Another vicious attack in a pro hockey game "(t)hat makes the McSorley-Brashear thing look like girl scouts.'': This crap is killing hockey. And killing hockey doesn't need the help right now.

It would be interesting to compare Don Cherry's comments on this incident (if any) with his comments on the McSorley-Brashear ugliness, given the aggressor here is Eastern European. I completely agree about these incidents hurting hockey and killing it's chances for increased popularity. Of course, I also hate the third-man in rule, so I may not be much help.

The victim, Garrett Stafford, swung his stick at Alexander Perezhogin's head only seconds before (striking a glancing blow off Perezhogin's helmet). If Stafford was a couple of inches lower, we'd be talking about how HE is the worst person since Charles Manson. Instead, Perezhogin retaliates (and does a better job of it) and Stafford is injured. I'm sorry he's hurt, but he's the one that initiated the stick-to-the-head incident so I can't build up TOO big a sympathetic feeling for him. That said, throw the book at Perezhogin anyway. Just don't waste too much pity on Stafford.

Yeah, I agree with grum. While Perzhogin does need to have the book thrown at him, the difference is that this wasn't a predatory attack in which he hunted the other guy down the ice... LIKE McSorley/Bertuzzi. It was a retaliatory in-the-thick-of-it strike. Does that make the result any less vicious? No. But the intent is different and it doesn't warrant comparison to the other two incidents.
