A few words from a class act: Darren McCarty says his Detroit goodbyes in public through the Free Press after the Red Wings bought out his contract. Too bad everyone can't be this gracious.

It's nice to see a player who's not bitter over being moved out of a team after such a long time with it. It's extremely refreshing.

Will the fans in Detroit cheer for him if he's laying a beating on some rookie tough guy on the Wings roster sometime in December?

McCarty is a class act. Hope whomever he signs with will welcome him with open arms. If he beats the piss out of another Redwing more power to him it will just show Wings Management that they should have kept him around.Good luck in your new adventures Darren.

Will the fans in Detroit cheer for him if he's laying a beating on some rookie tough guy on the Wings roster sometime in December? I'm sure many of them will. The Wings have had some loyal players, notably: Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, hell, McCarty. (they are in the same breath due to tenure not skill) Hockey fans (like myself) are usually loyal to a fault, and we're talking an original 6 city, they have a long institutional memory. If Doug Gilmour had come back to play against Toronto as a Canadien and pounded the snot out of Mats Sundin, would I have been upset? No. Not at all.

Drew Bledsoe did something like this before leaving Boston. Bledsoe took out a page in the Boston Globe (I think), thanking the fans and the city for the support. It was received well. I've never seen a McCarty interview, and I guess I never will. Starting now, I'm a fan.

Will the fans in Detroit cheer for him if he's laying a beating on some rookie tough guy on the Wings roster sometime in December? I can't speak for my fellow Wings fans, but I will cheer for him. McCarty will always be remembered for getting retribution on Clod Lemeiux for his dirty hit on Kris Draper, as well as his Gretzky-like goal in game 4 of the 97 Finals to clinch the Wings first Cup in 42 years. When I'm on my deathbed, unable to remember my kids' names, I'll still remember those 2 moments. As far as I'm concerned, he'll be a Red Wing forever, no matter where he plays. We're gonna miss you Mac...

Nice gesture on McCarty's part, he was a heart and soul guy for years for the Wings. Ah well, despite all the lockout fan fan fallout, this is fixing to be the most exciting and completely unpredictable off season of our llifetimes. Goddamn I am checking updates on free agents, trades and what not on almost an hourly basis. And Doug Glimour couldn't beat up Mats Sundin - ever. There - thread derailed.
