in a mirror and check her arriere before donning her mini tennis skirts. The Jets are still looking for a linebacker.

Are you guys serious? "Serena will lose because her ass is too big?" You haven't watched a tennis match from beginning to end in your lives, have you? Seriously. It's going to be a hell of a match. Venus is on a bit of a roll, and it'll be a good test of Serena's focus on the court, but if Serena gets her head into the game, it could be the closest match between them in years, the fact that it's in the Round of 16 be damned.

Are you guys serious? "Serena will lose because her ass is too big?" You haven't watched a tennis match from beginning to end in your lives, have you? Seriously. They may have watched some tennis match, somewhere, but they haven't watched Serena Williams if they say she's fat. Maybe they just think that every female tennis player is supposed to look like Maria Sharapova? It's going to be a hell of a match. Venus is on a bit of a roll, and it'll be a good test of Serena's focus on the court, but if Serena gets her head into the game, it could be the closest match between them in years, the fact that it's in the Round of 16 be damned. They're both gonna bring it in a big way. So what's your prediction, chico?

Oh, I like Venus too, just becuase of the roll she's on and the fact that Serena seems a little distracted this week, but I wouldn't put my last dollar on it or anything.

hey, i am not in tennis, so do I also have to pretend that these two girls a beautiful? You don't have to pretend that they're beautiful (at least, according to your Cosmo/SI-swimsuit-issue-informed standard of beauty), but if you're "not in tennis", you really ought to stay the hell out of a tennis thread -- and if your only possible contribution to a thread involving female athletes is a comment on their attractiveness, you really ought to either stay out of any such threads or stay off SpoFi altogether. droolingknuckledraggingwankers.com is down the hall and to the left.

Cosmo/SI fans also appreciate excellent tennis. Know what I mean. Love watching all those hads go left-right, left-right, left-right. Where did all those tall, beautiful, blond Russian gals come from? I have also become a fan of beach volleyball. Especially the female version.

You people are morons. Serena's overwieght and not good looking - gimme a fucking break. I don't care if you find her good looking or not, but calling her out of shape is ridiculous. World class athletes don't just grow on trees.

For someone who was out of shape, she played a helluva match today. My thoughts: - Venus is in shape by anyone's standards, and moreover has a ton of composure on the court. Whoever she comes up against will have to beat her all the way -- she will do absolutely nothing to beat herself. - Very few long points in this one, but I think (unlike the commentators) that it still made for very good watching. The two players had to take risks, and that makes for fun play. It also makes for a lot of serves shanked into the net or sent just long, but when you know that you're going to get a very strong return, you have to go for a nasty first serve. Speaking of which: - Serena had some jaw-dropping, "take that" returns that were just amazing to watch. She said afterwards that her play was terrible, but I really think it was her best match in a while. - Bet ya a nickel Venus makes hamburger out of Clijsters, ranking or no ranking. So howzabout that James Blake?

I like whichever one screams the loudest.

Jimmy Blake has been touched by God. I've watched his last two matches and his game is at another level - he is as hot as anyone and could take the whole thing. If he can keep it up - he has to keep playing like this for another week.

posted by WeedyMcSmokey at 11:13 PM on September 04, 2005

You'd have to have no heart at all to not be pulling for Blake at this point. Given what he's overcome, how well he's playing, and how much joy he's bringing to every match, it's just a joy watching him get his act back together. And I'd like to say I called the Williams match, but it wasn't that much of a stretch. Serena just didn't have the focus, whether it was her bad leg or the lack of recent matches or whatever. I agree that Venus/Kim Clijsters is going to be a barnburner of a match. I can't wait.
